Colin is not a birthday cake

Tomorrow our younger daughter is 24. I would love to have the energy to make her a cake but I’m running on fumes and have been for months.

I gave my husband one job. Go buy her a birthday cake. He sent me a photograph Colin. I said no, there is only one time a year she can have a cake with happy birthday written on it. Would you believe such a thing does not exist at our nearest M&S!

Her older sister has come to the rescue, she’s gone to Sainsbury’s.

YABU Colin is the gold standard shop bought cake

YANBU Colin is an any time of year cake

If I ever worry I’m not amongst my people on this site, I’ll come back to this thread.

This year (after a number of chocolate cakes, Colins, gateaux in variety etc) I made it absolutely crystal clear to adult DD and to DH that on my birthday, I wanted an actual birthday cake. An proper traditional sponge cake with white icing, ideally with Happy Birthday written on it, or decorated in some other way, but any kind of birthday cake, I didn't mind how it was decorated as long as it was an iced sponge cake. Literally the ONLY thing I wanted on my birthday was a proper birthday cake. Great, they both said - will do.

DD arranged with DH that he would go and get it. Bloody coffee and walnut cake, he got ffs. He absolutely could not understand why I was so disappointed, and he genuinely didn't seem to comprehend what a birthday cake was.

You make no sense.

You said you wanted "any kind of birthday cake."

You got a coffee and walnut kind of birthday cake.

It's you who doesn't understand what a birthday cake is.

(It's a cake you have on your birthday.)

I think it’s a bit of a shit birthday cake.

i personally don’t like him. He’s a Swiss roll to have any time of year.

they do a massive version of him online, I would say the one online is a birthday cake at a push.

we prefer carrot cake in our house, I buy a large one online from M&S when it’s someone’s birthday

Zanatdy · Yesterday 20:12

I’d be disappointed as choc cake my least favourite but pretty standard as a bday cake

I took "any kind" here to mean any kind of decoration. It sounds like the poster was clear about wanting a standard sponge cake with jam and buttercream and fondant icing.

I attended a wedding that had Colin cakes as their wedding cake 😃

Surely the words than mean "any kind of decoration" are "any kind of decoration", and the words "any kind of birthday cake" mean "any kind of birthday cake."

Sorry I voted in the wrong category. Colin is absolutely a very fine cake!

I would love that rather than boring fruit cake. Bet the guests were chuffed

dancinginthekitchen · Yesterday 20:36

I just had a Colin for my birthday (I’m 68!) 😀

ErrolTheDragon · Yesterday 20:41

Colin is an any time of year cake but obviously that includes birthdays so YABU.

Colin is birthday cake, Easter cake, Christmas cake, it’s-Tuesday-but-I’ve-had-a-bad-day-at-work cake…

It's how I interpreted this individuals post, as I said. Why are you so aggressive?

TheBlueKoala · Yesterday 20:42

@BeMintFatball Yanbu. For a 4 year old a Colin cake would be fine but not for a 24 year old.

Colin is special for ALL occasions! My very wealthy friends had their wedding at a beautiful vin yard… all very very naaaice… the wedding cake(s) were Colin and Connie 😆

Yes my cousin had a lovely wedding and they did have a proper wedding cake for the guests, but, as she had always loved Colin, we brought one in just for her with a veil stuck just behind his face. It actually looked quite good!

I really REALLY don't like writing on cakes.

Don't gatekeep Colin.

It can be either but Colin is overrated. Only his face is worth eating.

I agree. My DS (5) recently asked for a Colin birthday cake, so that is what he got... and it was disappointly dry. He loved it, though, thank goodness.

😄 I mean it would be fine for anyone's birthday if that's what they would like but I presume that OP knows her daughter wouldn't have been happy with it.

Why assume the OP knew better than her DH what their daughter would like? I can’t imagine many 24yos being bothered by whether a cake had Happy Birthday on it or not, they knew what day it is!

I said exactly what sort of birthday cake I wanted in my post. A sponge cake with white icing. The sort you have only on birthdays and never at any other time. The coffee and walnut cake was tiny and served 4 small slices, and was the sort you might buy when your maiden aunt is coming round for tea. It was not by any stretch of the imagination a celebration cake.

Talkingfrog · Today 01:07

I don't see why colin can't be a birthday cake.

Shops often have a category for occasion cakes, which to me means any occasion you wish to celebrate.

A cake doesn't need to say happy birthday to be a birthday cake. I am planning on having a Victoria sponge for my birthday - won't have writing. May/may not have candles.

You were contradictory and confusing, and continue to be so.

You said you wanted a specific kind of birthday cake, as described.

And you also said you wanted "any kind of birthday cake."

A sponge cake with white icing is not exclusively a birthday cake. It can be a birthday cake. Or it could be a wedding cake. Or a cake you serve when your maiden aunt is coming for tea.

And a birthday cake can be a small coffee and walnut cake. Or an ice cream cake shaped like a caterpillar. Or a chocolate gateaux. Read the thread. All of these and many more can be birthday cakes.

I think you need to free your mind a little. Here's a wild thought to ponder: you can have a sponge cake with white icing whenever you want.

How would you feel if i got a bog standard swiss roll and put my own buttercream, smarties and choc buttons on it, plus candles etc? That's what i've always done for my youngest (now 11), he always seemed to like it, but i think i'll have to come up with a new trick for his 12th!

M&S do a chocolate and fresh cream Swiss roll cake in the fridge dessert section. It’s elite, dooo it!
