Colin is not a birthday cake

Tomorrow our younger daughter is 24. I would love to have the energy to make her a cake but I’m running on fumes and have been for months.

I gave my husband one job. Go buy her a birthday cake. He sent me a photograph Colin. I said no, there is only one time a year she can have a cake with happy birthday written on it. Would you believe such a thing does not exist at our nearest M&S!

Her older sister has come to the rescue, she’s gone to Sainsbury’s.

OP, your husband sent the suggestion of Colin as he obviously thinks a colin is fine for a birthday. Why do you think you know best? He has to accept he's not worth listening to does he?

His opinion doesn't count? Maybe he should insist that Colin is used and push your Sainsburys cake into second place.
Who made you the final judge of this? Oh yeah, you did.

We’ve had a GF Colin with his non GF girlfriend for one birthday party, they looked cute together (though not touching)

YABU Colin is the ultimate birthday cake. and I am a good baker who will make anyone the home made bday cake of their choice, but when it comes to my birthday the kids know to get me a Colin 🐛

Colin is the ONLY birthday cakes we will have. We were orgasmic when Arctic Colin made an appearance!

wiredandtired · Yesterday 14:52

Nothing wrong with a Colin cake!

TeamGeriatric · Yesterday 14:52

I have always made a cake for the kids, but for my own birthday it's often a Colin cake at my request.

I'm surprised. I was in our m&s yesterday and there was a nice selection of fancy birthday cakes. Colin, while tasty, would be a bit disappointing for a 24 Yr old.

My 24 year old would be disappointed NOT to have a Colin on his Birthday.

It depends what your DD likes OP.

Giant Colin was our wedding cake!

Ds2 always buys me Colin for my birthday! He puts a candle in as well! 😆

Gloriousgardener11 · Yesterday 15:00

Colin is always welcome at this house whatever the celebration!

JayJayj · Yesterday 15:02

I’m torn. Because there is absolutely no way, I would want a Colin birthday cake, unless it was like a theme. I’d rather have a fancy cake.

But I also think it’s fine that people like them as birthday cakes.

On the bright side, on your husband’s birthday, get him Collin.

Are you more of a Cuthbert household?

GordonRamsey · Yesterday 15:09

Any cake is a Birthday Cake if you stick a candle in it.

In fact a Pork Pie can become a Birthday Cake once a candle has been added.

And, of course, so can a Pot Noodle (although you have to leave the foil on).

Colin is the only birthday cake in our house - unless they run out and we have to make do with Cecil!

AmnesiacDream · Yesterday 15:12

I do tend to think Colin is over rated, but he's completely acceptable as a birthday cake. I've never been keen on cakes with "Happy Birthday!" on them. To me, that's something for a card or a banner. On a cake I would rather the decoration concentrated on looking good than framing script, which is rarely pretty and looks crappy as soon as it's cut. But each to their own.

The question is - does your DD love a cake that actually says "Happy Birthday!"?

YABVVVVVVU Colin the caterpillar is the ultimate birthday cake and you now must wash your mouth out with soap for saying something so offensive 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Littletreefrog · Yesterday 15:18

Any cake is a birthday cake if you have it on your birthday. Also all my family would choose Colin if they had a choice.

Basildon4Eva · Yesterday 15:21

I view Colin as a birthday cake. However, I would be disappointed to receive one as I think he's dry, too sweet and overrated.

So I think neither of you is unreasonable.

This year (after a number of chocolate cakes, Colins, gateaux in variety etc) I made it absolutely crystal clear to adult DD and to DH that on my birthday, I wanted an actual birthday cake. An proper traditional sponge cake with white icing, ideally with Happy Birthday written on it, or decorated in some other way, but any kind of birthday cake, I didn't mind how it was decorated as long as it was an iced sponge cake. Literally the ONLY thing I wanted on my birthday was a proper birthday cake. Great, they both said - will do.

DD arranged with DH that he would go and get it. Bloody coffee and walnut cake, he got ffs. He absolutely could not understand why I was so disappointed, and he genuinely didn't seem to comprehend what a birthday cake was.
