Anyone else would mop, right?

You pour yourself a coffee, and as you turn away from the counter, a tablespoons worth falls to the kitchen tile.

You would mop that up right? Not leave it, or "wipe it up with your sock".
Right?!

Am I being unreasonable to think anyone else who spilt coffee would get out a mop and clean it properly?

I wouldn’t get the mop out - I would use a damp cloth and some product though!

BluntBrickViper · 09/10/2026 17:27

Am I the only one absolutely appalled by the thought of wetting your sock voluntarily?! A wet sock is right up there beside getting a soggy sleeve doing the dishes!

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 09/10/2026 17:29

I wouldn’t mop for a tiny spill.

sock wipe, or kitchen roll or antibacterial wipe…. Or if in a real hurry (dashing into a meeting) I’d leave it until later.

edited to add: I see now that it’s not at home, but in work. In which case yes I’d definitely clean it up though not necessarily a full mop. A wipe with cleaner on that spot.

Kitchen roll and no mopping here too.

"It’s literally no more effort than using a cloth"

It is literally more effort to use a mop than to tear off a piece of kitchen roll, wipe spill and bin. In what world are they of equal effort?!

The mop type in question, which OP has confirmed they used (google flash speed mop - other mops of this nature are also available), is the type in which you grab a wipe and stuff its corners into 4 holes of the rectangle mop head. You then mop away before pulling the wipe off and then disposing of it in the bin.

To me this is the same, or at least very similar, number of steps you describe in your paper towel scenario? Except with this mop you don’t have to bend down to the floor to wipe the spill, therefore it is arguably easier than the paper towel. Especially if you have back issues 😅

In addition, OP has confirmed that the spill in question was of a sticky nature therefore rendering the paper towel ineffective. This would require some kind of moisture and preferably a detergent of some sort, to avoid leaving a sticky residue.

MaddestGranny · 09/10/2026 18:04

Doesn't everybody have a floorcloth under the sink for this sort of thing?

Pedant61 · 09/10/2026 18:08

Who could be arsed to get out a mop? Just wipe it with a bit of kitchen paper (or a sock, if paper unavailable).

ForPlumReader · 09/10/2026 18:08

Wouldn't resort to a mop but equally wouldn't leave it for someone to slip on.

omghereistrouble · 09/10/2026 18:09

at worst my sock at best a wet cleaning wipe

Howmuchisthatparrotinthewindow · 09/10/2026 18:13

A clog? A wooden clog? Sorry, missing the point 😂

Rituelec · 09/10/2026 18:14

Sock

My son knocked over his whole glass of squash at tea time today.

I didn't mop. I used a cloth and kitchen roll!

To be fair a glass of squash would be a towelling dressing gown arm job, a sock wouldn’t touch the sides for that tsunami.

Totaldramallama · 09/10/2026 18:38

No, I'd use a cloth or a kitchen towel. Getting the mop out is an absolute faff that is only worth it for the whole floor

Isittimeformynapyet · 09/10/2026 18:40

Hankunamatata · 08/10/2026 17:46

Er nope
Kitchen and wipe it up (or use dirty laundry lurking on floor gradually for washing machine)

Can things lurk "gradually"?

sueelleker · 09/10/2026 18:54

Paper towel, at least.

HelenHywater · 09/10/2026 18:55

nope. just a cloth, some spray and some hot water for something sticky.

It's pretty unanimous OP!

Gwenhwyfar · 09/10/2026 18:56

keepingitclean · 08/10/2026 17:37

I absolutely would not get a mop out to clean a to tiny bit of coffee. I would use kitchen roll or a cloth.

Me too, but maybe that's what OP means with mop it up. An actual mot would just spread it around.

PurpleLovecats · 08/10/2026 17:37

Nah I’d use the sock method.

Sameee, I thought of my sock before I even read that part 😂

choccytime · 09/10/2026 19:16

Sock every time , mop comes out occasionally

Greenwriter76 · 09/10/2026 19:33

I wouldn’t mop it but I’d never wipe anything up with a sock either. I’d get kitchen roll or a cloth..

YvonnMcgruder · 09/10/2026 19:38

Confused about the sock wipers? So you just walk around with a damp sock for the next few hours?

TheFriendlyPotato · 09/10/2026 19:43

I dont think I'd even consider a sock let alone a mop! But if I did it would probably be the sock I was wearing. Itll dry!

I am not a role model for housework though so thats probably a me thing.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/10/2026 19:49

I’d use one of the sponge cloths that’s always around the sink area.

ByRoseBiscuit · 09/10/2026 19:54

Spray and kitchen roll at best, sock at worst! I wouldn’t be mopping such a small spill

ThatLemonBear · 09/10/2026 19:55

I’d use a bit of kitchen paper
