This is what my 8 year old wrote on her door handle thing, that you can hang over your door.
Following another argument about not being allowed on YouTube, she stormed upstairs, shut the door and put this sign on the handle, she then fell asleep.
We were travelling lots at the weekend and are all lacking sleep. Dh says to just leave it, but I find it upsetting and was shocked she'd written it.
None of us have mentioned it yet.

What would you do?

Dear Shit Kid,
You can find somewhere else to live. You have seven days.
Love Mum

Disclaimer: I don't have any kids, don't worry!

I do and I thought it was a great reply 😉🤣

She's 8, she shouldn't be watching YouTube. You need stricter boundaries re screen time.
Imagine saying that to your mum when you were 8.
It's unimaginable. Teenage years will be hell if you fail her as a parent now..

Thanks all, this was late yesterday afternoon. I left it there and I think she must have forgotten.
Just picked her up from school and I purposely left it out on the dining room table. I was busying about, pretending not to notice and she was scribbling it all out, I then asked her about it, calmly. I said I was very upset reading it and shocked and that she can't say these things, especially to her mum and especially swearing too. (We don't swear at home and it's unlikely to be from Yt at friends houses, I do remember her telling me words people had saod at school in the past)
She immediately exploded, getting upset and shouting and me shouting over her.
Currently sat upstairs trying to calm down, have taken the tv remote away (no access to Yt, just annoyed at her shouting back rudely at me)

Honestly feel like a shit mum and no idea where I've gone wrong, she wasn't like this when younger.

8 is so young. This will get much worse.

Oh she'd get a reaction, and believe me she wouldn't like it.

This level of disrespect is beyond unacceptable. The phrase "tonne of bricks" would be used.

I am shocked, truly, at the amount of parents on here who would let their child display this attitude towards them with no comment, let alone punishment.

Exactly - and we all end up paying the price.

They laugh and think they're cool parents, but it'll bite them.

Flatandhappy · Yesterday 22:25

Not acceptable. So many people on MN complain about how disrespectful their teens are to them, that doesn’t happen overnight. You don’t have to come down like a ton of bricks but she needs to know that calling you a shit mum is not ok now or ever.

Have you ever met an 8 year old 🤔They're capable of stringing a simple sentence together even if they haven't heard that exact sentence before.

What are you saying? I’ve raised two kids who have never sworn or used this language in front of me. Are you saying it’s normal or okay for an 8yo to use this language just because they can string a sentence together? I also don’t think you’ve understood the point I was making. But I can’t be bothered to explain it to you.

I'd remove it and, when they are rested, have a conversation about how it's OK to feel angry, but it's not OK to be disrespectful and it's not OK to use words like that to other people.

I think i would then also state that I assume they had learnt such behaviour on YouTube and it was now going to be blocked indefinitely on the router. If they learned how to express their feelings respectfully then you can revisit that.

Kids never get allowed to let off steam. Personally I wouldn’t punish this, she’s just reacting to strong firm boundaries. Over time she’ll know that crap behaviour doesn’t get her anywhere. Sweat the big things, you want her to be able to confide in you as a teen, not think of you as a dictator that doesn’t even allow her to show strong emotions.

We’ve had a lot of “you’re a terrible mum, you’re awful parents” when refusing to get DD a phone like her peers. I’d rather take the back-chat and keep the firm boundaries. It’s not easy parenting with technology now and it’s not easy being a kid either.

My 6 year old drew a penis on a sheet of paper and wrote the word “dik” on it and pinned it on our family pin board. Kids pick up language from all sorts of places - the fact your kids have never ever sworn in front of you is very surprising. They must be scared of you! Home should be a safe space to let off some steam.

It's not the writing of the sign that made you turn out ok, it was parental and other influence, and boundaries set.

Well, yes, obviously!

Letting off steam is different to creating an offensive notice aimed at your Mum. It's also different to creating that "dik" pick which wasn't aimed at anyone.
It's the disrespect that's the problem.

Kitcatsm · Yesterday 23:04

Kids learn all these words on the playground, it's also hard for them to find out other kids families have different boundaries. We've had similar blow ups with not being allowed to play out on the street (out of sight) like her other classmates can. Just keep the boundary firm & it will settle. Maybe plan to do something nice together to build a bridge.

Another weird post on this thread. Maybe it’s me! Letting off steam ≠ swearing!

No youtube until xmas then ,but you should explain her the use of the word sh*, and specifically when directed to you.

Shatenoeuf · Yesterday 23:32

How does she even know what youtube is?!

Get her off screens.

This sounds sensible. I love blaming you tube! Grin

She needs to be taught appropriate methods of expressing anger.

Don't take it personally, kids haven't developed fully yet. It's your job to help them.

I mean her language is terrible but who hasn’t received an “I hate you” note from a grumpy kid 😆

I haven't
