AIBU: people calling it peri-menopause instead of menopause

ok firstly I know that technically you are in peri-menopause, then the menopause itself is literally the day your period stops altogether- then after that one moment in time you are post-menopausal.

But people always calling it peri-menopause is clearly to indicate that they are actually still really young and nowhere near the menopause itself yet.

I think that’s why it grates on me so much. Because on the one hand they’re championing the issues that affect women etc, but at the same time making it clear that they themselves are actually very young and youthful- yet not afraid to mention these issues.

for what it’s worth I can’t be bothered faux-impressing anyone and I just call it the menopause.

but every single one of my friends calls it peri-menopause or they’re simply’peri’. We’re all mid 40s.

just saw someone on LinkedIn purporting to do a Women’s rights post, someone in her 50s commented about the menopause, and the original poster replied but talked about peri-menopause.

AIBU or a people who call it peri-menopause just a bit vain? 😅

I’m peri-menopausal. If I was vain and wanted people to think I was younger, I wouldn’t talk about peri-menopause at all!
I talk about it because I hope that it will reduce stigma and that other women will get the support they need to not have to put up with all the bullshit symptoms that some of us have to live with. I’d that’s not you, then you’re lucky and I wish you well.

I have had issues but I just call it the menopause to save time 🤷‍♀️

If that's what you choose to call it, that's your prerogative but doesn't make it any more "right" than using the correct terminology. How much time does it actually save to drop "peri"?

I had my last baby at 45.
Everything was in working order.
Had some hot flushes 6 or 7 yrs later. That was it.
I agree with posters who think we shouldn't medicalise everything, it's a normal part of life.

Sorry for picking your comment out but I just don't get how you cant understand that not everyone has the same experience as you

Well indeed. It would be crazy if you kept mentioning it. Perhaps you should from now on? 'Hi I'm Negroany and I'm still menstruating' then do a little twirl.

I do actually have to talk about it at work because I'm in HR and it's all menopause action plans and menopause policies these days. And people bringing grievances because noone takes account of their menopause problems!

Note - noone is expected to do a peri-menopause action plan or policy. Make of that what you will!

What is the action plan like?

This is so funny. If I know you well enough to talk about my periods (or lack, therof) then I would assume you know my age and there’s no point me suggesting otherwise by using the word peri 😂
