AIBU: people calling it peri-menopause instead of menopause

ok firstly I know that technically you are in peri-menopause, then the menopause itself is literally the day your period stops altogether- then after that one moment in time you are post-menopausal.

But people always calling it peri-menopause is clearly to indicate that they are actually still really young and nowhere near the menopause itself yet.

I think that’s why it grates on me so much. Because on the one hand they’re championing the issues that affect women etc, but at the same time making it clear that they themselves are actually very young and youthful- yet not afraid to mention these issues.

for what it’s worth I can’t be bothered faux-impressing anyone and I just call it the menopause.

but every single one of my friends calls it peri-menopause or they’re simply’peri’. We’re all mid 40s.

just saw someone on LinkedIn purporting to do a Women’s rights post, someone in her 50s commented about the menopause, and the original poster replied but talked about peri-menopause.

AIBU or a people who call it peri-menopause just a bit vain? 😅

I completely agree with you @Joyful26 and it proper grates on me too. I can't articulate why.

Yes, exactly my point!! and plenty of us in this thread are saying we think it's a good idea. I cannot imagine getting so angry about a policy that other women have literally stated they found helped them.

If you dont like the policy then dont bloody use it but its beyond selfish and spiteful to suggest the policy shouldnt exist. Good for you that you've been lucky enough to only have a few days of vague "feeling unwell" but you dont represent those of us who have had more serious side effects.

Edited

I’m simply stating my opinion. That doesn’t translate to anger. Are you confusing me with someone else?

@pumpkinpielatte I see you’ve edited your post so that mine no longer appears to be a reply to your actual comment. If anyone else is confused I hope they will view your original comment via the edited button where you described me as angry.

It’s such a highly personal topic and I can very well understand why it would grate.

Whether others view it as right or wrong, many of us were also taught to keep health matters and particularly women’s health matters private.

I think it’s even our pets will hide anything physical that might make them vulnerable in the wild. The instinct to keep health matters things like this private is often about protecting oneself.

Yes! All of that. I have had these but then it’s intermittent and so I wondered if it was something else, stress?

I was getting flushes but they’ve stopped. I was super stressed at the time and started watching my heart rate and it corresponded.

Definitely don’t have the memory I once did - not so much fog, just not like before but have been working on simplifying my life and trying to mindful which that has seemed to help
me at least stop losing things.

Aches sometimes also, for the first time in my life.

I’ve also lost muscle mass and strength. Started strength training. Very hard sometimes but it’s helping so much. Working on my diet as a result - more protein seems to help.

It’s all such an indignity.

i forgot to mention weight gain!!! Oh my word, that’s been a shock!

Have you looked into HRT? I’m thinking about it and a few friends have highly recommended.

One particularly said she struggled with weight for her adult life and now since starting HRT has slimmed down and can eat what she wishes. And she looks fantastic.

Wildgoat · 09/10/2026 21:36

Huh? How on earth be using the correct term be some sort of play to make yourself seem, you’re not in menopause, how very odd,

I'm nearly 58 and have only just gone a year with no periods but it sure as hell wasn’t vanity that made me rant about being peri menopausal for the last 9 years and the affect it was having on my mental health, my joints, my sex life and my never ending fatigue.

Are you taking HRT?

Yes I’m on hrt. It has definitely helped with symptoms but not completely cured them all. I am certainly better with it as tried reducing a few months ago which wasn’t good.

Moving to continuous progesterone a couple of years ago was fabulous as it stopped the roller coaster of emotions through my cycle.

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 18/10/2026 22:24

I went to my GP about peri menopause symptoms and she told me it wasn't the menopause because I was still having periods. And then told me the flooding I was experiencing was due to my age.

Anyway, nearly ten years on I am still in peri menopause, have just started HRT and it's a bloody miracle.

Is your GP daft? Peri-menopause, as a term, exists to describe the symptoms one experiences before periods actually cease. Ergo, you still having periods and also symptoms that relate to your age is peri - menopause.

RobertaFirmino · 18/10/2026 23:07

I'm not one to get my knickers in a twist about scientific prefixes. I'm just happy we CAN talk about it freely. I'm 50 and can remember my DM and friends making sure no men were in the vicinity and talking in hushed tones about 'the change'. I thought there was an actual condition called 'Timeoflife', the amount of times DDad would blame his mother's crankiness on it.

remembranceofthingspast · 18/10/2026 23:09

I don't think it's vain but we did use to just call it the menopause.

Funnily enough I try not to see that particular GP anymore.

To make it worse, women's health is apparently her specialism.

I have had issues but I just call it the menopause to save time 🤷‍♀️

Then you'd be wrong.
Menopause is actually what you call it when you have had NO periods for 12 months.
Until then... its peri-menopause.
