To expect a 50 yr old man to be able to change a duvet cover.

As it says on the time really. Any time he changes it (always prompted by me) he manages to put it in the wrong way (super king size duvet so wider than long). He did it again yesterday only this time the duvet cover was inside out too. Asked him to fix it and he faffed around with it but made it worse. I refused to fix it or sleep under it so grabbed a spare duvet and used that myself last night. Today he asked me to fix it because he just can't do it. Too small a hill to die on???

It’s not difficult. Turn the duvet cover inside out, lay it on the bed, place duvet on top, roll duvet and diver cover from the closed top part. When you get to the other end place corners inside duvet cover and unroll, the cover goes on while you unroll it. It’s not difficult to work out which way the duvet fits the bed for goodness sake. I agree with weaponised incompetence, the more he changes it the easier he’ll learn. It would be his job from now on until he learns.

I'm trying really hard to picture that but it's just not working 😭

Hmm, there are things that DP finds easy that I just seem to constantly mess up, eg putting up picture hook - I often manage to bend the nail/hook thing as I'm hammering, or go at the wrong angle and damage the wall. So now I just prefer him to do it.

But that's partly because me getting it wrong potentially has a permanent negative effect, ie wall is damaged. That's not the case with a duvet cover, he could just keep working at it until it's right.

I think l am pretty competent at most things but l bloody hate putting on duvet covers. Always call dh to help. Especially if all our adult kids have been home and there is lots to do. We just do it together. I also call him if l get a puncture and he comes running. It doesn't always have to be a big deal.

Same here :)

TheeNotoriousPIG · 05/10/2026 17:07

I was surprised on a sixth form trip that a boy couldn't make his own bed, and that there were even more boys in the same boat at university. Thus, it would not shock me to find older men who were apparently incapable of it!

The best ones are the ones that have the patience to learn (a male housemate at university left with a degree and the ability to cook and make his bed, thanks to some of the girls in our house). The rest of them can get in the bin, quite frankly, because I'm not going to clean up after them, and I don't see why any other woman should.

I’ve always put my label along the bottom 🤷🏻‍♀️

Same or else it crinkles when you snuggle into it

no one likes it enjoyed changing a double /king duvet but it’s something that needs to be done weekly

I hate putting duvet covers on and I feel like it takes me ages to get it right. I do ask my DH for help from time to time when I’ve already done other things and don’t want to bother with it. It’s either lumps in places or when I think I have it and put it on the bed it bunches in places. I’ve done different techniques and it is still a pain to do. I rather vacuum the house, wash dishes by hand, than put a duvet cover on.

I grew up with American comforters and miss them, even more so since I still have to take the duvet to the laundromat to wash like I did when I lived in the States although now I think most in-home American washing machines could fit a superking duvet in.

Google something like ‘duvet cover burrito method’, it should bring up some YouTube links. Theres at least one linked to upthread.
It Is quite hard to get your head round because even while you’re doing it, it doesn’t seem like it can work but then it all comes right like magic.

gamerchick · 05/10/2026 20:20

I'm pretty sure a superking would make me a bit shabby tbh. I don't care if it ends up inside out either though.

It most certainly doesn't need to be done weekly - here we use top sheets, so much easier!

I’m of the fresh clean bedding once a week

my mum did it and I do it

but from decades of being on mn - I know it’s a very divided topic

many weekly like me

many 2 mths 🤮

and some inbetween 😂

The point I was making that if you use a top sheet you can wash the sheets weekly, you don't need to wash the duvet cover.

MissingMyDadAlready · 06/10/2026 06:46

More training & practice necessary IMO.

I need a video of this because I'm trying to picture it and failing 🤣

It will probably be somewhere on Youtube. Honestly. I'm very short (5ft) and can do this. There's really no excuse for a full grown adult to be unable to do this barring actual physical issues.

BCBird · 06/10/2026 07:49

I am a 56 year old woman. I can't do it. Easier with two.people

BCBird · 06/10/2026 07:50

I use a top sheet too.

Flutterbees · 06/10/2026 07:53

If you can put a pillowcase on a pillow, you can put a duvet in a duvet cover. My 13 year old son can do it.

Mine match and can’t have non matching pillow and duvet 😂

IzzyLeng · 06/10/2026 09:13

I used to struggle with the king size duvet, it would be all bunched up inside. My excuse was that I’m very short so couldn’t shake it out! 😁. We have 2x single duvets now. Much less sleep disturbance and easier to change the covers. Plus I can wash the duvets when the cat wees on the bed!

my superking duvet fits in my UK washing machine and dryer.

What size machine? I can’t even fit a double in my 9kg machine. My duvets are wool though so a bit denser I guess. I’m definitely buying a bigger machine next time I get one.

Mischance · 06/10/2026 09:35

Maybe you could show him the right technique? - or do it together? - it is always easier with two.

I now have washable duvets so I do not have to bother with changing them.

My friend once gave a hilarious description of her OH putting on a duvet cover - we were in fits, especially as she described his increasing bad temper over it.

10 kg but my duvet is not wool and not high tog. Tumble dryer is 10 kg too. My view is you can always wash and dry a smaller load in a larger machine but not the other way around.

IzzyLeng · 06/10/2026 09:43

Yeah I think it’s the combination of being wool and a winter weight duvet. I can just cram a double in the washer but I was too scared to actually wash it as not sure any water would have been able to fit in. 🤣
