To expect a 50 yr old man to be able to change a duvet cover.

As it says on the time really. Any time he changes it (always prompted by me) he manages to put it in the wrong way (super king size duvet so wider than long). He did it again yesterday only this time the duvet cover was inside out too. Asked him to fix it and he faffed around with it but made it worse. I refused to fix it or sleep under it so grabbed a spare duvet and used that myself last night. Today he asked me to fix it because he just can't do it. Too small a hill to die on???

To be fair to him, I have been changing duvets for over 60 years (my family were early adopters) without a hitch but have just got a new cover which makes it extremely difficult to tell the inside from the outside. There's only one seam and the pattern is the same inside and out. I spend AGES turning it over and over in my hands hunting for that bloody seam!

I can get it on the actual duvet the right way though.

FredbassetOT · 05/10/2026 09:13

Get him to do it again. Every single time.
It's how my kids learned at 5...

This sounds like such a good idea I’m going to try it, thanks. I find it really difficult visualising stuff but hope it works as I do it!

I’ve tried the basic inside out method but if the cover’s not inside out already I can never be arsed and do the angry stuffing with loads of cover getting in the way and swearing as it inevitably turns into more faff.

It’s a ballache to be sure but I can guarantee that if this was a task set by their boss these men would bloody be able to do it first time and every time since. If they can’t, they need to do it til they get the hang of it. Practise makes perfect!

There are loads of videos on Youtube which demonstrate this method.

OP, you need to give your DH the link to one and leave him to it.

Because they're horrible to sleep under? You sometimes find them in hotels/other accommodation and I hate them.

We change the duvet cover together because it's much easier as a 2 person job but still have to count the squares (ours is 8 squares across by 9 vertically) to get it the right way around.

Edited

This - counting the squares is the way to get a superking duvet the right way round.

But this is fine. That's lovely. Known issue and you collaborate to get it right. Hopefully he helps you with other tasks. PS Super king - bloody nightmare. I have to do that on my own. Fine when you are younger, but not in your 60's!

I am in my 70's Try the burrito method.

My DP is not a team player and could not cope with this. He cannot handle both of us gardening at the same time in case he has to wait a nanosecond for a trowel!

Christmas present decided - buy him his own trowel 🤣

Super king is tricky, we normally treat this as a 2 person job

I do my super king alone using burrito method.

COVERLESS DUVETS!!!!!
Saves time and arguements and that devestating feeling when you are ready for bed but it still needs putting back together!

DustyMaiden · 05/10/2026 09:31

Don’t be absurd woman. He had a willy. Everyone knows if you have a Willy you can’t do these sort of things. There is no way you can cook, organise, clean. You should have some compassion for the afflicted.

I'd love one but can only find fairly high tog. I sleep under a 1 tog summer and winter, sometimes just the empty cover or a sheet in summer

You need a 12kg washing machine and dryer for this. Not everyone has the space!

AIiswatchingyou · 05/10/2026 09:36

I'm rubbish at this and I've changed duvet covers 1000s of time.

Yes I know the whole theory and I'm better now than I was but I'm certainly not trying to be incompetent - it just comes naturally.

I'm sure there are things he finds easier than you do.

I have neither of those. They dry in about 3-4 hours.

Mum2Fergus · 05/10/2026 09:38

We have 2 super kings and I utterly hate having to do the bedding on them…it’s like an Olympic sport 🤣

Interesting! What size is your washing machine? I dont have space for a put up dryer. Do u dry it in the tumble?

Its an integrated one so only 9kg and I chuck it over a washing maiden to dry as we don’t have a tumble dryer.

Bloody hell. "Weaponised incompetence" "Take him to be assessed for dementia" etc etc.

There are frequent MN threads about duvets but if it's a woman writing the thread they don't get told to get assessed for dementia, and there are endless faux "wait...what?" posts when people find out that some duvets aren't square and that they need to be turned 90 degrees to fit the cover correctly - something that small children with shape sorter toys seem to be able to fathom pretty quickly.

There are always loads of posts saying "well I'm only 4 feet 6 and my arms don't reach". Every single duvet/duvet cover I have ever owned can fold in both directions so there is no need for long arms.

DustyMaiden · 05/10/2026 09:55

@godmum56That sounds like an excellent solution. He may even be able to clean up the mess it makes.

Hharebell · 05/10/2026 09:57

I use 2 clothes pegs
Lay thr duvet on the bed
Lay the inside out cover on top
Go in with one arm to the top corner, grab the duvet , pull out a little bit ,secure with clothes peg. Do the same on the other side then pull the cover over a bit and shake. That way the duvet is anchored at the top. Don't shake too hard and use strong pegs so they stay put for the shaking 🙂

do it in the garden, use the hose afterwards....or so I am told....I have no direct knowledge <innocent look>

Being unable to determine the inside and outside of a duvet cover is quite concerning. I wonder whether he manages to dress himself appropriately.

😆I wonder if he wears his underpants outside his trousers, like Superman ?!

quackquack1514 · 05/10/2026 10:04

If he's really that useless, then make sure he compensates in other ways that you deem useful.

Alternatively, sleep in a separate bed in a separate room. He can wash his own sheets or not. If he contracts fleas, it's time he had his own house.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 05/10/2026 08:57

I know this isn’t the point but I have a super king size and I’m sure it’s a square!

Maybe I am incompetent to think this but I don’t ask anyone to come back and do it for me (don’t have a partner / spouse to ask but my point is I manage)

But no YANBU! He should be able to do this himself and it’s not too small a hill

They are usually 220x260.

TheCoolHare · 05/10/2026 10:08

Isn't a super king sized duvet cover more of a two-person job anyway?

Pillow covers - easy. Bed sheet - fine to do, especially fitted ones. Most double bed duvet covers however really are better done with two people.

It's possible with one, for sure, but as the comments attest to, it's not the easiest job in the world especially if you're not tall or have the longest arm span.
