I don't really eat much sweet stuff but I really fancied something tonight, so I made some pancakes. Took about 15 mins, so quick and cheap. We had them with lemon and sugar....mmmm
Nothing fancy ....but delicious!

What is your simple and underrated favorite?

I could eat a plateful of just buttery runner or green beans, so fresh and simple.

Even better with garlic butter 😊

Loving this post! Those who make poached eggs, can you please share your method. I love poached eggs and always order them when I go out for brunch but, despite being a fairly decent chef, I always ruin them when I try to make them at home. Thank you 🙏🏻

Ham/cheese and piccalilli sandwuch
cheese and lettuce sandwich
baked potatoes
ploughmans
poached eggs on toast - with ham if I feel fancy
I do like a fishfinger sandwich too.

Boil a small pan of water, whilst it’s still boiling add the eggs by cracking them on the side of the pan. Turn heat down to simmer and spoon off all the white that’s come to the surface during the boil.
Leave in for 2 ish mins, remove with slotted spoon.
I don’t add vinegar to the water but a lot of people do.

I used to have a tiny frying pan and poached eggs used to come out amazingly in that. It was just big enough to fit in one at a time with the boiling water. I'm not great at doing them in a saucepan.
I know some people swirl the boiling water in the pan first so the egg white swirls around the yolk when breaking it into the water. It doesn't work for me though.

lol I often get mocked for this as being a “grandmother”- but like many many posters-
baked potato with beans (or cheese and mash if I’m feeling fancy) haha
corned beef hash with beans (fried onions if I’m feeling fancy)
in fact if I ever get asked what kind of side dish I want or am feeling unwelll- it’s mashed or baked potato with salt- either on itS own or with cheese:beans/ soft onions
guilty pleasure is tinned spaghetti with cheese, and I haven’t read the entire thread but have you tried the pre made pancakes they do now? They fit in the freezer so easy and are just flat like tortilla wraps so come in really handy to defrost in minutes. Add your sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice and you’re right on your way to delicious sweet treat zones, alone or with others! Yum! Yikes it’s nearly 5:30am and you all have my tastebuds
tingling!

beans on toast. Had some last night after a very busy day where I only had breakfast. Simple easy and hit the spot last night

Another vote for Beans on Toast here. Nothing finer

Beans on toast. Co op beans are my favourite at the moment. Yum.

We have beans on toast once a week it’s a great cheap tea! We all love it - gradually as the kids are older now we need more beans but it’s still cheap as chips and a favourite

dottiedodah · 05/10/2026 07:23

Crusty white bread thickly buttered and golden syrup .. yum !

NotWaitingPatiently · 05/10/2026 07:27

@PeopleThatYouThoughtYouKnew

I've just looked up ready made pancakes / crepes......wow, they are more than double the price and the ingredients list really put me off. I will stick to making my own.
Homemade ones freeze really well, either layer them with silicone paper or roll each one up.

I like stirring a little bit of butter into baked beans. It thinckens the sauce a tiny bit and tastes amazing.

Last night didn't want dinner but about 10 felt peckish, had a bowl of cornflakes, absolutely delicious.

Cereal is my go to! Hitting menopause my taste buds have really changed but i can always manage cereal! Love cornflakes but my particular fav just now is weetabix with whole milk and a sprinkling of brown sugar. Food of the gods!

Autumnalhibernationisthedream · 05/10/2026 10:57

Another for on toast and a glass of milk. Apparently one of the only things that covers every food group needed in the correct proportion! Great thread op!!

Tinned tomatoes on toast. Black pepper.

Rediscovered it recently at a quaint B&B. Took me back to my student days when I didn’t have much money.

Delicious!

I love tinned tomatoes on fried bread! Reminds me of british holidays at the seaside when i was a kid, just delicious.

anon666 · 05/10/2026 11:05

The same happened to me! I often get a bit grumpy and fussy these days about what I feel like eating, especially if I get ‘past hunger’ into not knowing what to eat territory. I usually have Special K with red berries, which I never eat for breakfast, but keep just for those evenings when cereal is the only food I can tolerate.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 05/10/2026 11:18

Avo toast and poached eggs. Plenty of salt and pepper.

I don't know if it's my age or something mounjaro did to me but I love plain food these days. That's not to say I don't enjoy a nice curry or a spicy sauce but I go far more for plain food now with good ingredients instead. Used to be mad on condiments too and I'm not that fussed now.

Oh that's interesting. I didn't think of menopause changing my taste buds.

DeftGoldHedgehog · 05/10/2026 11:21

Mine seem to be doing the opposite of what menopause does though and flavours are heightened not reduced as plain food seems tastier.

That's interesting thinking of it in that way.. i am definitely struggling with meat. I feel like when i was at the other end (puberty) and i didn't eat meat for six years. As i agreed with another poster i can always manage cereal and love sandwiches and crackers and cheese etc. i even struggled with potatoes though the other night 😦

My hubby gets so stressed with me not knowing what i want to eat! And then i definitely get 'hangry' lol, when i still had periods i used to call it 'hormungry'. Thank god for cereal and sandwiches and crackers with cheese and tomatoes!
