I don't really eat much sweet stuff but I really fancied something tonight, so I made some pancakes. Took about 15 mins, so quick and cheap. We had them with lemon and sugar....mmmm
Nothing fancy ....but delicious!

What is your simple and underrated favorite?

Cold sandwiches like ham & tomato with chunky homemade chips.

dottydoglover · 04/10/2026 19:01

Poached eggs on toast

sprigatito · 04/10/2026 19:02

Egg salad sandwiches. Can’t get enough of them.

Pallisers · 04/10/2026 19:02

My parents always finished their evening meal with a slice of good white bread and jam. Had some recently and it really is like a cheap dessert.

TheProvincialLady · 04/10/2026 19:05

@onwardandupwards I know you asked someone else, but this is the recipe I use (I have the book). I made some this morning 😋

Can't stand Claudia winklman, but recently I read about her making toasted cheese sandwiches and marmite.
Dusted off the breville, it's a game chang.
Cupasoup and a Claudia toasite has been my lunch of choice for the past week

PeppyRoseBeaker · 04/10/2026 20:22

Instant whip

NSA2103 · 04/10/2026 20:24

Homemade bread.

Bacon sandwich on cheap white bread, squashed flat before eating so the bacon fat seeps into the bread.

Been poorly last couple of days off food but today had exactly that and it tasted wonderful and I feel better

Swervethewinger · 04/10/2026 20:38

I like plain white toast with salty butter. Just normal white supermarket bread.

And a simple treat like a kit kat or ready salted walkers. There's so many flavours and options these days but the simple ones are timeless.

Cheese on toast. Or Welsh rarebit if you're being fancy about it. With Wash Your Sister sauce.

None of that fancy Italian, "Pizza" tomato puree infested muck.

Extra marks for making it under an eye level gas grill but I don't think they really exist these days.

Eye-level gas grill immediately made me think of my mum eating those little tins of Toast Toppers. I always thought them vile but I wonder if I'd go for it now!

For us it had to be fried eggs, chips and beans, sausage, mash and beans or beans on toast. So, basically beans 😁

ChewbaccasMrs · 04/10/2026 20:49

A fresh crusty roll, real butter and decent ham,so simple but I'll often have that for my dinner that or beans on toast, hot buttered toast and it has to be Branston beans.

I’m on a low fibre diet this week prepping for a colonoscopy, realised that pretty much everything I usually eat was on the “not allowed list”, so went and bought some cheap white bread and some Kellogg’s cornflakes - hadn’t had either in years and really enjoyed both!

All of the mentions of egg & chips have me absolutely craving that. My mum used to make the chips in a pan of oil on the hob and they were delicious! Has anyone managed to nail a similar result in an air fryer or am I dreaming?!
Would love to recreate these but don’t fancy trying then chip pan approach myself, not that we ever had an issue, but I remember being vaguely terrified at the time, as a result of tv ads warning of house fires, I think!

Eggy bread and bacon 🥓

Eggy bread it my go to when I am having a bad day. Ketchup for me not bacon.

Laura95167 · 04/10/2026 21:33

I love semolina with a blob of jam, haven’t had it for decades though

I made myself some the other night! Haven't had it in ages and found half a big packet in the cupboard! Had mine with Golden Syrup though! 😋

Emeraldforest · 04/10/2026 21:34

I could eat a plateful of just buttery runner or green beans, so fresh and simple.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 04/10/2026 21:37

White thick bread with salted butter
Jacket potato with a good dollop of salted butter and lots of mature cheddar
Thick chips with vinegar
Fried egg sandwich

boredwithfoodprob · 04/10/2026 21:46

I had beans on toast today for lunch for the first time in AGES. It was soooo nice - brown bread toast with butter & marmite, beans on top with a bit of grated cheddar and a splash of Worcestershire sauce 😋

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 04/10/2026 22:00

Oh dear Lord, I am actually salivating 🤐mustn't drool everywhere

I always do my shopping on a Tuesday. My shopping list tomorrow, written in Mondays, will be thoroughly geared towards this thread.

Marmite pasta
Pan fried broccoli
Jackets, cheese and beans
Egg, chips and beans
Proper, chunky porridge
Toad-in-the-hole
Yorkshire puds, filled with mashed potato, doused with gravy.
Veg stew and dumplings

My children are going to be delighted although may also worry I've lost my mind

I have one. Dreading having to buy the next cooker as they might not exist any more :(

Just keep a damp tea towel next to in in case of fire. Will starve the fire of oxygen :D

Eye level gas grill.

The king of grills.

MoonWoman69 · 04/10/2026 22:10

My big pan which I use for everything, doubles as my chip pan! I have a large Kilner jar I use to save the cooled oil in. And a wide, slotted stainless steel thingy to scoop the chips out with!
My comforts are a cheese sandwich and a tomato cuppa soup. Has to be the Heinz one though! I have a stockpile!
Lemon and sultana drop scones, toasted and with lots of butter. So easy to make.
Macaroni cheese, heavily loaded with Stilton! And topped with sliced tomatoes.
Corned beef, fried onion and mashed potato fry up with bread and butter.
Tinned plum tomatoes on toast, thickened with a bit of tomato puree.
Bubble and squeak with bread and butter.
Fried bread, tinned chopped tomatoes reduced down with a splodge of tomato puree in and fried Spam. That one is my top comfort go to.

Butterfly cakes. Nowadays cakes have so much icing and extra bits on. A little buttercream for me is just right.

I wholeheartedly agree. Less is more. My DGM used to make beautiful butterfly cakes- but you rarely see them now, it’s all 6 inches of fondant and decorated to high heaven. I scrape it all off!
