I don't really eat much sweet stuff but I really fancied something tonight, so I made some pancakes. Took about 15 mins, so quick and cheap. We had them with lemon and sugar....mmmm
Nothing fancy ....but delicious!

What is your simple and underrated favorite?

I'm vegetarian but my friend swears by fried eggs, chips and tuna. Can someone try it and tell me what they think?

Egg in a cup with lots of butter.

This is mine too!

MyOliveCritic · 03/10/2026 21:38

A Victoria sponge cake with jam and a dusting of caster sugar.
Toast and marmite
Macaroni cheese, piping hot and bubbling from the oven.

Cheese on toast. Or Welsh rarebit if you're being fancy about it. With Wash Your Sister sauce.

None of that fancy Italian, "Pizza" tomato puree infested muck.

Extra marks for making it under an eye level gas grill but I don't think they really exist these days.

I loved my mum’s old eye level grill.
You could see what you were grilling
You didn’t suddenly fill the kitchen with smoke from burned on grease from something
You could see when your Mum’s favourite tea cakes were about to set on fire, are they still a thing ?
I just much preferred them, no back breaking bending over to see the grill
The fact that you can’t have them now, is probably the reason we never grill anything, and why air fryers are so popular, you can easily see what you are in effect grilling.

Toasted bacon sandwich.

MaeshoweDragon · 03/10/2026 21:51

We just had leftover roast chicken in gravy with mash. Plain, simple, gobbled up by all.

Also had egg fried sandwiches for lunch. We were at a buffet last night and we were given leftovers to take home... curled up sandwich triangles - soak them in beaten egg, fry and slather in condiments of choice. Remember having them as a child.

Beans and cheese on toast
Sausage and mash with loads of gravy
My guilty pleasure...cheese and broccoli pasta from lidl.

I haven't liked any grill I've ever used since those days!

I love making scones because I'm always amazed they're so simple and really do turn into proper scones (and I'm not great at cakes, but scones work). The other thing I love is on a friday i get one of the kids to make scrambled eggs on toast and we just have that with other stuff put on the table (cucumber, tomato, dried fruit). Then if they're still hungry they have porridge and tinned fruit before bed. It's nice not having to think, as we basically just eat the food that is easily available.

Omelette

That first cup of tea and jam on toast you get after you give birth. I don't like tea or jam on toast but that tasted like it had been prepared by God himself.

LucyBrownCow · 03/10/2026 22:30

American pancakes with maple syrup and a side of bacon.

Macaroni cheese, preferably with breadcrumbs on top.

Whenever I'm home alone, I'm partial to a sort of ploughman's with bread, cheese, pickle, and whatever else I happen to fancy: sliced apple, carrots, hummus, etc. When people were talking about "girl dinner" a couple of years ago, I realised I was part of a trend I hadn't known existed. 😀

What, you got jam??? Did you go private?

I'm the custodian of all the ancient family recipes: all the lovely simple soups and stews and breads and cakes my grandparents made. 😋 Cheap and tasty and no waste!

CoastalCalm · 03/10/2026 22:45

Egg and beans on toast is something that we started eating as a cheap quick meal but now we look forward to it

Scrambled eggs in a cup with butter and maybe some cheese. 3 mins tops.

Haha my grandma has one!

Tinned tomatoes on toast. Black pepper.

Rediscovered it recently at a quaint B&B. Took me back to my student days when I didn’t have much money.

Delicious!

I also rediscovered tinned plum tomatoes on toast which I had as a vegan breakfast option at a very nice cafe. Have recreated several times at home since. Yum!

EverybodyLTB · 03/10/2026 23:45

I had the simplest of simple the other day: standing up in the kitchen, boiled egg in hand, still a tiny bit warm, after each bite a new pinch of sea salt. Perfect ratio per bite.

Ham and butter sandwiches on crusty bread. Delish. The French haven't forgotten this one, but we have.

Me too - I often have an ‘emergency’ ham sandwich 💕

Busybeemumm · 04/10/2026 00:33

Cheap white bread and crisps sandwich 😁

Nat6999 · 04/10/2026 01:23

Egg & salad cream sandwiches
A proper chip butty on a buttered breadcake
A good fry up
Bread & beef dripping

Needtocomeupwithabetterusername · 04/10/2026 02:56

Cheese toastie with beans
homemade soup with bread and butter
jacket potato with cheese and beans
cheese on beans on toast
crackers with cheese/pate/dips
tuna/mayo with a really simple dlad
roast chicken dinner

sashh · 04/10/2026 04:25

Another vote for beans on toast, but my ultimate comfort food is a soft boiled egg with toast soldiers.

TwoNicePuppies · 04/10/2026 05:06

Corned beef pie 😋
