I don't really eat much sweet stuff but I really fancied something tonight, so I made some pancakes. Took about 15 mins, so quick and cheap. We had them with lemon and sugar....mmmm
Nothing fancy ....but delicious!

What is your simple and underrated favorite?

A home made scone is a thing of wonder.

As is fresh Victoria sponge

you don’t need brownies or fancy doughnuts

PuppyMonkey · 03/10/2026 19:04

Cup of tea and two pieces of toast and butter. Nothing better.

quackquack1514 · 03/10/2026 19:05

Butter on homemade bread
Steak
Prawn omelette

Once you start just eating whole foods anything factory made tastes awful.

I make scotch pancakes / drop scones from a 1960s Mrs Beeton's recipe, take no time to make and cook on a griddle pan, far less sugary than the nasty shop bought ones. If I put berries in them when cooking, we call them splats!

Ham and butter sandwiches on crusty bread. Delish. The French haven't forgotten this one, but we have.

We’ve forgotten ham sandwiches?

mathanxiety · 03/10/2026 19:10

Bangers and mash with peas.
American style pancakes.
Fish fingers on buttered toast with a squirt of lemon from a lemon shaped bottle.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 03/10/2026 19:13

Usually cheese on toast but lately I have had a yearning for dippy eggs and soldiers.

mathanxiety · 03/10/2026 19:13

@Redheadedstepchild

My mum still has one of those eye level gas grills. The oven packed it in a few years ago but she won't get rid of it and buy another because she loves that grill.

I used to make toasted cheese with tomato relish on the grill when I got home from school, many decades ago. Fond memories.

I love a rock cake. Simple but delicious, takes 5 minutes to make and 15 minutes to cook - I often knock some up in the time it takes to make a cup of tea to go with them!

Never forget the 'humble pea'.
Protein ✔️
Fibre ✔️
Jolly nice green colour ✔️

I'd say maybe these are underrated but definitely not forgotten it's what a lot of people prepare regularly I think they push those Gousto type meals to make it appear that everyone is enjoying some fusion cuisine daily but I don't know anyone that does that personally. There will always be classic dishes and pub menus reflect this also

I just made an apple crumble, so simple and delicious! We hardly ever have dessert. It was a low sugar version and you couldn’t tell at all 😋

Newsenmum · 03/10/2026 19:21

Pasta
grated cheese
black pepper

😍

FknOmniShambles · 03/10/2026 19:24

Home made leek and potato soup, plenty of butter in it!

BritishDesiGirl · 03/10/2026 19:24

Cheese and pickle sandwich on white bread thick and lurpack or my current favourite Norpak

Eggs and chips
French toast sprinkled with sugar

Eggs and beans with a homemade paratha made extra crispy using ghee

Rice pudding

amincharge · 03/10/2026 19:26

Cauliflower cheese with a ton of cheddar and Stilton…am having it later! Obviously crusty bread as a side !

Ilovemyshed · 03/10/2026 19:26

Love a pancake. Love them with lemon sugar and butter and as crepe suzette.
Also love a savoury pancake with chicken and mushroom sauce.

A simple piece of braised beef, good and savoury with some carrots.
Cheese on toast
buttered crumpets
a proper english muffin toasted with butter
chicken broth with pearl barley
a good cottage pie with cheesy mash

We love peas in our house.

Cheesy peasy mash and cheese peasy pasta are family staples.

Good soup generally is such a great thing. Comforting, tasty, has vegetables so has to be healthy.

Mmm jambon beurre. I agree, simple is best. Can’t stand over filled sandwiches! Am also partial to a rosette when in France.

Trotula · 03/10/2026 19:32

Buttered Cream crackers with marmite and a slice of cheddar

mac and cauliflower cheese topped with sliced or cherry tomatoes

tinned mackerel in tomato sauce on toast and grilled to heat

Grilled Cheese and sliced tomatoes on toast sprinkled with Worcester sauce
Jacket potato with tuna mayo

Redheadedstepchild · 03/10/2026 19:32

Boil in the bag kippers with the butter in a rosette shape.

I'm also quite homesick for those frozen fish pies. Cod Mornay and the like. With mashed potato piped into rosettes too.

Can't get them in the rotten abroads.

BasilParsley · 03/10/2026 19:36

I have recently rediscovered beans on toast. Hadn't had them for years (I think I went off them due to changed recipes probs 15 years ago at least!). I thought about them the other week as a breakfast dish so bought some.

I make my own bread (white bread flour, fresh yeast, a smidgeon of olive oil and a pinch of salt but nothing else). A slice of that, toasted, allowed to cool a bit then slathered in full-fat Lurpak butter (proper - not the spreadable rubbish) and topped with a small tin of beans of the 57 variety cooked on the hob in a small saucepan rather than nuked in the microwave is really awesomely lovely.

I do alternate between fried/scrambled egg on toast, cheese spread on toast or I will occasionally go posh and have avocado and boiled egg with a round of toast for breakfast but toast for breakfast is key it seems!

RobertaFirmino · 03/10/2026 19:37

A toasted teacake with butter and a good, strong pot of tea.
Decent cheese on a cream cracker.
HM shortbread. Really simple but so delicious. Esp. with the aforementioned pot of tea.
