I don't really eat much sweet stuff but I really fancied something tonight, so I made some pancakes. Took about 15 mins, so quick and cheap. We had them with lemon and sugar....mmmm
Nothing fancy ....but delicious!

What is your simple and underrated favorite?

Just toast. A whopping big plate of hot buttery toast

Lifelover16 · 03/10/2026 20:34

Bacon sandwich on cheap white bread, squashed flat before eating so the bacon fat seeps into the bread.

Meandthegherkin · 03/10/2026 20:35

Plain Greek yoghurt with any random seeds/fruit/peanut butter/cocca powder/lemon curd stirred in. Whatever is to hand. Easy to make taste fancy in about 3 seconds.

AInightingale · 03/10/2026 20:45

We don't even put eggs in pancake mix in our house, so they're even cheaper to make. Just s-r flour, milk and caster sugar. They actually come out fine. Technically I think they're 'pikelets'? I use my mum's old school cookery book for things like that, which is so ancient that eggs were probably still rationed.

BigFatLiar · 03/10/2026 20:51

Simplest thing - warm toast with lots of butter.

MerelyPlaying · 03/10/2026 20:52

Toast and dripping.
and if you have to ask ‘what’s dripping’ … I feel sorry for you, you haven’t lived 😄

(It’s the fat poured off a roast into a bowl and cooled till it sets. In my childhood home, added to every week. Delicious spread on toast with some salt and pepper. )

Welsh cakes, fresh from a hot griddle, with good butter.
Fresh home made bread with butter and cheese/jam/marmite/honey/one of many more toppings.
Home made scones with jam and cream.
Oats with sliced banana, natural yogurt and raisins.
Home made basic chelsea buns (save half the dough when making bread to make them with), especially if topped with caramel icing.
Fried mackerel, fresh sardines, or sea bass, with steamed new potatoes and steamed veg.
Bacon sarnie.
Haggis, neeps and tatties.
Finely shredded cos lettuce tossed in a sharp home made dressing, with chopped sundried tomatoes, olives and cubed Wensleydale.
Pasta tossed in olive oil, herbs and garlic.
I do love food!!

Diversion · 03/10/2026 20:55

Plain pasta with lots of butter and salt.

Betterbeingdead · 03/10/2026 20:57

Cheese and branston pickle on toast cut into fingers like my mum did( has to be grilled )toasted tea cake . Poached eggs on toast

Cel77 · 03/10/2026 20:59

Pancakes too. Cherry jam is lovely.
Plain pasta with olive oil, lemon, salt and pepper
Chickpea salad with avocado and above dressing. Feta added if there.
Soup.
Cheese toastie

Come to think about it, most of the food we eat is simple or not that complex. I like to know what I'm eating. UPF scare me.

A toasted teacake with butter and a good, strong pot of tea.
Decent cheese on a cream cracker.
HM shortbread. Really simple but so delicious. Esp. with the aforementioned pot of tea.

Oh I do love a toasted teacake!

Also a rice pudding cooked in the oven. I sometimes make a big one to use up surplus milk then divide it up in to ramekins and freeze. First though I removed the skin and cut it up and then line each ramekin with a piece of skin. It's the best bit. DH and I can then get portions out of the freezer to have either hot or, in summer, chilled with cream.

Also very partial to poached egg on toast

Betterbeingdead · 03/10/2026 21:07

Ritz crackers cheese and a sliced apple ( has to be jazz I hate mealy apples )

villanova · 03/10/2026 21:20

No-one mentioned fried mushrooms on toast: it became my go-to at the greasy spoon in the local town (one of the few veggie options).
Butter & marmite on toast. Add sliced cheese if really hungry.
Tuna melts: mayo, tuna then grated cheese on panini, toasted.
Our new one is 'air fryer pizza' - thick bread, panini or other suitable bread-based based, spread with red pesto, pizza sauce or, at worst, ketchup, then any toppings that need using up: sliced mushrooms, peppers, olives etc plus cheese - air fry for 4-5mins.

Frenzi · 03/10/2026 21:24

Crispy yorkshire pudding, syrup and cream.

Or left over gravy from the roast dinner, lashings of mint sauce and thick slices of bread and butter.

chocolatestodgeandcustard · 03/10/2026 21:24

Toasted fruit loaf and butter or toasted teacakes and butter, scrambled egg on toast with little chips of onion or spring onion added, and soy sauce.

Egg and proper chips for my dinner tonight because everyone else is out, lovely!

When you say proper chips do you mean cooked in a deep fat frier?

I love a rock cake. Simple but delicious, takes 5 minutes to make and 15 minutes to cook - I often knock some up in the time it takes to make a cup of tea to go with them!

We made rock cakes today they are LOVELY! My recipe has nutmeg and lemon zest and it is SO good.

MongoosePerfume · 03/10/2026 21:26

Tinned tomatoes on toast. Black pepper.

Rediscovered it recently at a quaint B&B. Took me back to my student days when I didn’t have much money.

Delicious!

I was going to say the same thing! So old fashioned and so delicious. I made some rock cakes last weekend for the first time in years and they were demolished within minutes.

I can’t stand the sickly crap we are sold these days. Doughnuts covered in icing sugar and jelly sweets <vom>

gillefc82 · 03/10/2026 21:28

Chucky eggs and soldiers, served with a generous pinch of salt for each egg - my Dad’s are my ultimate comfort food and all I ever want to eat if I’m not feeling well.
Super noodles, bacon or chicken flavour - survived most of my early to mid 20s eating these for tea.
Crumpets - covered with a shit ton of butter and eaten stood up in the kitchen, in front of the toaster.

accidentalmillionaire · 03/10/2026 21:29

Pasta with butter and marmite

actually anything with marmite

AbzMoz · 03/10/2026 21:31

I love a lot of convoluted foods but my absolute favourites are the simplest things on earth

  • colcannon or champ
  • bacon baps
  • chips and gravy on a barm
  • Cup of tea with digestives
Twogingercats · 03/10/2026 21:32

Banana sandwiches or banana on toast

InOverMyHead84 · 03/10/2026 21:33

A cheese sandwich on white bread, well buttered

Doesn't even need to be fancy bread and posh cheddar. It just bloody works.

bgi · 03/10/2026 21:34

Gosh I loved these as a kid and haven't ever had them since! Going to google the recipe and make them for my own DC!
