I don't really eat much sweet stuff but I really fancied something tonight, so I made some pancakes. Took about 15 mins, so quick and cheap. We had them with lemon and sugar....mmmm
Nothing fancy ....but delicious!

What is your simple and underrated favorite?

Home made bread toasted with proper butter.

Jacket potato beans and cheese with a small salad.

Jacket and tuna mayo.

Home made bread, tomato puree, sliced cheese and a bit of onion. Toast under the grill. Like a mini pizza.

Beans on toast.

Leek and potato soup (home made).

Home made jam tarts. My daughter makes these. Or shortbread biscuits. Or fairy cakes.

Sardines on toast (home made bread). I give this to my hungry teenage boy after sport. It’s quick and easy.

Homemade chips (I cook in the oven) with beans and cheese.

Tuna sandwich toasted.

A cup of beans, with a sausage in it. You can use the sausage to scoop the beans oot.

It’s a savoury 99 !

Really strong cheddar, on its own or with crackers. Not much to ask for.

Usually cheese on toast but lately I have had a yearning for dippy eggs and soldiers.

I had soft boiled egg with a buttered slice of toast cut into soldiers for breakfast today. It was lovely. I haven’t had it for years.

Home made root vegetable soup, pureed with dumplings.
poached egg on beans on toast
marmite under softly scrambled eggs on toast
crispy jackets with fluffy middles, cheese and bean combo
liver and onions, carroty mash

Scrambled eggs on toast with lots of salt and pepper.

Hard boiled eggs with salt and pepper and a dab of mayo - amazing.

Jason's sourdough bread toasted, with nice butter and extra salt and pepper.

Beans on buttered toast with cheese under the beans so it melts properly. No extra salt this time but lots of pepper!

I think I have a salt and pepper problem...

Pasta
grated cheese
black pepper

I add raw chopped onion.

As I get older (late fifties) all I want to eat for dinner is meat or fish with potatoes and a load of vegetables . I know it’s considered bland. But I’ve eaten pretty much everything over the years, had various fads, and all I want now is the simple food of my childhood. Meat and two veg. Irish stew. Chicken casserole.

Ap42 · 04/10/2026 17:55

My fav comfort meal is simple beans on toast. You can't beat it.
Also jacket potatoes, and soup with ciabatta bread.

Gengha · 04/10/2026 17:58

I want scrambled egg and toast now. I think I’ll make that for my lunch tomorrow.

Absolutely. Excavated a tin of treacle from the cupboard as I had baking margarine to use up, and made treacle scones. Fab.

Oooh recipe please? I like treacle just spread on buttered white bread. We are talking black treacle aren’t we? Not golden syrup.

Trishthedish · 04/10/2026 18:08

Last night didn't want dinner but about 10 felt peckish, had a bowl of cornflakes, absolutely delicious.

Cheese on toast. Or Welsh rarebit if you're being fancy about it. With Wash Your Sister sauce.

None of that fancy Italian, "Pizza" tomato puree infested muck.

Extra marks for making it under an eye level gas grill but I don't think they really exist these days.

What I wouldn’t give for an eye level gas grill. They made the best toast ever!!

EstoyRobandoSuCasa · 04/10/2026 18:13

I love a rock cake. Simple but delicious, takes 5 minutes to make and 15 minutes to cook - I often knock some up in the time it takes to make a cup of tea to go with them!

Please could you share your recipe if you don't mind? I've not had these since i was little x

I like marmite and mushrooms on toast

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 04/10/2026 18:27

Bacon butty - preferably with avocado & mayo.
It was the first thing I cooked after returning from a holiday in a Muslim country !

madroid · 04/10/2026 18:34

Stewed apple and custard or semolina. Can't go wrong with that in your stomach.

Sunbringer · 04/10/2026 18:44

Honestly? Cabbage. 60p and it works as a side for DH and I for about 3 meals. Chop and pan fry with oil, salt, pepper and a splash of cider vinegar to deglaze and it’s outrageously tasty.

Dontcallmescarface · 04/10/2026 18:47

A fish finger and tartare sauce sandwich...the food of the Gods.

Hellorainyday · 04/10/2026 18:50

I think I have a salt and pepper problem...

Husband has twice made me inedible scrambled eggs, once when it was so black because he’d put so much pepper in it, not a normal amount, it was black
And once when he’d added chopped fresh tomatoes, and mixed them in the scrambled eggs raw

I never asked him to make it for me, either time, he wanted to.

Ive never accepted his offer to make it again.
