Loudly complaining about smell in public loo

Okokokokoh · Yesterday 17:01

Suddenly needed to use the toilet (ibs) in M&S, a lady walked in and kept saying. "Oh god it stinks in here!" Over and over again to everyone in the queue.
aibu or is that a bit mean!? It's a toilet after all. I ended up having to stay in the cubicle for ages because then i was too embarrassed to walk out after she'd been telling everyone over and over again that it stinks.
i did flush multiple times to try and avoid too much smell but I'm not sure what else I could have done.

The woman making the comment was awful. I worked with a woman like that. I had undiagnosed coeliac disease and she’d comment all the time. She kept repeating that people should hold it in and not use a work toilet. When you’re going ten times in the day there’s really no choice.

IBS is painful enough. I hope you’re feeling better now and the flare up is calming down.

And the "hold it in" crowd really don't seem to realise how incredibly stupid they sound.

If they can hold it in till they get home, then they should do that.

It is no more possible to hold in poo than it is to hold in pee. The two are equally a necessity. Neither of the two acts can possibly be predicted, or denied, when required. People with perfectly functional bowels still need to defecate at various times and no, they cannot predict it and nor should anybody be so obsessed by their bowel movements that they try to do so.

We literally have public toilets to avoid this issue. They are for both defecating and urinating. That is their literal purpose.

So, if a person doesn't like that purpose, they can hold it in and go home.

I would also say @Okokokokoh that I've been in plenty of toilets that didn't smell that good before business anyway. So it might of been the overall smell. Please don't worry about it most people will understand it's a safe space

Tbh I can usually predict it and also do a good job holding it in if the only option is a smelly portaloo, which is often the case if I'm on a big site where the proper cabins could be several miles down the haul road. But I wouldn't hold it in till I got home.

I'm glad for you that you can predict defecating. Millions cannot, with or without bowel disease.

And, fortunately, they don't have to, because we have public loos for that very reason.

Do you not think if the OP did have those, she would have used them…

Or time to use them? I have had IBS flare-ups where getting my pants down was a miracle.

I think the vast majority can predict it. I'm yet to see somebody shit themselves mid presentation or on the train etc.

What a bizarre and silly statement. Being able to predict that you will need to shit in five or ten minutes and making it to the loo is the norm, without bowel disease. Some people wear adult nappies for the very reason that they cannot predict it and if they cannot reach a toilet quickly enough will shit themselves in public.

There are public toilets all over the place and people who need to shit a lot are well aware of that. There is even an app to help people find public toilets because it is absolutely, totally normal to have to shit when out in public.

Being able to hold it in until it suits a stranger, is not, in fact, the norm.

It is normal to use public toilets to shit. They exist for people to shit and pee in.

Since you can hold it in, go home and don't use public toilets.

And thus, your problem is solved.

Most people can hold it in longer than 5-10 mins. What about job interviews? The London underground etc?

Are you quite unwell? Why are you so utterly, bizarrely obsessed by other people shitting?

Perhaps you should conduct a poll. Go up to strangers and ask them how long they can hold in a shit for, whether they can predict it and what they do about it.

So, as stated, it is absolutely normal, completely totally and undeniably normal, to shit in public toilets.

That is one half of their function.

End.

Calm down dear.

I'm not obsessed at all. You made some overly dramatic claims that a wild poo suddenly appears and one has to immediately rush to the toilet within 5-10 mins. This is clearly not true for the vast majority of people.

Still shitting on dear? You're babbling and projecting.

Being obsessed with other people's shitting requirements isn't healthy.

Move on.

Hope this helps.

Do you have disease or diagnosis of any bowel disease or syndrome?

If not then please keep your embarrassment to yourself.

Well, one thing you could have done is emerge, look her in the eye, and say, It was me. That would have been an interesting experiment.

Tasselledoldbag · Today 01:43

@Okokokokoh

Do what you have to do for your health to keep yourself comfortable. We all have bodily functions.

For IBS I found ginger tea (get the tea bags and boil ginger too) and reducing stress to work over a longer period.

Haven't RTFT but has anyone mentioned that this woman could have ND?

I'm ND and so my family and social circles are full of ND types!

One group friend verbally stims by phrases which are related to smells and bodily functions.

"You look sweaty! Sweaty! I can see you're sweating! It must stink! Sweaty!"

"It stinks! Stinks like cheese!"

"Sweaty smell! I'm stinky! Don't hug me! I must stink!"

I handed him a clean tissue once and he repeated over and over "it's got bogeys on it! Has it got bogeys on it? I don't want to touch your bogeys! Stop putting your bogeys on me!"

(my personal hygiene is fine as is his and everyone's in the group!)

I like him as a person and he's actually very decent and kind (and successful) , but honestly it's like a 11 year old boy being puerile.

I sometimes avoid being in his line of sight as he points out if he thinks I look "sweaty and smelly" and then loudly repeats his observations 🤣

Same with a ND niece - if she doesn't like someone's outfit she will double down, say specifically how she thinks it looks "weird" over and over again to get her point across.

It can be unsettling to be on the receiving end of this, but if you think there's an explanation for it it might make you feel better?

You are not quoting me here. As you would like I'm out.

Again do you have bowel disease or disorder?

Have you ever shit yourself in a car or had to leave a meeting in the office urgently or had to move out of a retail space urgently. I suspect not.

They are absolutely obsessed with other people's shitting requirements. I suspect some sort of fetish, at this point.

They're also absolutely determined to pretend they believe that what they, personally, can do, is what the vast majority must also do.

I mean, they've stated they can just avoid public toilets. So they should. Problem solved.

And the rest of us, the vast majority, will just continue doing what we normally do - defecating in public toilets when the need arises :)

There's not even a discussion to be had on it, it's what public toilets are for - shitting and peeing. The end.

They're coming across as one of those barking mad types that just have to shout everyone normal down.

What on earth has this got to do with me challenging the assertion that most people don't know when they've got a no2 brewing and can't hold it in for more than 5-10 mins?
