Loudly complaining about smell in public loo

Okokokokoh · 30/09/2026 17:01

Suddenly needed to use the toilet (ibs) in M&S, a lady walked in and kept saying. "Oh god it stinks in here!" Over and over again to everyone in the queue.
aibu or is that a bit mean!? It's a toilet after all. I ended up having to stay in the cubicle for ages because then i was too embarrassed to walk out after she'd been telling everyone over and over again that it stinks.
i did flush multiple times to try and avoid too much smell but I'm not sure what else I could have done.

They are absolutely obsessed with other people's shitting requirements. I suspect some sort of fetish, at this point.

They're also absolutely determined to pretend they believe that what they, personally, can do, is what the vast majority must also do.

I mean, they've stated they can just avoid public toilets. So they should. Problem solved.

And the rest of us, the vast majority, will just continue doing what we normally do - defecating in public toilets when the need arises :)

There's not even a discussion to be had on it, it's what public toilets are for - shitting and peeing. The end.

They're coming across as one of those barking mad types that just have to shout everyone normal down.

Except you're the one writing walls of text lol.

Where did I say I don't use public toilets? You're having an argument with yourself. What I said is that most people know when they need a poo and can wait more than 5-10 mins. It's not usually a panic stations scenario.

If this wasn't the case then it'd be clear as I spend a lot of time traveling with workmates and they rarely need a no2 on the way. I also go on nights out where nobody needs a poo all night. Same when I'm working onsite. People aren't rushing to the toilet left right and centre.

Any chance of you directing me to the post where I said this? Happy to wait.

You don't think most people can hold in a no2 for 5-10 mins?

I think more can't than you assume.

I keep my comments about smelly toilets to myself. IBS poos have a different smell.

Also many shops and shopping centres don’t have windows in their toilets (people throw stuff out of windows to shoplift) plus usually in the middle of the building.

Though I have an issue with farting. Some women think women don’t fart. A few weeks ago I needed to fart in a supermarket. A scruffy looking man was getting stuff from the bottom shelf. Stood by him and let go of a fart. It stank. Everyone looked at the man not me

Shit stinks!

There is a lady at my last place of work who has ibs. I remember walking into the toilets and the smell was toxic, not a normal poo smell. I was about to turn around and leave to use another loo, when she left and said sorry it’s me, I suffer from IBS. I thought how confident she was to say that and apologise for the smell. I ended up staying. Lots of female staff were talking about her making a smell but it really wasn’t her fault at all. If you feel self conscious you could bring a poo spray as they really do work.

I think this is possibly one of the most embarrassing posts I’ve read on MN. Not from the op - from the utter cretins with zero knowledge of bowel disease and even less empathy. We get it, you don’t know what it’s like to have bowel urgency/issues. So just keep your ignorant comments to yourself. You are showing yourselves up with the ‘just hold it in comments’.

And I’ve seen people compete over many things on MN but acting superior over how little your shit stinks is a new low.

ThisWiseRobin · Yesterday 10:30

There are people out there who will fuss about smells, germs etc, loudly, in order to "elevate" themselves above ordinary mortals.
They walk among us, and it's hard to ignore but see her for what she is. A false attention seeker.

When I worked as a carer, the first few times I had to change a pad on a bed bound patient I was almost gagging but the other carers said always carry a Vicks nasal stick in your pocket.... take a good snort in and it completely renders you unable to smell anything for a short period of times. It was a lifeline when someone had C Diff.... I still always have one in my bag, and it comes in very handy for public toilets.

And it's far kinder than spraying some noxious smell over the stinky shit so it's a double whammy.

I had C diff several years ago and was at death’s door.
As for the smell! I couldn’t apologise enough to the hospital staff 😔
I went through loads of air freshener.

fluffiphlox · Yesterday 11:35

Weird yes to comment.
My own view is public loos should be for wees only as anything else holds the queue up which can be bad enough in the women’s. (Though I do understand that everyone can have an emergency).

EmeraldShamrock000 · Yesterday 14:35

You should definitely invest in the spray if you have IBS. It is easier for everyone.
Luckily I am like clockwork at 7am so very rarely need to go anywhere but home.

Yhjan · Yesterday 14:45

The woman was rude and nasty.

RadASH · Yesterday 17:51

Ugh this happened to me at work. The lady didn’t work in my department but she was loudly exclaiming omg smells like something crawled up up there and died. Someone needs to see a doctor..
I used to get stress IBS at work . I know it’s bad but what’s the alternative ? Poo ourselves ?

WhatMyNameis · Yesterday 18:29

It’s a toilet. It’s where you are supposed to shit.

At the train station, 7 months pregnant, I just made it to the loo before my bowels exploded. I was very, very lucky not to shit myself.

A bloke came in - yes into the ladies - shouted “you dirty fucking bitch” and aimed his piss up and over the partition onto me.

Women aren’t allowed to make shit smells apparently.

I can just imagine this woman telling her husband/son how disgusting the toilet smelled and reinforcing this opinion.

To anyone defending her GROW THE FUCK UP.

WhatMyNameis · Yesterday 18:31

Oh and those shit smell covering sprays - they just make the room smell like shit with a side of floral.

Don’t kid yourselves.

Thank you, that this a thread of women is utterly disgusting, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Did you have any of the drops a pp mentioned or the VIPoo variety?
It is awful that she exclaimed loudly, it is equally awful if you need a quick wee and the place smells terrible.

Surely you can suffer it without complaint for a quick wee. No one's asking you to eat your lunch there.

Lunaticmess · Yesterday 18:38

ItsAlwaysTwins · 30/09/2026 18:42

I don’t think they are fair comparisons. Of course people should try and minimise the stink if they possibly can.

Agreed. Totally different things. I have a very sensitive gag reflex. Should I request that everyone who uses a public loo please take some spray, because it's just as uncomfortable to find myself puking because of their stench? At the end of the day, it's hardly difficult to take some spray with you to make everybody's life a bit more pleasant.

I have noticed since I had my gallbladder removed, sometimes I get the urge to do a 2 and need to visit asap

ImogenBrocklehurst · Yesterday 18:40

How childish. What an awful woman.

MrsJeanLuc · Yesterday 18:40

I voted YABU for giving two hoots what the silly woman says.

And you are definitely unreasonable for staying in the cubicle for ages when you knew there was a queue!

What, it’s old fashioned to use bleach in toilets now?

What are we supposed to
be using?

Using bleach in a work/public place now is against health and safety rules

My cousin is a loud scouser. I heard her retort in a loo once, "Ahh shurrup. It's a bog. It's going to stink of shit. Get a fookin grip. It's shit, not nuclear waste!"

Keeping it real!
