What would the Left call the Right, if the small boat people were white?

I'll start by saying, I am very anti open boarders, and I am horrified that so many illegal immigrants are arriving every day. But for me, it has absolutely nothing to do with skin colour, it is more to do with :

ONE) They have no documentation, and we have no idea if they have criminal backgrounds

TWO) They tend to come from cultures where women are not respected

THREE) They often come from places where rape is not a crime

FOUR) They cannot work, and it is costing Millions to house, feed and clothe them

FIVE) We are granting asylum to some people who should never get it - like the Hamas bodyguard we heard of yesterday

Lots of valid reasons I feel, however, for me, it has nothing to do with skin colour. If I had to be locked in a room overnight with a white man from a backward culture, or a black man from the UK, I would choose the latter, every single time.

It isn't colour, it's culture

But I see that people on the Far Left just scream "Racist" to anyone who opposes illegal immigration. What would they scream, if all the small boats were full of white men? And would people still march for England?

Actually yes, a society which has discovered electricity and developed the technology to generate it and transport it whilst also developing the technology that makes social media possible is more advanced than a tribe of naked people throwing sharpened bamboo around the jungle by many orders of magnitude. This is so obviously true that I'm not prepared to spend any more time on it, you've lost this one whether you concede the point or not.

Onto why your comparison isn't valid. We have had three decades of mass immigration. Throughout that time we have offered asylum and accepted refugees and in return we've received the Manchester Arena bombings and the Southport murders. We have an acute housing crisis, over-stretched public services and £3trillion of national debt. We have seen appalling numbers of rapes, murders and sexual assaults from men who are now being scattered around the country and placed into our communities in HMOs. Saying enough is enough, after all of that, is in no way similar to an uncivilised tribe killing outsiders who have been unfortunate enough to stumble into their path. Again, this is so obviously true that the continuation of this line of argument only serves to highlight your intellectual dishonesty.

Ok this is what I was asking. so having technology, electricity etc (and western clothes?!) = civilised? All the places refugees are coming from have these things. Cf: the Arab Spring. So why are people here arguing they’re less ‘civilised’ than British people?

Tommy Robinson claims he isn't a racist. Where do you stand on that?

Do you imagine that if you find a single example of someone who is racist but claims not to be, it proves that everyone who claims not to be racist actually is?

Otherwise, what point are you actually trying to make here?

There were tapes on the tube when I was a student in London during the late 80s/early 90s. We were provided with rape alarms and warned against travelling by tube late in the evenings on our own.

It really isn’t a recent thing at all.

Any particular line? Not something I noticed, which brings us back to personal anecdote. My aquaintance didn't notice the hordes leaving for Ceuta, I didn't notice the dead animals in the canals in Egypt that another aquaintance did, but I noticed the sexual harrassment I experienced.

You are hunky dory with the status quo in the UK, but many more are not, and they've had a few decades of not just being ignored but being villified, especially by the party that was ostensibly created to give them a voice.

There are many ways in which one culture can be more civilised than another. Technology is one, but others include treatment of women and LGBT people (as we've already covered, but which you're rather shy of talking about).

Why don't you list all the ways in which you think Afghan culture is more civilised than British culture?

So did Germany.

On a similar note, Singapore and South Korea were both colonised. Both nations are doing rather well.

I could find plenty of other examples. I could perhaps even find examples on this thread but unluckily for me I would be deleted and probably banned if I did that.

What I trying to get to the bottom of is whether a racist claiming not to be racist mean they are not a racist? Because that seemed to be what you are implying.

Where am I supposed to have made any claims about a person's racism being based on that person's claims about their racism? Quote me.

As I’ve said several times I don’t think anyone is ‘more civilised’ than anyone else. Im not shy of discussing it at all - if you remember I tried to discuss the treatment of women/lgbt in more detail and understand what exactly you think defines ‘civilised’ in that context but you refused to engage because I mentioned history.

So you don't think that Britain is more civilised than Afghanistan in our treatment of women and LGBT people.

You don't think that Britain is more civilised than Afghanistan in our treatment of women and LGBT people.

Let the record show that @washingmysocks doesn't think that Britain is more civilised than Afghanistan in our treatment of women and LGBT people.

Ok just to clarify do you think Afghanistan and the UK are pretty much the same for women and girls?

No particular line, it was a general warning to female students not to travel on the tube on your own later in the evening. I recall reading about a rape on the Northern Line (as memory serves anyway).

I was studying in the Wimbledon area - I went to Roehampton. Institute.

We were also warned against walking in Wimbledon Common on our own. Rachel Nickell’s murder took place during my time there.

No of course I don’t. But I don’t think it’s due to some inherent level of ‘civilisation ‘. I think it’s due to an appalling political situation, and I hope we in the UK can use our more privileged circumstances to support the victims of that situation as much as possible.

you’ve misunderstood my argument if you think I’m suggesting the Taliban are not horrific. I’m arguing about why it’s wrong to demonise asylum seekers, if you remember the OP?

That rang a bell with me @LizzieW1969 this might be before the time you mean, though. "The Railway Murderers".

It was your post re British society as a whole that made me question it. We do have many rungs to society from laws, to democracy and freedom of information that create a society that is different to Iran’s.

I don’t get how people say oh we’re bad too or post rape statistics as some rebuttal. It’s entirely obvious a girl is better off here than in Iran or Afghanistan.

When was culture synonymous with "race" (whatever that may be) ?

You do realise we are way beyond understanding racism as merely relating to biological race? Of course cultural racism (or cultural essentialism) - ie. denying a group's humanity or assigning negative behavioural traits based on their culture or nationality - functions the exact same way as traditional biological racism. It reduces millions of diverse individuals to a single, negative stereotype. It assumes that an individual's behavior is entirely predetermined by their origin, stripping them of individual agency.

Attributing the actions of a criminal minority to an entire national or cultural population is the very definition of racism.

Does this really still need explaining in 2026?

assigning negative behavioural traits based on their culture

So it's not possible to state that one CULTURE is better than another without it being "racist"?!

Since you can’t define what you mean by civilised or seem to understand the difference between a culture and a political system then no, it’s not possible to debate this further.
