AIBU to refuse the back seat when giving my MIL a lift?

MIL expects lifts . Fair enough dh obliges.

Sometimes I’m with him as while she’s in an appt we get other jobs done/shopping etc

Turned up today and she ordered me into the back seat ! I said no - if you want a lift get in if not book an uber.
The seats are on the same level, just as accessible and the same leg room ( im petite so have the seat pulled forward so back seat has lots of space).
She went mad started shouting at me ! To have some respect and move. Called me a ‘rude disrespectful little bitch’.

Dh has then told her to sort out a taxi he’s not having her speak to me that way.

She has phoned repeatedly (we ignored)
Shes messaged to say she missed her hospital appt because of me !!!

AIBU to think she should have just sat in the back ?!!

My MIL is an absolute nightmare but she would never do this - the bloody cheek of it 😂

Gresley · 29/09/2026 19:50

You all talk as if it's understood that an old person should be offered the front seat. But I've never heard of it, so maybe the OP hadn't either. Am curious to know why I should be offered a front seat if e.g. nephew's legs are much longer and wouldn't be offended if I wasn't.

For all those saying you give up your seat to someone older what if you are giving both MIL & FIL a lift who would get priority?
I did use to get in the back when we had a smaller car but now that the seats are equal i don't.

MIL always! Always women in the front (unless only the man is elderly/ has a disability etc) - or any scenario where one position is easier to get in and out of.

An ‘old’ person, who is obviously less agile should of course be offered the most accessible seat (that goes for public transport too, but that’s another story) but 60 is not old, it’s working age. I have adult DC nearing 60!

They were brought up, as my DGC were, to be aware that old people are often frailer and less mobile. Hence the need in some situations, small, two door cars for instance, to have them sit in the front.

I always offer to sit in the back when offering my in-laws or my parents (or anyone older) a lift.

Always assumed it was the done thing.

How can you sit in the back if giving someone a lift?

Ladybarnaby · 30/09/2026 10:21

Honestly just let the silly woman sit in the front. Btw you were both rude.
I’m 63 years old and went through the same thing. MIL died recently and this sort of nonsense soon becomes irrelevant.

CitrusBlossom · 30/09/2026 10:29

PP saying they always respect their elders by giving them the front seat, well so do I, but I draw the line when they’re a cunt.

Sounds like MIL in this situation has always been awful and doesn’t deserve respect, elder or not. People earn respect, they don’t demand it.

The same way the OP was "hosting" her MIL despite not being the driver I assume

The MIL might be rude and entitled (though I actually think, as I said above, that's it's polite to offer your elders the front seat) but she is not part of a woman's anatomy. It's not edgy or cool to use that words so kindly desist.

(disclaimer - if you get car sick, you might need the front seat).

Please don’t, this is @Frontseat thread not yours .

GillyGillyOssenfeffa · 30/09/2026 16:57

@Frontseat Some statistics to ponder on. Historically (i.e. for cars designed before 2007)the back seat was 30% safer than the front passenger seat!
However, a study on cars manufactured between 2007 and 2016 found it was between 45% and 65% more dangerous to sit in the back seat.
Older occupants (typically age 71 and above) face a sharply escalated mortality risk regardless of whether they sit in the front or the back.
I let my M-i-L sit in the front, but maybe I shouldn't......
Anyone who used the words "little bitch" to me would be walking home.

Yeah, we don't police language on MN. Posters are free to use whatever words they want.

Do you seriously not see that lying to get resources that somebody else needs more than you is disrespectful to the person who misses out?

Laws are made to make it possible for people live with each other without chaos and strife. To ensure that people are able to keep their own property, to access resources fairly. When you act illegally you disrespect everybody that obeys the law, that shows restraint so that there can be fairness, consistency, order, peace and stability.

Given that I could rent a council flat and live there while owning and renting out several other properties, I think that's the least of people's concerns about housing. My mum.lying about kicking me out is not why there is a 10 year waiting list for a shack.

@Lexibletheflexible
I would start reporting these personal attacks in your shoes.
It’s a good idea in future to name change for any threads you start or posts you make that have highly personal information that can be weaponised against you to score points in completely irrelevant threads by certain less than ethical posters that seem to find it entertaining.

Oh definitely not. I will never do that. If the moderators are fine with their userbase operating in that way, then let's let it happen for all to see.

And it's a shame that she now works with prisoners/ex prisoners. I hate to think what example she is showing them of how to be a contributing member of society

Yes by owning a business, homes and a long term marriage. Terrible example.

Gobbledegoo · 30/09/2026 17:47

She's the "ol bitch". I'm a real oldie and love sitting in the back. Feet stretched out, head back with eyes closed, or not maybe! Hardly ever do that. I have a friend who always drives, so when she comes to us and DH is driving I sit in the back as she never otherwise gets to sit next to the driver.

Pretendbafta · 29/09/2026 15:04

My temporary council place I did not because it was a ridiculous amount a week and nobody paid it in full as it wasn't "fair rent" or whatever you call it so I got some HB. T

this was defrauding the tax payer.

and you were likely depriving one of the released prisoners who genuinely did not have a loving family to live with

Edited

How is it defrauding the taxpayer when you have to declare your income and that is how they work out how much HB you are entitled to?

In temp.accomodation, the 1 bed I had cost something like 285pw in early 2000s (half went toLL, half to the council for housing you). They won't let you pay all of that money for a 1 bed so you get means tested HB to help. I think I paid 110pw out of my own pocket as I was earning. When I went to a permanent council house that cost less than 100pw, I didn't get HB.

You can tell you are totally unfamiliar with these systems

AudHvamm · 29/09/2026 15:24

Do you think your parents "rules" about manners and respect for elders has anything to do with the fact their behaviour is abusive and they were unlikely to ever earn your respect?

No I think it's because they didn't want rude, ignorant children who spoke to people , including them, like shit. That is why they've always insisted on impeccable manners and respect for elders.

Be glad you don’t live in Scotland, Wales or NI then as slapping the shit out of your children is against the law.

I doubt anyone would be that bothered tbh.

I agree with you in that she shouldn't expect to sit in the front, but it sounds like you could have said it in a nicer way.

Did you miss the part where the mil called op a disrespectful little bitch? 🙄
