AIBU to refuse the back seat when giving my MIL a lift?

MIL expects lifts . Fair enough dh obliges.

Sometimes I’m with him as while she’s in an appt we get other jobs done/shopping etc

Turned up today and she ordered me into the back seat ! I said no - if you want a lift get in if not book an uber.
The seats are on the same level, just as accessible and the same leg room ( im petite so have the seat pulled forward so back seat has lots of space).
She went mad started shouting at me ! To have some respect and move. Called me a ‘rude disrespectful little bitch’.

Dh has then told her to sort out a taxi he’s not having her speak to me that way.

She has phoned repeatedly (we ignored)
Shes messaged to say she missed her hospital appt because of me !!!

AIBU to think she should have just sat in the back ?!!

But MIL hasn't cultivated the type of relationship with her DIL where DIL would anticipate her needs.

Respect begets respect, and MIL has said some nasty things to OP over the years.

Everyone has their limit, and OP has reached hers.

Perhaps the Mil's limit has been reached?

Lexibletheflexible · 29/09/2026 13:37

Yep, but she'd slap the shit out of me if I didn't get up for an older person. So basically, even the ex prisoner who got a fraudulent council flat would never expect her MIL to sit in the back, so anyone who would should be doubly ashamed of themselves.

Are you being serious or exaggerating about your mother here @Lexibletheflexible ?

Why?

Because that poster has been saying that those that don’t offer the front seat were not raised right.

Thay doesn’t strike you as being somewhat… OTT (and astonishingly hypocritical)

It's ironic that these posters think OP is making a mountain out of a molehill by objecting to being called 'a rude, disrespectful little bitch' but want to report your posts for simply repeating facts.

I don't think someone who advocates slapping the shit out of their kid for not doing what they expect them to can lecture others on manners.

Your contributions on this thread have been absolutely bizarre.

Maybe the type of parents who would slap the shit out of their adult kid for not showing manners is more of what we need in this society.

How often do you go on daytime weekday trips with your DH for your MIL medical appointments, when you say you work?

Why do you need to do shopping with him on those days? Honestly, seems a bit off.

I suspect the MIL never sees her DS on his own anymore and probably resents you coming along…..but it’s manifested into a front-seat standoff situation.

Really you should have offered the front seat, as it’s polite but now with this argument, that’s all gone out the window.

She needs to apologise and your DH, if he is happy to take her to medical apts, needs to do this on his own without you tacking on a shopping trip.

Yes, this is what I was referring to when I posted about not always defaulting to thinking this is about you, which is what humans naturally do.

It's more the advanced searching my username and then hunting me down in more than one thread that is concerning.

Violence is not the answer to anything, especially not child abuse.

Idk. She's never hit me. If she was going to, it would be for something like not showing basic manners or otherwise being a cunt.

So when's the last time your MIL called you a ‘rude disrespectful little bitch’?

If I was acting rude and disrespectful, which id say OP has, and if that happened repeatedly then it’s not surprising. They’re as bad as each other.

There is no suggestion she has AS your name or hunted you down.

Some MNers have great memories and can recall a thread and username pretty easily.

MIL was rude and disrespectful for ordering OP to the back of the car.

I don't see how this is 'irony'- in what way?

It's great that PP did this because it shows your hypocrisy. You are presenting yourself as the arbiter of good manners and are arguing strenously and haughtily with other posters to the point that it's derailing the thread.

You have form for this on other threads, to the point that I stop reading the thread out of irritation and boredom.

By what? Telling OP she has stolen her son and that her cooking is bad?

That user has already done it on another thread. It's pretty obvious. You know like when someone likes a really old FB post of yours and you know they've been scrolling through your profile.

Maybe I'm just wary after this:

To be fair… you have a recent and very active AMA about being on prison

Because you expect OP to accept bad behaviour but can’t even tolerate a poster repeating a fact here.

Do you not have an active thread then?

diddl · 29/09/2026 14:38

Older people were young at a time when age did afford a person respect and consideration, so will have spent their own younger years making way for the older generation, thinking their own turn would come.

I'm of that age.

But I don't think that just because I had to do it as a kid they should have to do it for me.

I think kids deserve consideration as well.

MyDeftDuck · 29/09/2026 14:38

I’m with you OP……NO ONE would demand that I sit in the back seat! And your DH was right to back you up too!

Indeed. Bringing it up in multiple threads and/or asking questions about that in totally unrelated threads is just weird, though.

It would be like me advanced searching to see if they are divorced or unemployed to challenge their views on whether all dogs should be on leads.

nomas · 29/09/2026 14:37

Yes I do. So it makes no sense to try and bring up my past and ask questions about it in other places.
