AIBU to think leaving a WhatsApp activity group without a word is rude?

Aibu to think it's rude when people leave activity groups that they were welcomed into. (What's App) Without saying anything?

We welcomed two people they were friends to an activity, made them welcome and they said they enjoyed it and would come back and looked forward to it.

Fast forward a while we have not seen them or heard at all. Today I noticed they've both left the group, one and then the other followed shortly after.

Can't they just say thanks for welcoming us or nice to meet you, but we are unable to attend anymore and then leave.

People are so bloody rude.

It would finish it off much better if they communicated and you'd think much more of them.
Makes you wonder why you bother?
Perhaps when they attended we should have been rude and unwelcoming instead of friendly.

Did you ask them if they wanted to be invited to the group?

I hate it when people just add me to a random group then other people can see my contact details

Maddy70 · 22/09/2026 17:28

It's a WhatsApp group !

IHaveAFeelingWeAreNotInKansasAnymore · 22/09/2026 17:29

I dont think its rude.

It would have been weirder for them to make a big announcement about leaving when everyone barely knows them.

Did they ask to be added?

girlfriend44 · 22/09/2026 17:29

Yes. Somebody asked them. It's the type of group that the activity is arranged on there only so you wouldn't know what was going on if you didn't join anyway.

Some people are so rude and blunt despite saying they enjoyed themselves

Whisperwaves · 22/09/2026 17:32

Perhaps they just decided it wasn't for them.

It's weird to be nice your saying?
What kind of world are we living in then?

We had a great time and look forward to the next time they both said individually after the activity, then just left.
How about we can't make it anymore or similar but it was nice to meet you or similar.

OneShyPeachShark · 22/09/2026 17:32

Geez. I think I can see why they just quietly left.

Obviously, but can't they say anything?

You said what I was thinking 🤣

XenoBitch · 22/09/2026 17:35

Whatsapp is not an airport. No need to announce a departure.
This is why I only use it for exchanging photos with DM, and one hobby group.
Too much drama on there. Many a thread on here about it.

CleverlyBeery · 22/09/2026 17:36

If 2 people left a group of 4 - yes, would have been decent to say goodbye.
If they left a group of 12, 20, 120 then no need.

YourAmberExpert · 22/09/2026 17:37

Non issue

MrsLFii · 22/09/2026 17:38

I just don’t think it matters this much op. It’s not rude, it’s just a different way to how you’d do it. Calling it rude is a bit over the top.

No, I didnt say that its weird to be nice.

Its weird for 2 virtual strangers to make an announcement about leaving a group they dont feel like they fit into for whatever reason.

Probably best they didnt say anything given your clear tendency for dramatics.

I joined a yoga group - to do yoga. But fuck me the messages on the WhatsApp group were too much.

So I left the classes and the group. I didn’t message because I didn’t want to tell her the truth which would have been.

Hi Louise, I won’t be attending more sessions because it’s just not for me. Your client base are a good 15-20 years older than me and I can not cope with the barrage of WhatsApp messages that come through hourly. I couldn’t give a fuck that Sue is running late to class. I don’t care one jot that Anne’s knee is giving her gip, but she’ll try her best, or that the ring road has temporary traffic lights. I do not want to come to the curry night, I don’t want to know what 18 people are ordering for said curry, I don’t want to see the pictures of the curry night.

I just wanted to do yoga - the WhatsApp group ruined it for me.

waterrat · 22/09/2026 17:41

A life lesson i have learnt is the joy of just leaving and deleting whatsapp groups I dont find useful

It's absolutely not required etiquette to say goodbye and why on earth do you care

SoThatsTheWayItIs · 22/09/2026 17:41

Non issue. I mean really these are virtual strangers that tried a hobby group and then decided it wasn't for them. I didn't message a yoga teacher or a exercise class leader after a couple of tries and deciding it wasn't for me. I just decided to not go back. No big deal.

Pinkgin00 · 22/09/2026 17:43

It sound like they were only added briefly and decided it wasn't for them, so i don't see any harm in them just leaving quietly. In this scenario I don't think it is that rude to be honest.

It wasn't a chat group . It was a group where people arranged an activity. Times, dates etc.
Someone else did leave in the past, they did say something though . I guess it depends on the person. Yes I think some people are abit rude but hey ho.

Ellie1015 · 22/09/2026 17:44

I say goodbye on chats before I leave if I have been there a while eg dd changed sports team I had stood with these parents for years. Said goodbye and wished team well going forward etc.

If it is a short time I would think saying goodbye is a bit ott and just leave.

This group was not like that for info.

This is the whatsapp group version of but I'm a Nice Guy'! OP given your over reaction to their perceived rudeness I think it's clear why they made a French exit. They made all the polite noises people make when something, or someone, isn't right for them but it would be inappropriate to say so. They discreetly left the group, so quietly that it wasn't even noticed. They're people you barely know who briefly joined an activity and left in the least dramatic and least offensive way possible. They weren't rude.

Perhaps they felt under pressure with direct questioning and were just saying something to be polite.

Exactly how I feel about each and every "hobby" whatsapp group. Take your group, your activity and your metaphorical curry and stick it up your backside. Would you feel more comfortable if we said that, OP? Or do you expect us to lie to be pleasant? Or is it better for everyone if we just quietly remove ourselves?

XenoBitch · 22/09/2026 17:46

Is their departure now being discussed in the group?
