AIBU to think leaving a WhatsApp activity group without a word is rude?

Aibu to think it's rude when people leave activity groups that they were welcomed into. (What's App) Without saying anything?

We welcomed two people they were friends to an activity, made them welcome and they said they enjoyed it and would come back and looked forward to it.

Fast forward a while we have not seen them or heard at all. Today I noticed they've both left the group, one and then the other followed shortly after.

Can't they just say thanks for welcoming us or nice to meet you, but we are unable to attend anymore and then leave.

People are so bloody rude.

It would finish it off much better if they communicated and you'd think much more of them.
Makes you wonder why you bother?
Perhaps when they attended we should have been rude and unwelcoming instead of friendly.

Is there anything worst than someone having to declare

I am leaving the group now, look at me, I am leaving!

Please no. We all have too many whatsapp groups, kids, work, clubs.. we don't need to be spammed by the attention seeking "I am leaving".
No one cares Linda. If we are close enough, you will have told me privately and I'd already know anyway. If not, I don't know you and I don't care.

Exactly. Social Cowardice. You dont have to make an announcement to everyone, you can always send a message to admin to be polite.
They expressed an interest in coming after all and said see you again. Social Cowardice.

"Social cowardice" is ridiculous OP.

You're massively overreacting; when people post in a group to say they're leaving it can be met with equal and opposite judgement. Perhaps they didn't feel welcome or included, and thus didn't feel they'd be missed? You say yourself it's not a chatty group, and is simply used for making arrangements - has it occurred to you that perhaps they felt awkward or uncomfortable about posting something that wasn't arrangements and might be disruptive? You're only interested in your own perspective and completely unwilling to consider people may feel differently to you without being wrong. I'd leave your group too.

theneighbourgotmycake · 23/09/2026 15:20

"Social Cowardice."

It's not. It's knowing how to use whatsapp groups, it's not a personal blog.

pimplebum · 23/09/2026 15:27

Some people are so rude and blunt despite saying they enjoyed themselves

so what would you prefer???

a) “I did not like you, or the vibe of the group i wont be back “ to your face

b) silently leave what-app grouo

i know what one i prefer

Seziah · 23/09/2026 15:34

It’s not social cowardice, it’s just being polite.

More than once I’ve been to one group or class and at the end people are asking “how did you find it?” “Do you think you’ll come back?” “Shall I add you to the WhatsApp group?”. It’s just polite to say it was great and agree, rather than saying I didn’t like XYZ, I won’t be back, I don’t want to join the group chat, I liked another class better etc.

I would be surprised if anyone other than you noticed that they left the group and I bet no one would reply if they actually had announced their departure. Being kind and welcoming to new members who might never come back is part of being in a group. It’s not going above and beyond, and they aren’t rude for not making a big deal of not coming back

Empress13 · 23/09/2026 15:39

Maybe they were embarrassed to openly admit it wasn’t for them and decided to exit quietly without the rest of you piling in on them asking why

FreddysFingers · 23/09/2026 17:21

God no, it wouldn't bother me if people decided to exit a WhatsApp group. They're not beholden to the group and certainly don't owe an explanation to people about why they're exiting the chat.

Itsjustgonenoonhalfpastmonsoon · 23/09/2026 17:34

I suppose they could have just muted the notifications but they probably thought their departure wouldn’t matter. It does depend on how large the group is.

girlfriend44 · 22/09/2026 17:32

Obviously, but can't they say anything?

Some people don't want to attract attention to themselves, especially not leaving a WA group which would then risk having a torrent of messages about why they're going (they have no way of knowing how people will respond). The best thing to do is slip off quietly.

perhaps you need to get behind the idea that not everyone thinks or acts like you and there's nothing wrong with that. I'm sure they're very nice people.

This group was not like that for info.

So if it wasn't a chat group and purely to arrange the activity then perhaps they felt uncomfortable messaging since people don't chat. Tbh the information you needed was gleaned from the fact they left. Sounds like you just wanted them to fawn over how "welcoming" you are.

Good lord. I think they dodged a bullet there.

It's never crossed my mind to find out who the admin of a WhatsApp group is let alone message them about permission to leave the WhatsApp group.

Portmore · 23/09/2026 18:30

Has OP left the chat ?Hmm

Still makes no sense to keep junk on my phone I don't even want...!?

Well it's easier to keep it than worry about it and spend time deleting it.
I don't delete spam emails any more, I just ignore them.

You said what I was thinking 🤣

Same 🤭

Sartre · 24/09/2026 10:25

Why are you so butthurt over this exactly? They thought they wanted to be part of the group but realised it wasn’t for them so left. They didn’t need to send a full blown apology or explanation for this, they don’t owe you anything.

I hate WhatsApp groups and leave or mute them all.

Yes it is rude. If it bothers you though just message and ask about it.

Don’t do this unless you are utterly nuts.

OP seems bothered by it so that's the only way to find out.

backformoreofthesame · 24/09/2026 10:47

have you have failed to notice the posts that have made that person so upset that they just don’t want to engage any more ? They don’t want to get into a debate about why they felt hurt and why you think they are being over sensitive
