AIBU to think leaving a WhatsApp activity group without a word is rude?

Aibu to think it's rude when people leave activity groups that they were welcomed into. (What's App) Without saying anything?

We welcomed two people they were friends to an activity, made them welcome and they said they enjoyed it and would come back and looked forward to it.

Fast forward a while we have not seen them or heard at all. Today I noticed they've both left the group, one and then the other followed shortly after.

Can't they just say thanks for welcoming us or nice to meet you, but we are unable to attend anymore and then leave.

People are so bloody rude.

It would finish it off much better if they communicated and you'd think much more of them.
Makes you wonder why you bother?
Perhaps when they attended we should have been rude and unwelcoming instead of friendly.

Wonder where the expectation to announce comes from, are they or you called Elvis 😂?

It wasn't a chat group . It was a group where people arranged an activity. Times, dates etc.
Someone else did leave in the past, they did say something though . I guess it depends on the person. Yes I think some people are abit rude but hey ho.

I think its rude to leave anywhere without saying goodbye. However not everyone thinks like me. I think it's weird to start a thread on a public forum about leaving a WhatsApp group. We're all different

Exactly. Social Cowardice. You dont have to make an announcement to everyone, you can always send a message to admin to be polite.
They expressed an interest in coming after all and said see you again. Social Cowardice.

On WhatsApp you just click the leave group button and it notifies admin that you’ve left. They aren’t owed an explanation.

And what are you going to say that lands positively?! It's like when you're asked why you're unubscribing from Netflix etc, well it's because I don't want to be subscribed. Reason for leaving this Whatsapp group, I don't want to be in this Whatsapp group!

I get why it can feel a bit off, especially if you've made an effort to include someone.

I was once added to a WhatsApp group for a friend's birthday and friend's then boyfriend was invited (obviously) we all knew him but he was a shit and didn't help or contribute whatsoever to the party. The day after everyone was posting saying thank you to the organiser and they'd had a lovely time, very clear the group was wrapping up. Boyfriend meanwhile just exited without a word and yeah everyone thought that was incredibly rude.

Just an update. Thus happened in the last day or two. Actually had a member who had never been to the activity but joined the group thinking that she might

She out a message you saying she was leaving as she wouldn't be able to attend . She said she thought she'd let us know even though she hadn't managed to attend

So there you are. What a nice person. This is exactly what I meant . Very impressive.

It's all down to the individual person.

I don’t think it makes anyone any ‘nicer’ to tell the members of an event-specific WhatsApp group that they’re leaving.

Did you ask them if they wanted to be invited to the group?

I hate it when people just add me to a random group then other people can see my contact details

Haven't rtft but do you know you can turn off this ability? There's a setting to prevent people from being able to add you to groups. They can send a link and then you decide whether to join. Game changer.

To you it's nicer. To many people on this thread it's unnecessary extra phone chatter to receive, amongst the family, friends, school, work, chats. To many others on the thread it's an unnecessary rejection (yes, obviously a very small one but I'm ok with someone not spelling out to me that they don't want to spend time with me after all!).
This isn't a universally Nice Thing to do.

Not sure why you posted in AIBU, you clearly think you are not.

Given the fuss you've made over it, I can understand why they left quietly with no drama.

  1. I really doubt people are bothered about this update, because it is irrelevant, you might as well have told everyone that Sandra had sausages for tea
  2. Did knowing she was leaving change anything at all? She still left
  3. Why do people leave so much…that’s what I would really want to know. It doesn’t sound good

Dodged a bullet there.

But the key element is whether Sandra came on WhatsApp to tell everyone she had sausages for tea. This makes her 'nice'.
