AIBU to think timing and charging for my showers is excessive?

I know this is going to sound completely ridiculous and I am aware that I probably need to grow a backbone, but I'm genuinely upset and don't know whether I'm being unreasonable.

I'm 37F and my sister, "Karen", is 41F. We're very different people. She's quite a big, loud woman and has always been very confident and outspoken. I'm small and quiet and tend to avoid confrontation. She says I'm "too sensitive", which is probably true.

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat. I am very grateful because she has a spare room and I don't really want to stay in a hotel.
The problem is her hot water.

Karen is extremely careful with money. She has a combi boiler and apparently has worked out exactly how much a shower costs. When I arrived she told me that showers were limited to five minutes and that I should "think of the meter".

I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

There is now a little kitchen timer outside the bathroom. She says I'm supposed to set it before getting in the shower.

The first morning I was here I took about seven minutes because I'd washed my hair. She knocked on the door at five minutes and said, "That's your five."

I said, "Sorry, I've just got shampoo in my hair."

She said, "Well, you've had your warning."

I thought this was incredibly strange but didn't say anything.

She then told me I'd used 7p worth of hot water and asked me for 10p.

I laughed because I assumed she was joking.

She just looked at me and said, "It's not free."

I gave her the 10p.

Since then she's been keeping track. She has a notebook on the kitchen worktop with everyone's shower times written down. Mine says:
Monday – 6 mins – 12p
Tuesday – 4 mins – 8p
Wednesday – 8 mins – 16p

I asked why Wednesday was 16p and she said I'd "had the water running unnecessarily".

I honestly don't know how she knows this.

Yesterday I had a shower before work and she knocked after five minutes.

I said, "I'm nearly finished."

She said, "You're always nearly finished."

I got out.

Later she told me that she'd calculated I'd used an additional 11p of gas and that she thought it was "only fair" that I contributed £1 towards the week's hot water.

I gave it to her because I couldn't think of what else to do.
This morning I got up early because I thought I could have a shower before she woke up.

Apparently she has changed the boiler settings so that the hot water doesn't come on until 6.30am.

I turned the tap on at 6.15 and it was cold.

I texted her asking if there was something wrong with the boiler and she replied:

"No. It's 6.15. We've discussed this."

I hadn't realised we'd discussed it.

The really humiliating thing is that yesterday I went into town and bought a coffee. When I came home she said, "You can afford a £4.20 coffee but apparently you can't afford your share of the gas."

I said the coffee wasn't really relevant.

She said, "Everything's relevant when you're living in someone else's house."

I went upstairs and cried.

I know objectively that this sounds pathetic. We're talking about pennies. I can afford to pay for the water. It's not the money.

It's the fact that I feel like I'm being monitored constantly.
I now feel anxious every time I turn on a tap. I've started brushing my teeth with the bathroom door closed because I don't want her commenting on how long the water was running.

Last night she actually shouted upstairs:

"Are you having a bath?"

I wasn't. I'd dropped something in the sink.

I said no.

She said, "Good, because that's not happening."

I am beginning to dread being here. I don't want anyone to tell me to just leave because unfortunately it's not that simple and I don't have another option immediately available.

Karen says I'm being dramatic and that I'm "acting like she's withholding food".

She says I'm lucky she lets me stay here and that if I don't like her rules I can pay for a hotel. I do appreciate that it's her house. I really do.

But AIBU to think charging your sister 10p for a shower and keeping a notebook of her shower times is a bit excessive?

Well, what to think... a strange tale indeed.
You could insist on paying a contribution to additional household expense you are causing. Not sure why you take so long in the shower or run the tap when brushing your teeth from an environmental point of view. Don't like that you chose to name her Karen with its misogynistic connotations. I presume you're joking about crisp £100 notes as there's no such thing. However, she is being weird and cranky so maybe move out?

CrazyMidget · 21/09/2026 22:04

She’s counting up 11p and 7p etc? Instead of just agreeing a monthly amount for bills, like any normal person? Karen has mental-health troubles.

Still, it’s a huge saving on a hotel. Do you belong to a gym? Can you shower there more often? Or can you join one - preferably one with a whirlpool? Then you can have a nice long soak or shower in peace. And you’ll be out of her way more. And don’t tell her you’ve joined a gym or she’ll be on about if you can afford that then you can pay me X! With people like Karen, the less they know, the better.

If you can’t join a gym, can you go for a weekend at a hotel just to have a break and shower in peace? In extremis, there’s a website called Hotels by Day and you can get day rates at well-known brand-name hotels. Or it might be Day Use dot com. A cheaper way for you to get a break from her and have a bloody shower in peace!!!!

Also might not hurt to add a little charm to the situation by taking her out for a nice meal…

StillgotmyiPod · 21/09/2026 22:04

Yes she's being uptight but she's also letting you stay for free for weeks, so on balance I wouldn't complain.

Just give her the cash as you say, and tell her "I don't want this to be a source of contention between us. I don't want my showers to be timed so I am going to pay you £X per week upfront to cover the extra gas so you're not out of pocket. I hope this means we can move forward without either of us bringing it up again."

DuchessOf · 21/09/2026 21:52

Yes. I told her I would be happy to buy all her food for the time I'm staying, in addition to £100 a week for the hassle. DS responded that wouldn't be necessary.

I will take the advice from PPs and leave her a crisp £100 note each Sunday evening to cover my "rent" for the week.

Make sure to note rent and extra utilities! 🤔

Give her 50 quid and tell her not to mention your hot water consumption again.

This

She sounds like a right arsehole

Porcupinepotato · 21/09/2026 22:08

For starters a combi boiler provides hot water on demand when it’s turned on. The timer is only for the heating, not water. I’m guessing she has turned the boiler off until the time she decides hot water is available

MrsMoastyToasty · 21/09/2026 22:09

Find out how much a cubic metre (1000 litres) of water costs in her water supply area.
A 5 minute power shower uses less than 100 litres.
Pay her for 100 litres. It will be minimal. About 40p to 50p pet shower.

ErrolTheDragon · 21/09/2026 22:09

Obviously cover expenses and then some, but I think this is more about her wanting you to be in no doubt it’s her house and she’s in control.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 21/09/2026 22:09

Definitely agree with other posters and give her money up front to cover future showers. Is the issue just showers or also other stuff, if only showers it sounds like something has caused her to become worried and a bit obsessive (read something/ heard something etc)

Ifeeltheneedtheneedforcoffee · 21/09/2026 22:10

I would pay her the rent and then give her the shower money exactly in shiny 1ps so she has a whole load of them

Maybe she can spend it at the penny falls and put a smile on her face!
It sounds so petty but you may just have to sack it up im afraid

JaceLancs · 21/09/2026 22:11

Im totally in the give her £50 a week and ask her if that will allow you unlimited bathing facilities

Loub1987 · 21/09/2026 22:13

Stay in an air BnB this isn’t worth it

Barney16 · 21/09/2026 22:15

I would give her £10 and have a couple of really long baths. I would then buy her bath foam or shower gel for every birthday and Christmas forever.

HonorBound · 21/09/2026 22:15

Just go to the leisure center for a swim and have a shower afterwards

or wet yourself and turn the water off, the washing your hair, lather yourself up - then rinse. Then ask for a refund for the time off in the middle 😉😉

DuchessOf · 21/09/2026 21:57

The odd thing is she's probably more well off than anyone else in the family! She got a big payout many years ago - I'm talking over £200,000 - from a harassment case at work and used that to pay off her house. She still works but if you don't have a mortgage, kids, partner, pets... what could you possibly be spending it on? She doesn't travel and her hobbies are all home based and cheap.

But that’s none of your business OP tbh.
She does sound v over the top but it’s her home at the end of day and you need to either keep your shower to less than 5 mins or speak to her and say you’re going to struggle to do that, can you cover the extra cost please as you don’t want her out of pocket.
essentially you need to live by her rules if you’re staying there as batshit as they might seem!

OrangeFlower14 · 21/09/2026 22:17

What is she like in other ways?

I would just give her some money so you can have a long shower as you want. If cost the issue, then that should be that sorted

She still has to cover her bills, though you say she got a pay off, but she still has to cover bills and pension and everything

3ciLop · 21/09/2026 22:17

Can you afford a cheap hotel?? She sounds mental

Newnamehiwhodis · 21/09/2026 22:19

That would drive me insane- mainly because I feel so suffocated when I feel like people are micromanaging me.

what a controlling misery she is!

Morecoffeeneedef · 21/09/2026 22:24

It's her home and that's the basis on which she's invited you to stay. If you don't like it you can always go somewhere else. But it is quite strange. Presumably she's always been like this?

She's quite uptight. It's been an issue in other relationships. We aren't very close because of it. I was diagnosed many years ago with a neurological condition and may very well end up with dementia in my old age. It really made me change my tune about petty nonsense. Life is too short for it!

OP posts:
Minasama · 21/09/2026 22:25

Your sister sounds as if she has some kind of mental problem. It is beyond stingy to charge a relative 10p for a shower, unless she is really on her uppers. So that leaves that she is anally retentive and controlling.

If you want a coffee that is up to you.

Her behaviour is excessive and controlling. Having a sister to stay should be a great joy, charging you for water is socially unacceptable.

DiscoElysia · 21/09/2026 22:29

It probably isn't about the money. It will be about something else - something that the water use and the monitoring and the noting down means to her.

We all have things we do that help us to feel somehow safer or more in control or more purposeful or whatever. It's just that sometimes these things turn into really restrictive rules that infringe on life's pleasures and damage our relationships. If we are too dependent on those things to be able to flex, there is emotional fallout.

I wonder whether you can be explicit with her. 'I'm happy to pay for the water I've used and more, because I value your kindness and hospitality. So given that I'm paying, am I free to shower as much as I want now? Or is this about more than just the money? Genuinely curious as it seems like it is really getting to you and I want to understand what it means for you.'

Idontpostmuch · 21/09/2026 22:30

BigWig78 · 21/09/2026 20:59

Tbh it’s quite rude you’d go and stay there and not offer to cover costs as a minimum. Sister or not. I hope you got your own food plus paid for household groceries etc.

If you're going to be so horrible and twist the OP's words, you'd be better not posting.

Thegirlwhowent · 21/09/2026 22:30

She's being ridiculous. Might it be less stressful for you if you just give her some money - say £10 or £20 a week - to cover the cost of hot water? You wouldn't feel monitored and she'd make more money that way so should be happy. And she might realize how silly she's been.

Imupforthat · 21/09/2026 22:32

Dear Lord and I thought mine was unhinged! What a sad and miserable way to live and what a mean spirited way to treat your sister.

Screw giving her anything up front. Sounds like there’s more at play and my worry is she’d find another way to be a PITA. If she wants to be that petty two can play at that game. She’d be getting my payment in 1p coins I’d slowly be counting out of a child’s coin purse or I’d be handing over a 10p coin and demanding change

I’d suck it up for now but be planning some equally batshit revenge. She’ll need your help one day.
