AIBU to think timing and charging for my showers is excessive?

I know this is going to sound completely ridiculous and I am aware that I probably need to grow a backbone, but I'm genuinely upset and don't know whether I'm being unreasonable.

I'm 37F and my sister, "Karen", is 41F. We're very different people. She's quite a big, loud woman and has always been very confident and outspoken. I'm small and quiet and tend to avoid confrontation. She says I'm "too sensitive", which is probably true.

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat. I am very grateful because she has a spare room and I don't really want to stay in a hotel.
The problem is her hot water.

Karen is extremely careful with money. She has a combi boiler and apparently has worked out exactly how much a shower costs. When I arrived she told me that showers were limited to five minutes and that I should "think of the meter".

I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

There is now a little kitchen timer outside the bathroom. She says I'm supposed to set it before getting in the shower.

The first morning I was here I took about seven minutes because I'd washed my hair. She knocked on the door at five minutes and said, "That's your five."

I said, "Sorry, I've just got shampoo in my hair."

She said, "Well, you've had your warning."

I thought this was incredibly strange but didn't say anything.

She then told me I'd used 7p worth of hot water and asked me for 10p.

I laughed because I assumed she was joking.

She just looked at me and said, "It's not free."

I gave her the 10p.

Since then she's been keeping track. She has a notebook on the kitchen worktop with everyone's shower times written down. Mine says:
Monday – 6 mins – 12p
Tuesday – 4 mins – 8p
Wednesday – 8 mins – 16p

I asked why Wednesday was 16p and she said I'd "had the water running unnecessarily".

I honestly don't know how she knows this.

Yesterday I had a shower before work and she knocked after five minutes.

I said, "I'm nearly finished."

She said, "You're always nearly finished."

I got out.

Later she told me that she'd calculated I'd used an additional 11p of gas and that she thought it was "only fair" that I contributed £1 towards the week's hot water.

I gave it to her because I couldn't think of what else to do.
This morning I got up early because I thought I could have a shower before she woke up.

Apparently she has changed the boiler settings so that the hot water doesn't come on until 6.30am.

I turned the tap on at 6.15 and it was cold.

I texted her asking if there was something wrong with the boiler and she replied:

"No. It's 6.15. We've discussed this."

I hadn't realised we'd discussed it.

The really humiliating thing is that yesterday I went into town and bought a coffee. When I came home she said, "You can afford a £4.20 coffee but apparently you can't afford your share of the gas."

I said the coffee wasn't really relevant.

She said, "Everything's relevant when you're living in someone else's house."

I went upstairs and cried.

I know objectively that this sounds pathetic. We're talking about pennies. I can afford to pay for the water. It's not the money.

It's the fact that I feel like I'm being monitored constantly.
I now feel anxious every time I turn on a tap. I've started brushing my teeth with the bathroom door closed because I don't want her commenting on how long the water was running.

Last night she actually shouted upstairs:

"Are you having a bath?"

I wasn't. I'd dropped something in the sink.

I said no.

She said, "Good, because that's not happening."

I am beginning to dread being here. I don't want anyone to tell me to just leave because unfortunately it's not that simple and I don't have another option immediately available.

Karen says I'm being dramatic and that I'm "acting like she's withholding food".

She says I'm lucky she lets me stay here and that if I don't like her rules I can pay for a hotel. I do appreciate that it's her house. I really do.

But AIBU to think charging your sister 10p for a shower and keeping a notebook of her shower times is a bit excessive?

Agree with others - chuck her 20 quid and ignore her when she moans or knocks on the door, you have paid for it!

justasmalltownmum · 21/09/2026 21:40

You can get holiday inn with free hot breakfast, all the hot showers you want for £45 around here

Anyahyacinth · 21/09/2026 21:41

speakingofart · 21/09/2026 20:55

Why don’t you just stick in £20 and have done with it? She sounds batshit but if you need to stay there and it’s not for long I’d just give her enough to pay for wallowing in a deep hot bath and laugh about it afterwards!

This ..just pay your way. Your sister sounds worried and frightened about money

Unicornsandprincesses · 21/09/2026 21:42

Put the ball back in your court, power-wise, and give her 20 quid. Tell her you'd like her to keep a running log of your shower minutes and at the end of the stay, refund you to the penny for unused minutes. I bet she will soon stop tracking.

Otherwise, join a cheap gym for the month and go shower there instead. I bet she'll soon find something else to hold over you.

She's being petty and mean. I'm interested to know if she was nice to you when you were kids.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/09/2026 21:42

Offer to come to an agreement over how much money to pay her for staying until you can return to your own place. If you can't do that, then pack up and go to a rental.

Why was the tap running while brushing your teeth?

I think some people do this as my water company keeps telling us not to. I never knew it was a thing.

Why would anyone do this? It is so wasteful.

OnTheBoardwalk · 21/09/2026 21:43

Ok so

how much are you paying it stay there for bills and food? Is she living on a tight budget and seeing the electricity costs going up is the one thing she focuses on rather than the rest of the costs

and ‘Karen’ really? Call me that in my house and your sorry arse would the on the street

Error404FucksNotFound · 21/09/2026 21:45

I would rather pay for the hotel.

Ponderingwindow · 21/09/2026 21:47

Just give her 10 or 20 a week and be done with it. Whatever it will take to get her to stop monitoring your showers and I’m guessing your lamp usage as well

Theunamedcat · 21/09/2026 21:48

My son showers by getting wet turning the shower off then soaping everywhere then shower on and rinse

ImmortalNowBabyDoll · 21/09/2026 21:48

Is it possible she might have obsessive compulsive personality disorder? Whatever it is, she's very controlling and sounds absolutely horrible to live with. I hope she doesn't have children

Dragononawagon · 21/09/2026 21:48

I don’t understand why you haven’t offered a proper financial contribution towards her increased costs?

LizandDerekGoals · 21/09/2026 21:49

You should be paying her anyway.
You shouldnt be running the tap whilst brushing teeth.

id be tenpted to sit her down and say i am concerned about her mental health and i want her to make a doctors appointment because this isn't notmal.

Ohnobackagain · 21/09/2026 21:51

I thought with a combi the water heats up instantly when you turn the tap on and there is no hot tank. That’s what we have. Are you not just paying her an amount per week for your ‘keep’ as it’s a few weeks @DuchessOf ?

SpecialShark · 21/09/2026 21:51

She sounds like my husband, except he's (mostly) joking when he says it.

If this is true and your sister is actually serious, she genuinely sounds a bit nuts.

DuchessOf · 21/09/2026 21:52

thetinsoldier · 21/09/2026 21:24

Are you paying her to stay there for these few weeks?? That’s the important question here.

Yes. I told her I would be happy to buy all her food for the time I'm staying, in addition to £100 a week for the hassle. DS responded that wouldn't be necessary.

I will take the advice from PPs and leave her a crisp £100 note each Sunday evening to cover my "rent" for the week.

Brainstorm23 · 21/09/2026 21:53

I agree with the other posters. Just give her £20 and tell her you've prepaid for your showers.

My mother is like this. She'd happily sit in the dark with the blinds down and no light on. I just turn the light on and tell her I'll give her the money if she's short (she's not short at all!)..

viques · 21/09/2026 21:53

I would buy some masking tape and tape off a pathway through the house so you don’t wear out all the carpets floorboards. I would also buy a distinctive mug to use so you don’t accidentally bring forward the demise of any of her mugs.

She sounds nuts, I am all for economy but this is total “six meals for four out of a two pound chicken” shit.

Duckiewasthefirstniceguy · 21/09/2026 21:54

Give her a tenner and then go wild? I genuinely don’t understand why this is a crying/dread matter. She’s cheap and ridiculous, give her the (very small) amount of money in play and go about your business.

TheFishFish · 21/09/2026 21:56

If you have offered to give her just some money to cover power etc and she refused, I would absolutely laugh in her face about timing your showers. She can't have it both ways.

She just sounds like an utter arsehole enjoying having a little bit of power over her little sister.

DuchessOf · 21/09/2026 21:57

The odd thing is she's probably more well off than anyone else in the family! She got a big payout many years ago - I'm talking over £200,000 - from a harassment case at work and used that to pay off her house. She still works but if you don't have a mortgage, kids, partner, pets... what could you possibly be spending it on? She doesn't travel and her hobbies are all home based and cheap.

With this additional info, which probably should have been in the op, her noting the pennies is extremely strange to say the least!

GlosGirl82 · 21/09/2026 21:58

She is an absolute d*head - give her £10 and tell her that you will bill her everytime she comes to your house and washes her hands with hot water

fashionqueen0123 · 21/09/2026 21:59

I’d say do you want me to ring a therapist or you? She clearly needs to see someone!

If this was my sister I would have told her this isn’t normal and what the hell is going on.

LoftyCoralBird · 21/09/2026 22:01

I’d just give her £5 a day towards bills to ease her situation. Plus pay for own food. Shes shockingly tight but best to give her the benefit of the doubt.
