AIBU to think timing and charging for my showers is excessive?

I know this is going to sound completely ridiculous and I am aware that I probably need to grow a backbone, but I'm genuinely upset and don't know whether I'm being unreasonable.

I'm 37F and my sister, "Karen", is 41F. We're very different people. She's quite a big, loud woman and has always been very confident and outspoken. I'm small and quiet and tend to avoid confrontation. She says I'm "too sensitive", which is probably true.

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat. I am very grateful because she has a spare room and I don't really want to stay in a hotel.
The problem is her hot water.

Karen is extremely careful with money. She has a combi boiler and apparently has worked out exactly how much a shower costs. When I arrived she told me that showers were limited to five minutes and that I should "think of the meter".

I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

There is now a little kitchen timer outside the bathroom. She says I'm supposed to set it before getting in the shower.

The first morning I was here I took about seven minutes because I'd washed my hair. She knocked on the door at five minutes and said, "That's your five."

I said, "Sorry, I've just got shampoo in my hair."

She said, "Well, you've had your warning."

I thought this was incredibly strange but didn't say anything.

She then told me I'd used 7p worth of hot water and asked me for 10p.

I laughed because I assumed she was joking.

She just looked at me and said, "It's not free."

I gave her the 10p.

Since then she's been keeping track. She has a notebook on the kitchen worktop with everyone's shower times written down. Mine says:
Monday – 6 mins – 12p
Tuesday – 4 mins – 8p
Wednesday – 8 mins – 16p

I asked why Wednesday was 16p and she said I'd "had the water running unnecessarily".

I honestly don't know how she knows this.

Yesterday I had a shower before work and she knocked after five minutes.

I said, "I'm nearly finished."

She said, "You're always nearly finished."

I got out.

Later she told me that she'd calculated I'd used an additional 11p of gas and that she thought it was "only fair" that I contributed £1 towards the week's hot water.

I gave it to her because I couldn't think of what else to do.
This morning I got up early because I thought I could have a shower before she woke up.

Apparently she has changed the boiler settings so that the hot water doesn't come on until 6.30am.

I turned the tap on at 6.15 and it was cold.

I texted her asking if there was something wrong with the boiler and she replied:

"No. It's 6.15. We've discussed this."

I hadn't realised we'd discussed it.

The really humiliating thing is that yesterday I went into town and bought a coffee. When I came home she said, "You can afford a £4.20 coffee but apparently you can't afford your share of the gas."

I said the coffee wasn't really relevant.

She said, "Everything's relevant when you're living in someone else's house."

I went upstairs and cried.

I know objectively that this sounds pathetic. We're talking about pennies. I can afford to pay for the water. It's not the money.

It's the fact that I feel like I'm being monitored constantly.
I now feel anxious every time I turn on a tap. I've started brushing my teeth with the bathroom door closed because I don't want her commenting on how long the water was running.

Last night she actually shouted upstairs:

"Are you having a bath?"

I wasn't. I'd dropped something in the sink.

I said no.

She said, "Good, because that's not happening."

I am beginning to dread being here. I don't want anyone to tell me to just leave because unfortunately it's not that simple and I don't have another option immediately available.

Karen says I'm being dramatic and that I'm "acting like she's withholding food".

She says I'm lucky she lets me stay here and that if I don't like her rules I can pay for a hotel. I do appreciate that it's her house. I really do.

But AIBU to think charging your sister 10p for a shower and keeping a notebook of her shower times is a bit excessive?

@2children3dogs
Why on earth did you stay with her in the first place?
I love my sister but I would not want her staying with me for 6 months. She would also not want me staying with her for 6 months.

Not that it matters because nothing excuses this kind of behaviour, but I relocated due to a DV relationship. At the time, I was finding a rental and my sister offered to house me for 6 months to help me save the remaining money I needed for a deposit. I never asked to live there, she offered. I did not need to live with her financially, but the offer was appreciated and at the time we got on well and it seemed very kind and genuine. The agreement was £350 per month and I cooked- terms I was happy with. As above, it turns out I moved from one abusive relationship to another.

I was unable to move sooner than the 6 month mark as after month 2 I was in the process of buying which as you're probably aware takes approx 12-16 weeks. I moved out just shy of 6 months on completion of my home.

She sounds completely insane.

DuchessOf · 24/09/2026 23:00

No, she covers all her own expenses. She is financially well off - and to the previous posters asking how I would know this, she's my sister! She shares this information with me as I am the one named in her will.

OP, did you try suggesting you pay her an amount per long shower, like £5 for 20
minutes?

She clearly loves you, it would annoy me if strangers on the internet called her tight.

I don't think it's tightness that's the problem. The OP is willing to contribute a little. It's the weirdness of the behaviour over the shower and small sums that would creep me out.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 27/09/2026 09:52

YABU for calling her "Karen". You knew what you were doing, stop with the sexist bullshit.

The op says she’s willing to contribute but then it’s willing to consider that there might be council tax issue and she should contribute to that so hard to know whether she really is willing

DuchessOf · 27/09/2026 07:27

I'm still paying council tax on my home, along with my home insurance and my TV license and whatever else I pay!

I am leaving her home early next week and neither of us will be making anything "official". Utter nonsense.

Apologies, think I confused you with someone else who had moved out of their place permanently

Aslana · 03/10/2026 18:39

Sit down with her and work out a contribution to all the utilities you use while staying with her. Clearly you should have done this before to avoid the ridiculous situation you are now in. Be the best guest and offer to contribute to food and domestic chores. Offer to cook and take out for a meal. She is doing you a favour and so don't give her any reason to regret this. Current situation not tolerable!

In five minutes my scalp isn't even wet.

OP it all sounds so miserable. I couldn't live like that. Yes do give her the money every week and be done with it. It would be such a relief to leave

lol I unless you’ve got a layer of cement between your hair and your scalp methinks this isn’t true!

I would personally rather pay for the hotel. I cannot fathom timing how long someone’s in the shower or charging them for it. She is a cow.

JHound · 03/10/2026 19:27

I would find somebody else to stay with. Your sister sounds deranged. 5 minutes for a shower? Including washing your hair?!?

😂

Icalloutai · 03/10/2026 19:56

This is ai generated

Roymondo · 03/10/2026 20:05

Just get a hotel room, move out and enjoy the freedom to take as long as you like in the shower while also enjoying shelling out £100 a night for the privilege. In other words, get a grip...

MammaMumMom · 03/10/2026 20:21

I’d get the hell out of there … she can fuck right off with her penny charging. What a horrible petty person. And i bet she’ll throw it in your face forever , out of the kindness of her heart, she let you stay there in your hour of need. Charge her for mental anguish and GET out!!!!!

JTHOM · 03/10/2026 20:29

A very good suggestion, but make sure you credit it to her account so you have a record of having paid it.

I'm glad to hear you're leaving early next week. It doesn't sound sustainable for a few weeks.

The odd thing is she's probably more well off than anyone else in the family! She got a big payout many years ago - I'm talking over £200,000 - from a harassment case at work and used that to pay off her house. She still works but if you don't have a mortgage, kids, partner, pets... what could you possibly be spending it on? She doesn't travel and her hobbies are all home based and cheap.

No wonder she isnt married/in a relationship..any partner would run from that nonsense immediately! Thankfully no kids b/c they'd surely be messed up w constant monitoring. IDK if its more bizarre to inflict such cheapwad/ocd torture on your own sister or a stranger but either way its abnormal. You've offered a flat rate pay/groceries...it sounds like this is abt something other than the actual tiny amt of money involved. Did she have ocd tendencies growing up? Its certainly not worth crying about but perhaps a sitdown abt this ocd/overbearing/domineering behavior as its plain cuckoo is in order. I wonder how she gets along with coworkers?

Sookie2014 · 04/10/2026 08:34

Omg, WTF, your sister must be so fuckign miserable. The quicker you flat is sort out, the quicker you can move out. This situation is toxic, terrible. Her behaviour is so extreme, I bet she is single. Don’t know anyone who could live with someone like that.

you’re not the one with the problem here, she is. Who did fuck monitors showed time and asks for 10p for a shower??!!!

Beabarb · 04/10/2026 08:39

As others have said bung her a £20, be polite & when you can go home limit contact with her.

Shinyandnew1 · 04/10/2026 08:56

You’re not close and it’s clearly driving her mad. Why is there ‘no other option’ for you to go somewhere else? Why can’t you stay in a travel lodge for a few nights?

If it’s that you don’t want to spend the money, then think how big a favour she is doing for you.

Allog · 04/10/2026 09:36

as she’s such a small minded penny pincher I’d give her £100 a week abd ask her to tell you when it was all spent. Keep her working!

LouisCypher · 04/10/2026 10:35

Suggest to her that rather than pay after each shower, she should keep a running total and invoice you at the end of your stay, which you will pay only after the bill is forensically audited. Make sure you keep a serious face when you tell her.

QueenFnaaaaaaar · 04/10/2026 21:45

My sister was/is exactly the same. Charged me when I was visiting and visiting friends for baths except those who were in a band.

I shared a flat with her for 18months and ran as far away as I could (170 miles). She disputed shared costs and wouldn't pay what was owed to me.

I tried very hard to like /get on with her. Ended up breaking all ties. My children didn't know I had a sister. However dealt with family issues together in a professional manner. Went to sort out my mum's funeral in Italy and lost it with her when an airline strike meant we had to stay 3 days longer than planned.

I just felt so relieved to have her out of my life. Turns out she's autistic (diagnosed at 60).

Just stay as long as you have to and have the relationship with her that doesn't cost you alone.

I wish you luck.

stymaster · 05/10/2026 13:07

How totally deranged. I wouldn't dream of charging a guest like that.

The next time she mentions it, give her a tenner, tell her it's to cover all the terrible expense. And tell her to fuck off.
