AIBU to think timing and charging for my showers is excessive?

I know this is going to sound completely ridiculous and I am aware that I probably need to grow a backbone, but I'm genuinely upset and don't know whether I'm being unreasonable.

I'm 37F and my sister, "Karen", is 41F. We're very different people. She's quite a big, loud woman and has always been very confident and outspoken. I'm small and quiet and tend to avoid confrontation. She says I'm "too sensitive", which is probably true.

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat. I am very grateful because she has a spare room and I don't really want to stay in a hotel.
The problem is her hot water.

Karen is extremely careful with money. She has a combi boiler and apparently has worked out exactly how much a shower costs. When I arrived she told me that showers were limited to five minutes and that I should "think of the meter".

I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

There is now a little kitchen timer outside the bathroom. She says I'm supposed to set it before getting in the shower.

The first morning I was here I took about seven minutes because I'd washed my hair. She knocked on the door at five minutes and said, "That's your five."

I said, "Sorry, I've just got shampoo in my hair."

She said, "Well, you've had your warning."

I thought this was incredibly strange but didn't say anything.

She then told me I'd used 7p worth of hot water and asked me for 10p.

I laughed because I assumed she was joking.

She just looked at me and said, "It's not free."

I gave her the 10p.

Since then she's been keeping track. She has a notebook on the kitchen worktop with everyone's shower times written down. Mine says:
Monday – 6 mins – 12p
Tuesday – 4 mins – 8p
Wednesday – 8 mins – 16p

I asked why Wednesday was 16p and she said I'd "had the water running unnecessarily".

I honestly don't know how she knows this.

Yesterday I had a shower before work and she knocked after five minutes.

I said, "I'm nearly finished."

She said, "You're always nearly finished."

I got out.

Later she told me that she'd calculated I'd used an additional 11p of gas and that she thought it was "only fair" that I contributed £1 towards the week's hot water.

I gave it to her because I couldn't think of what else to do.
This morning I got up early because I thought I could have a shower before she woke up.

Apparently she has changed the boiler settings so that the hot water doesn't come on until 6.30am.

I turned the tap on at 6.15 and it was cold.

I texted her asking if there was something wrong with the boiler and she replied:

"No. It's 6.15. We've discussed this."

I hadn't realised we'd discussed it.

The really humiliating thing is that yesterday I went into town and bought a coffee. When I came home she said, "You can afford a £4.20 coffee but apparently you can't afford your share of the gas."

I said the coffee wasn't really relevant.

She said, "Everything's relevant when you're living in someone else's house."

I went upstairs and cried.

I know objectively that this sounds pathetic. We're talking about pennies. I can afford to pay for the water. It's not the money.

It's the fact that I feel like I'm being monitored constantly.
I now feel anxious every time I turn on a tap. I've started brushing my teeth with the bathroom door closed because I don't want her commenting on how long the water was running.

Last night she actually shouted upstairs:

"Are you having a bath?"

I wasn't. I'd dropped something in the sink.

I said no.

She said, "Good, because that's not happening."

I am beginning to dread being here. I don't want anyone to tell me to just leave because unfortunately it's not that simple and I don't have another option immediately available.

Karen says I'm being dramatic and that I'm "acting like she's withholding food".

She says I'm lucky she lets me stay here and that if I don't like her rules I can pay for a hotel. I do appreciate that it's her house. I really do.

But AIBU to think charging your sister 10p for a shower and keeping a notebook of her shower times is a bit excessive?

Your sister is a narcissistic control freak, who makes herself feel big by crushing your self worth.

Leave. Get an air bnb, go to a hotel, but leave and have no more to do with her. The way shes treating you is absolutely not ok.

Always at least one batshit extreme response with made up stuff.

Weirdpig · 21/09/2026 21:22

She's bonkers. As others have said, give her obviously too much money and be done with it.

bookshelf85 · 21/09/2026 21:22

I get it’s your sister and prob thinking you don’t need to pay - are you buying food/cooking? Contributing in other ways perhaps? It might be she has to be very careful with money . I agree with PPs just give her some money for letting you stay.

SomeOtherUser · 21/09/2026 21:22

I mean, you're not being unreasonable not to like this, but you are being quite unreasonable not to toughen up a little! It's your sister - can you not just tell her to piss off? Or give her £30 and have your showers in peace?

PinkLemons99 · 21/09/2026 21:16

You haven’t said how much rent you’ve offered to pay her towards your share of the bills?

Presumably once you’ve agreed a reasonable sum, she’ll be happy to let you carry on using the utilities as you wish?

Rent?? This is her fucking sister. WTF even is this.

Keroppi · 21/09/2026 21:23

AI garbage

Londonrach1 · 21/09/2026 21:23

Move out. Sounds awful. I'd be tempted to give her 20 a week saying that covers all water this week until you can escape

thetinsoldier · 21/09/2026 21:24

Are you paying her to stay there for these few weeks?? That’s the important question here.

Catza · 21/09/2026 21:26

While I may not have necessarily approached it in the same way, if someone stays with me for an extended period of time, I absolutely worry about bills. So if you are staying there for over a week, you should absolutely offer to contribute.
£20 a week seems more than fair with an added bonus of shutting her up.

Book yourself a hotel

A few weeks in a hotel would cost thousands. Having to put up with shower-tyrant is a small price to pay!

bababamama · 21/09/2026 21:12

Whilst she sounds extreme, I don’t understand showers longer than 5 minutes, I take less including washing my hair

Same - and I have long hair.

arethereanyleftatall · 21/09/2026 21:20

I think how we treat each other depends on the expectation of the other. If one person constantly takes and gives nothing back, it can get irksome.
if my sister was staying with me for 3 weeks because her house was being done, I’m sure she’d say ‘let me give you some money towards stuff’ and I’d say ‘don’t worry about it.’ But…if the offer from her didn’t come, I would find that quite rude.

I see your point. I would hope that an offer of some money had been made but perhaps not which would grate.

CandyCrushLevel14809 · 21/09/2026 21:28

You don't have a timer for the hot water in a combi boiler. You do for the heating.
So, something's not right.

If she is so careful with money (and since she's your sister you must already have known this) why didn't she have a conversation about costs before you moved in. That would be reasonable. Also reasonable would have been for you to agree an amount so she's not out of pocket.

B9waiting · 21/09/2026 21:30

speakingofart · 21/09/2026 20:55

Why don’t you just stick in £20 and have done with it? She sounds batshit but if you need to stay there and it’s not for long I’d just give her enough to pay for wallowing in a deep hot bath and laugh about it afterwards!

This! To be fair, she’s saving you a small fortune in not having to pay for accommodation so £20 for water is well spent.

Deep breaths & ignore as best you can!

Because its normal to relentlessly monitor your sisters washing habits, until she feels humiliated, right?

It’s a kitchen timer the sister has got to time the showers, not a hot water/central heating timer which dictates when it switches on or off.

so like an egg timer. Set it when you get in the shower, get out when the buzz goes off.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 21/09/2026 21:10

Do you pay water rates or have a water meter in your own home ?

I remember many many many years ago moving from London to Devon, our water rates were £16 p.m. in London and you can imagine my surprise to find it was... £55 ! p.m. down here in Devon - we went onto a water meter very very quickly !

However the SouthWest is prob one of the most expensive places for water in England ? and my current bill for the quarter is £330.

I suggest it's not the fact she has a combi boiler ( that's what heats the water ) but the cost of the water.

Edited to ask - is your sister on a water meter or on water rates ?

Edited

SW water is really quite extortionate, isn't it? I am this close to suggesting everyone showers at the gym instead of at home.

Switcher · 21/09/2026 21:33

I would give her as much money as I could possibly afford and once you move out you tell her to sit on her pile of money by herself as lifes too short for such pathetic behaviour.

Empress13 · 21/09/2026 21:35

She sounds batshit crazy I’d have to move out jeez!

Bridesmaidorexfriend · 21/09/2026 21:36

Yes she sounds crazy. Maybe she’s skint, maybe she’s just tight, but either way it doesn’t matter. If you’re staying with her you should have already offered her £50 or something to cover the additional costs of you being there, you’ve save £000s on hotels.

Sidebeforeself · 21/09/2026 21:37

As Chandler Bing would say “ Oh come on people!”

Harrumphhhh · 21/09/2026 21:37

Surely now is the time to give her £20/£50/£100 (whatever is the generous side of what you can afford), a bunch of flowers and a thank you card?

Your sister is barking mad. Hope you can return home soon

CorkedWellbeing · 21/09/2026 21:39

It sounds like she has some serious issues around MH and control. Also a bit like she enjoys humiliating you in small ways that can't quite be called out - she's doing you a favour, it's her house, her water, etc. etc. but she's being really unkind.

I'd give her £20 a week toward hot water and say that you're sorry for disturbing her system, you appreciate her, but it's stressing you out and you don't want to hear anymore about 10p, 18p or whatever, so you're paying ahead and hope it helps.

Rise above as best you can, but don't let her bully you. Good luck, OP ❤️

@DuchessOf
Bung her a tenner then check how long it is before you will be back at yours
She's probably the type I imagine knows what she looks like, how she comes across so uses that against those unlike herself to hector with her opinions
I'm imagining a off-thinking Miss Trunchbull myself
Who was not a fan of the quiet ones just
Like you yourself
