AIBU to think timing and charging for my showers is excessive?

I know this is going to sound completely ridiculous and I am aware that I probably need to grow a backbone, but I'm genuinely upset and don't know whether I'm being unreasonable.

I'm 37F and my sister, "Karen", is 41F. We're very different people. She's quite a big, loud woman and has always been very confident and outspoken. I'm small and quiet and tend to avoid confrontation. She says I'm "too sensitive", which is probably true.

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat. I am very grateful because she has a spare room and I don't really want to stay in a hotel.
The problem is her hot water.

Karen is extremely careful with money. She has a combi boiler and apparently has worked out exactly how much a shower costs. When I arrived she told me that showers were limited to five minutes and that I should "think of the meter".

I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

There is now a little kitchen timer outside the bathroom. She says I'm supposed to set it before getting in the shower.

The first morning I was here I took about seven minutes because I'd washed my hair. She knocked on the door at five minutes and said, "That's your five."

I said, "Sorry, I've just got shampoo in my hair."

She said, "Well, you've had your warning."

I thought this was incredibly strange but didn't say anything.

She then told me I'd used 7p worth of hot water and asked me for 10p.

I laughed because I assumed she was joking.

She just looked at me and said, "It's not free."

I gave her the 10p.

Since then she's been keeping track. She has a notebook on the kitchen worktop with everyone's shower times written down. Mine says:
Monday – 6 mins – 12p
Tuesday – 4 mins – 8p
Wednesday – 8 mins – 16p

I asked why Wednesday was 16p and she said I'd "had the water running unnecessarily".

I honestly don't know how she knows this.

Yesterday I had a shower before work and she knocked after five minutes.

I said, "I'm nearly finished."

She said, "You're always nearly finished."

I got out.

Later she told me that she'd calculated I'd used an additional 11p of gas and that she thought it was "only fair" that I contributed £1 towards the week's hot water.

I gave it to her because I couldn't think of what else to do.
This morning I got up early because I thought I could have a shower before she woke up.

Apparently she has changed the boiler settings so that the hot water doesn't come on until 6.30am.

I turned the tap on at 6.15 and it was cold.

I texted her asking if there was something wrong with the boiler and she replied:

"No. It's 6.15. We've discussed this."

I hadn't realised we'd discussed it.

The really humiliating thing is that yesterday I went into town and bought a coffee. When I came home she said, "You can afford a £4.20 coffee but apparently you can't afford your share of the gas."

I said the coffee wasn't really relevant.

She said, "Everything's relevant when you're living in someone else's house."

I went upstairs and cried.

I know objectively that this sounds pathetic. We're talking about pennies. I can afford to pay for the water. It's not the money.

It's the fact that I feel like I'm being monitored constantly.
I now feel anxious every time I turn on a tap. I've started brushing my teeth with the bathroom door closed because I don't want her commenting on how long the water was running.

Last night she actually shouted upstairs:

"Are you having a bath?"

I wasn't. I'd dropped something in the sink.

I said no.

She said, "Good, because that's not happening."

I am beginning to dread being here. I don't want anyone to tell me to just leave because unfortunately it's not that simple and I don't have another option immediately available.

Karen says I'm being dramatic and that I'm "acting like she's withholding food".

She says I'm lucky she lets me stay here and that if I don't like her rules I can pay for a hotel. I do appreciate that it's her house. I really do.

But AIBU to think charging your sister 10p for a shower and keeping a notebook of her shower times is a bit excessive?

Go stay in a hotel if you don’t like it!
So you are happy to spend over £4 on takeaway coffee but don’t want to pay for the energy and water you are using!
You should have agreed payment prior to you staying!
But any sympathy I had is gone because what does it matter to you what she spends her money on! If you actually said that to my face I would tell you to leave!

It probably isn't about the money. It will be about something else - something that the water use and the monitoring and the noting down means to her.

We all have things we do that help us to feel somehow safer or more in control or more purposeful or whatever. It's just that sometimes these things turn into really restrictive rules that infringe on life's pleasures and damage our relationships. If we are too dependent on those things to be able to flex, there is emotional fallout.

I wonder whether you can be explicit with her. 'I'm happy to pay for the water I've used and more, because I value your kindness and hospitality. So given that I'm paying, am I free to shower as much as I want now? Or is this about more than just the money? Genuinely curious as it seems like it is really getting to you and I want to understand what it means for you.'

The problem with being explicit is that in the past she's gotten really upset and sort of shuts down. I got her l'occitane hand cream one year for her birthday and she got cross because it was "expensive" (not quite, got it from TKMaxx!) and then made a huff about having to buy me something for my birthday at the same price. I told her to not worry about that but it was a preoccupation for the rest of the day.

She sounds off her tits!

FruAashild · 21/09/2026 22:36

I presume you're joking about crisp £100 notes as there's no such thing.

@itsalltoplayfor all the Scottish and Northern Irish banks issue £100 notes.

She's quite uptight. It's been an issue in other relationships. We aren't very close because of it. I was diagnosed many years ago with a neurological condition and may very well end up with dementia in my old age. It really made me change my tune about petty nonsense. Life is too short for it!

You have given up focusing on petty nonsense, but you are posting on here because the sister you already knew was uptight, is being uptight. Sorry about your neurological condition. They are no fun at all.

Yeah, I know the type

In that case, just pay for the showers

amber763 · 21/09/2026 22:41

Shes being crazy but just give her 20 quid to cover your stay and hopefully she'll stop her nonsense

Merryoldgoat · 21/09/2026 22:42

Why are you putting up with it?

OnTheBoardwalk · 21/09/2026 22:45

DuchessOf · 21/09/2026 21:57

The odd thing is she's probably more well off than anyone else in the family! She got a big payout many years ago - I'm talking over £200,000 - from a harassment case at work and used that to pay off her house. She still works but if you don't have a mortgage, kids, partner, pets... what could you possibly be spending it on? She doesn't travel and her hobbies are all home based and cheap.

Why does any of this matter?

she is putting you up, you are costing her money for electricity and probably her food

id give you max 3 weeks notice to stop your feed loading arse and get out of my house

But the sister says she doesn’t want to take more money which has actually been offered!

RaininSummer · 21/09/2026 22:50

She is crackers but unfortunately for you it's a case of 'her house, her rules'. Hope you can move out soon.

Venicelagoon · 21/09/2026 22:52

I couldn't stand this. Move out.

She sounds totally mad. Maybe OCD? In my family we have a lot of eccentric relatives and have a rule that we don't complain when they do one of their predictably eccentric things as most of it is entirely foreseeable. I suspect some of these things would have been quite predictable for you? You do have to accept she won't change and find ways to avoid getting upset about it I.e. probably staying with someone else.

nowhite · 21/09/2026 22:52

speakingofart · 21/09/2026 20:55

Why don’t you just stick in £20 and have done with it? She sounds batshit but if you need to stay there and it’s not for long I’d just give her enough to pay for wallowing in a deep hot bath and laugh about it afterwards!

Yes absolutely this!!! £40 if you have to!!!

Thesafetygeneral · 21/09/2026 22:57

She sounds bat crazy. I’d tell her you’ll pay for your water but she can’t limit you to five mins. Then pay her to the EXACT penny and no more. I don’t know how you can stand to live there to be honest. Can you not sofa surf / cheap Airbnb?

DryadsRest · 21/09/2026 22:57

OrangeFlower14 · 21/09/2026 22:39

Agree, think you might just have to suck it up and pay probably to the penny for the showers
she may feel humiliated somehow if you overpay for the shower
I expect she actually cares for you hugely in her own way - because I can imagine someone who controls their life to that degree would find hosting a guest challenging to fit in within her tightly controlled life, but nevertheless she wanted to have you stay with her - so she probably loves you a lot!

Sorehandsandfeet · 21/09/2026 22:58

I think there is more to it than just money. It sounds like a mental health issue/OCD and I bet if you give her lots of money she will still be anxious about how much water you are using.

It's more about control.

I'd say her actions stem from anxiety more than meanness. That said, you should not be controlled like this and you shouldn't be afraid to raise the issue.

JammyDodger777 · 21/09/2026 22:59

Keroppi · 21/09/2026 21:23

AI garbage

Definitely, you can't set a timer on hot water on a combi boiler for a start, open a tap and a combi boiler heats the water straight away.

FruAashild · 21/09/2026 22:59

It does sound like some kind of anxiety and need for control. I know you've already offered to pay and she's refused but maybe get that hundred quid you offered initially and next time she asks for 17p hand it to her and say 'keep the change'. It will annoy her but she won't be able to say anything because inside she's probably aware what she's doing is annoying but she can't help it. I know she's your big sister and her being annoyed at you upsets you but remember it's nothing you have done, it's a compulsion she doesn't have control over. You can gently tease her about it and see how she reacts to that.

DustyMaiden · 21/09/2026 22:59

Leave a 20p outside the bathroom and go to town.

Ohdearnotthisagain · 21/09/2026 23:00

Just pay her a weekly amount or find somewhere else to go.

Does she have any friends or work? Ever had a boyfriend? Have you ever said this is nuts?

echt · 21/09/2026 23:06

Do not be surprised if, when filthy tenners way in excess of possible use are handed over, she'll still go on about the length of showers. Or something else.

WhyCantISayFork · 21/09/2026 23:10

It sounds like she has major control issues. Of course YANBU to think this is weird.

HonorBound · 21/09/2026 23:11

This doesn’t purely have to do with money.

it’s something else at play here

tne birthday present, she wasn’t able to accept the gift and enjoy it - she worried about the return gift

it’s more about waste and not wasting things, but what the crux is?

it’s not about being stingy, it’s not about control either. It will though be misconstrued as tight and controlling
