AIBU to think timing and charging for my showers is excessive?

I know this is going to sound completely ridiculous and I am aware that I probably need to grow a backbone, but I'm genuinely upset and don't know whether I'm being unreasonable.

I'm 37F and my sister, "Karen", is 41F. We're very different people. She's quite a big, loud woman and has always been very confident and outspoken. I'm small and quiet and tend to avoid confrontation. She says I'm "too sensitive", which is probably true.

I'm staying with her for a few weeks while some work is being done at my flat. I am very grateful because she has a spare room and I don't really want to stay in a hotel.
The problem is her hot water.

Karen is extremely careful with money. She has a combi boiler and apparently has worked out exactly how much a shower costs. When I arrived she told me that showers were limited to five minutes and that I should "think of the meter".

I honestly thought she was joking.

She wasn't.

There is now a little kitchen timer outside the bathroom. She says I'm supposed to set it before getting in the shower.

The first morning I was here I took about seven minutes because I'd washed my hair. She knocked on the door at five minutes and said, "That's your five."

I said, "Sorry, I've just got shampoo in my hair."

She said, "Well, you've had your warning."

I thought this was incredibly strange but didn't say anything.

She then told me I'd used 7p worth of hot water and asked me for 10p.

I laughed because I assumed she was joking.

She just looked at me and said, "It's not free."

I gave her the 10p.

Since then she's been keeping track. She has a notebook on the kitchen worktop with everyone's shower times written down. Mine says:
Monday – 6 mins – 12p
Tuesday – 4 mins – 8p
Wednesday – 8 mins – 16p

I asked why Wednesday was 16p and she said I'd "had the water running unnecessarily".

I honestly don't know how she knows this.

Yesterday I had a shower before work and she knocked after five minutes.

I said, "I'm nearly finished."

She said, "You're always nearly finished."

I got out.

Later she told me that she'd calculated I'd used an additional 11p of gas and that she thought it was "only fair" that I contributed £1 towards the week's hot water.

I gave it to her because I couldn't think of what else to do.
This morning I got up early because I thought I could have a shower before she woke up.

Apparently she has changed the boiler settings so that the hot water doesn't come on until 6.30am.

I turned the tap on at 6.15 and it was cold.

I texted her asking if there was something wrong with the boiler and she replied:

"No. It's 6.15. We've discussed this."

I hadn't realised we'd discussed it.

The really humiliating thing is that yesterday I went into town and bought a coffee. When I came home she said, "You can afford a £4.20 coffee but apparently you can't afford your share of the gas."

I said the coffee wasn't really relevant.

She said, "Everything's relevant when you're living in someone else's house."

I went upstairs and cried.

I know objectively that this sounds pathetic. We're talking about pennies. I can afford to pay for the water. It's not the money.

It's the fact that I feel like I'm being monitored constantly.
I now feel anxious every time I turn on a tap. I've started brushing my teeth with the bathroom door closed because I don't want her commenting on how long the water was running.

Last night she actually shouted upstairs:

"Are you having a bath?"

I wasn't. I'd dropped something in the sink.

I said no.

She said, "Good, because that's not happening."

I am beginning to dread being here. I don't want anyone to tell me to just leave because unfortunately it's not that simple and I don't have another option immediately available.

Karen says I'm being dramatic and that I'm "acting like she's withholding food".

She says I'm lucky she lets me stay here and that if I don't like her rules I can pay for a hotel. I do appreciate that it's her house. I really do.

But AIBU to think charging your sister 10p for a shower and keeping a notebook of her shower times is a bit excessive?

When you're back in your place and she visits, be sure to charge her the price of boiling the kettle if she wants a cup of tea.

Pedallleur · 21/09/2026 21:07

Not worth the hassle. Overpay her and shower yourself senseless until your credit runs out then repeat. Probably drive her nuts to hear the water running down the drain. Don't stay again if it causes you issues. And ask for a copy of her tariff so you know what to charge her if she visits.

Fiddlesticks1 · 21/09/2026 21:07

Totally bonkers.

SleeptightEvangeline · 21/09/2026 21:08

Im in agreement with PPS, instead of crying upstairs just give her some money towards the utilities. She’s being incredibly tight in one sense but at the same time she’s very generously sharing her space with you. Just over pay for your usage as a thank you.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 21/09/2026 21:10

Do you pay water rates or have a water meter in your own home ?

I remember many many many years ago moving from London to Devon, our water rates were £16 p.m. in London and you can imagine my surprise to find it was... £55 ! p.m. down here in Devon - we went onto a water meter very very quickly !

However the SouthWest is prob one of the most expensive places for water in England ? and my current bill for the quarter is £330.

I suggest it's not the fact she has a combi boiler ( that's what heats the water ) but the cost of the water.

Edited to ask - is your sister on a water meter or on water rates ?

arethereanyleftatall · 21/09/2026 21:10

Her note taking for pennies is very strange, but as you have not mentioned giving her any money at all towards bills, I’m assuming you haven’t. If you know she’s careful with money, I’m really not getting why the first time she said about the five minutes you didn’t counter with ‘would it be ok if I just gave you £50 to cover my water for the weeks, I don’t want to be timing my showers, but obviously I don’t want you to be out of pocket for me staying here.’ If she’s had to resort to this, could it be as a result of you not offering upfront - which is possibly just as strange as the note taking depending on your history.

onetrickrockingpony · 21/09/2026 21:10

She's extremely careful with money and you're living in her house without contributing. If she's that concerned about money and utilities then your showers are actually really stressing her out. Give her some money, buy her a bottle of wine, and say thank you for letting you stay....

GoldMerchant · 21/09/2026 21:10

Timing showers and billing you by the penny is ridiculous. But you don't say what you've offered in return for her letting you stay and avoid the considerable cost of a hotel.

Give her £200 a month to cover the increase in bills and to say thank you. And have all the showers you want.

RandomCactus · 21/09/2026 20:58

Have you offered her any money for the weeks you’re staying with her? I get the impression that you maybe haven’t, and she’s annoyed and expressing it this way?

Well yes.

i tend to find if someone doesn’t offer to pay their way it annoys the fuck out of me.

if they do offer though I’m likely to wave it off with oh no it’s only a few weeks/not putting us out so don’t worry about it.

i gave one of DS’s mates a lift to school every day for 6 months. Pissed me off they never mentioned petrol money, but had they offered at the start I wouldn’t have taken it.

backformoreofthesame · 21/09/2026 21:12

Slightly off but why do you need more than 5 mins ? I mean yes she is being daft but it shouldn’t actually impact you if you were reasonable in the first place

bababamama · 21/09/2026 21:12

Whilst she sounds extreme, I don’t understand showers longer than 5 minutes, I take less including washing my hair

CombatBarbie · 21/09/2026 21:13

Yetanotherone12 · 21/09/2026 20:57

Are you paying her a contribution toward the bills? have you offered?

I’d be offering a flat amount plus a bit extra- here Karen, if I give you £200 a month that should cover gas, electric and water, then we can split anything else like food as we go.

Still cheaper than a hotel and worth it to stop her complaining.

So what happens when you need to shave legs, bikini line etc? Granted were changing seasons but even still. Reminds me of the old ship shower stories. In, get wet, turn off, lather up, turn on and rinse off...get out.

Does she also only fill the kettle once a day and use a thermos?

Just give her £20 a week and ask her to work out how many minutes that gives you.

Exactly. This sounds to me like resentment over the principle of the whole arrangement!

Jackrussellmansion · 21/09/2026 21:14

How much are you paying her whilst you stay with her?

justrelaxandsleep · 21/09/2026 21:15

Sorry this made me realise why I’m
not well off. I wouldn’t dream of treating a family member like this, it sounds like something out of a bad comedy. I would chuck her £20 and then continue logging your showers and deducting the “cost” from the £20. Hopefully by the time you leave she’ll owe you some money back!

PinkLemons99 · 21/09/2026 21:16

You haven’t said how much rent you’ve offered to pay her towards your share of the bills?

Presumably once you’ve agreed a reasonable sum, she’ll be happy to let you carry on using the utilities as you wish?

Smallestshadow · 21/09/2026 21:17

Sounds like there could be more to this- are you a messy houseguest? Have you offered her money for board & food? Do you have any unpleasant habits? She could be resentful towards you & it’s manifesting itself in this way.

LoveHearts69 · 21/09/2026 21:17

Like others have said, I’d give her £50 or so and say that’s for your future hot water useage for these weeks and hope that keeps her quiet.

Otherwise I’d be finding a cute Airbnb or something and leaving for the rest of the time!

SleeptightEvangeline · 21/09/2026 21:18

The fact she’s pulled you up on the coffee should tell you she’s resenting the extra cost in gas and water. She’s saving you a fortune in hotel bills. Just make a decent contribution and all will be good I’m sure.

I wouldn’t dream of staying with a family member and not insisting on giving them a couple of hundred quid for their bills and expenses, plus a takeaway or two.

a hotel or Airbnb would cost over a grand a month. I’d be appreciative and not expect anyone to be out of pocket for letting me stay.

TheTikiTurnip · 21/09/2026 21:18

Your sister is a narcissistic control freak, who makes herself feel big by crushing your self worth.

Leave. Get an air bnb, go to a hotel, but leave and have no more to do with her. The way shes treating you is absolutely not ok.

I think how we treat each other depends on the expectation of the other. If one person constantly takes and gives nothing back, it can get irksome.
if my sister was staying with me for 3 weeks because her house was being done, I’m sure she’d say ‘let me give you some money towards stuff’ and I’d say ‘don’t worry about it.’ But…if the offer from her didn’t come, I would find that quite rude.

localnotail · 21/09/2026 21:20

She sounds a bit insane, tbh. I would do what others suggested - pay her 50 quid and tell her to shut up about the water. Its still cheaper than staying in the hotel.

I'm also quite petty so I would insist on charging her for something idiotic too, when opportunity presents itself.

shhblackbag · 21/09/2026 21:20

Are,you contributing anything to food and bills while living there? If no, you're unreasonable. Merely existing is expensive at this point.

Sidebeforeself · 21/09/2026 21:21

Really? Mm
