AIBU to think migrant sex crime data should be published? And to wonder why Labour are blocking the release of that data?

Labour Blocks Release of Migrant Crime Data

'Victims of serious crimes and their families have joined forces to demand that the Labour government publish detailed data on offences committed by foreign nationals, accusing ministers of withholding information that is “clearly and legitimately in the public interest”.

Among the signatories are victims of high-profile sexual offences and families of murder victims. One signatory is a 14-year-old victim of a sexual assault in Epping allegedly committed by an illegal immigrant, in the same Essex town where asylum seekers were housed at the controversial Bell Hotel.
Fiona Goddard, a survivor of rape-gang grooming who has campaigned publicly about her experiences, has also signed the letter.

Eight relatives of Rhiannon Whyte, a hotel worker murdered by a Sudanese national, are also among those backing the demand.'

Is somebody pissed off that they couldn't kick off about the data on asylum, visas, massive progress on reducing the inherited applications backlog and everything else that was released yesterday, by any chance?

I know people say you should take a day off sometimes, but it's pretty noticeable that for one day, there was absolutely nothing on here.

Oh, some posters have already tried to discredit that data.

It’s an appeal by the MoJ against a ruling of the Information Commissioner’s Office that the government must publish criminal conviction data broken down by nationality. I haven’t seen anything limiting it to sex crime data. The appeal seems to be on the basis of cost and complexity, whereas the IOC accepted it would be both costly and complex but ruled that those are not sufficient reasons.

Thank you, @HoppityBun

Yes there was pro Labour posts promoted it, although it seems only one type of accommodation was included in their press release.

They should also publish if crimes are committed by the poor, the age, and the level of formal education of the criminal.

It matters much more than race.

And you’ll see how the race circle of the venn diagram often overlaps with poverty / youth / lack of education.

It’s just that people prefer to pin the reasons on race, not the real issues.

I completely agree and likely why the data isn’t published because people won’t look at the full data but instead look purely at what they want to see.

How many crimes are committed because people are preyed upon exactly because they are immigrants.

How many women are forced into prostitution because they have no support in this country.

How is the data going to help when statistics show that black males are more likely to be stopped and searched, more likely to be arrested, more likely to be charged and more likely to have a higher sentence - compared to the exact same crime as a white male.

The statistics are already skewed because of the two tier justice system that black males face.

Knowing this, how can we trust data that claims to record nationality and crime data.

And what if someone was born in Poland but came here at 3 months old vs at 30yo - they’re both still foreign born.

Oh, some posters have already tried to discredit that data.

The only reaction on The Other Thread to my comment that the BBC had announced a halving of the numbers in the asylum hotels was a big attempt at distraction into the issues around other modes of shelter.

This was mainly by one person. I don’t think I am alone in believing that if Reform or possibly the Tories had announced such a result, many on that thread would have been shouting it from the rooftops.

Who’s that then, may as well be direct with dragging across threads with digs after all

But yes I don’t think Labour pledged to use barracks / HMOs at the GE. Rather they were adamant they’d smash the gangs.

So we’ll see.

Despite the majority of posts the vote is 75% yanbu. So I guess it’s mostly pro Labour posting.

I wish women put the same energy into this anti migrants crimes against women as they should to towards the crimes against women caused by white British males.

It's not a fucking competition.

The hotels? Yes. But what about the number of boats, the number of people, the number of visas granted, the size of the backlog and everything else?

TemperanceWest · Today 18:55

pinkstripeycat · Today 18:26

Oh it’s possible. Every crime recorded gives the ethnicity and sex of the people involved. The police systems show it

I am not sure that is true for ethnicity. For example I remember reading the data collection on grooming gangs. The ethnicity of perpetrators was very often unrecorded when it was recorded it was based on what ethnicity the perpetrator said they identified with.

What are you talking about?

Rape crisis collects data.

90% of victims of SA or rape know their attackers personally.

90% of attacks happen in areas the victim previously felt safe (eg workplaces and homes, not all in dark alleyways etc)

You have to use common sense.

How are immigrants more of a danger when 90% of perpetrators are known to the victim??

The only way this would be possible is if you happen to know lots of immigrants and very few British born men - in which you’d likely be an immigrant yourself.

Or do you think that the charity rape crisis is also part of the conspiracy theory that is ‘covering up’ sexual crimes??

You are also completely dismissing how many women are veiled and still get SA and raped.

That poster was me. I am not particularly a Labour supporter so that’s a mistaken presumption.

There have only ever been less than 1000 in barracks type accommodation, and you yourself pointed out that the numbers in dispersed housing have also come down significantly, though they are not at their Labour lowest.

Boats, applications, visas and backlogs are all down according to HMG statistics.

UnaGatita · Today 19:04

poetryandwine · Today 17:16

The German police statistics tell a different story. The BKA (Federal Criminal Police) report that a settled immigrant is 2.5 to 3 times more likely than a native German to be accused of a sex crime by the victim. An asylum seeker or other short term immigrant is 3 to 4 times more likely.

This strongly suggests that short term immigrants do, on the whole, commit more sex offences than settled immigrants. However, people are notoriously reluctant to accuse assailants they know, particularly those they are in a relationship with - sex crimes by known assailants are severely under-reported. Sex crimes by strangers, particularly strangers with dark skin, are much less under- reported.

When one considers the reporting problem, it is difficult to draw valid conclusions about who is committing sex crimes in Germany, except for what I said above. And yes, I think we all know about the 2015-16 New Year’s Eve mass assault. In consequence Germany made deportations easier, which is fine with me.,

I think the higher figure in Germany was referring to one or two specific countries within the asylum population, rather than the whole population.
As I have had asylum seekers in my home who have told me some horror stories about other men in their accommodations, I have a wide range of opinions on the topic these days.

The HMO part that is.

I would have thought it was fairly obvious - to avoid stupid, vigilante behaviour by racists.

If there’s nothing to hide and British men are supposedly worse then don’t you think it would do the opposite and shut people up or are you not that confident in what the data will show?

BIWI · Today 19:11

I have no idea what the data will show. But if we do get data, then it needs to show sex crimes committed by ALL people. Not just migrants.

I've said that several times now, not sure why that's so hard to understand?

That is what is recorded

5MinuteArgument · Today 19:12

It would only show it if the data included data on ALL sex crimes, not just those committed by migrants. The OP isn't asking for comparative data:

Victims of serious crimes and their families have joined forces to demand that the Labour government publish detailed data on offences committed by foreign nationals

Presumably we already have data on offences committed by British nationals. But we don't have data on offences committed by foreign nationals. We need both. That's the point.

I assume it’s me you are replying to. As I said we’ll see the data for what it is and then we’ll know how serious the problem really is if we compare it per capita. Only people who are worried about what the data says would want it suppressed and play the usual racism card.

BIWI · Today 19:16

a) I'm not 'worried' about what the data will say (other than being worried about the fact that sex crimes are being committed, of course)
b) I don't want any data suppressed
c) I think we should have data on ALL those who have committed sex crimes, not just migrants

If you are not worried why would there be any vigilante behaviour? There’d be no reason at all for it if the data doesn’t back it up. Also they have the data for all crimes, I don’t see anyone here saying they shouldn’t publish it for British men so that’s not an issue.
