AIBU to think migrant sex crime data should be published? And to wonder why Labour are blocking the release of that data?

Labour Blocks Release of Migrant Crime Data

'Victims of serious crimes and their families have joined forces to demand that the Labour government publish detailed data on offences committed by foreign nationals, accusing ministers of withholding information that is “clearly and legitimately in the public interest”.

Among the signatories are victims of high-profile sexual offences and families of murder victims. One signatory is a 14-year-old victim of a sexual assault in Epping allegedly committed by an illegal immigrant, in the same Essex town where asylum seekers were housed at the controversial Bell Hotel.
Fiona Goddard, a survivor of rape-gang grooming who has campaigned publicly about her experiences, has also signed the letter.

Eight relatives of Rhiannon Whyte, a hotel worker murdered by a Sudanese national, are also among those backing the demand.'

I’m not sure we even collect that data. I did listen to a podcast where it was mentioned that Germany does collect that data and figures released showed migrants from specific countries were committing such offences at 17 times the rate of the native population.

I would have thought it was fairly obvious - to avoid stupid, vigilante behaviour by racists.

You are correct. No Tory or Labour government has ever collected this data..

Whether it should be collected may be a matter for debate, but OP’s wording suggests that this is Labour’s doing. That is false.

Yes I think you are right. Same for a few other European countries but the figure is even higher.

What is the UK figure I wonder, what is the content and why are our government trying to stop us knowing that information?

It's really weird. Why can't we know, when it affects all of us? Never mind those poor families victims who already know the horror first hand.

I wish women put the same energy into this anti migrants crimes against women as they should to towards the crimes against women caused by white British males.

Really? What about the women and children at higher risk?

I assume you do understand that they do, really. And that you understand proportionality. I'll let you think about that and not patronise you by explaining it.

Don’t be silly woman and children don’t matter.

Can’t have men getting fingers pointed at them.

Incorrect. The data is collected. Labour are currently spending tax payers money in court stopping it being published.

Publishing "detailed data" on offences commited by foreign nationals is meaningless unless this data is compared to the offences commited by natives. And, as far as violence against women, I think data is quite poor in general because it relies on convictions. We don't have any idea of the actual scale of the problem because these cases are often underreported and seldom lead to convictions.
It is also not clear whom we consider "foreign nationals" in this data set. As far as I know, Shabir Ahmed has dual citizenship so where do we put him in this picture?
Releasing the data will do nothing but fuel racism and more violence against minorities, many of whom have absolutely nothing to do with the crimes commited.

PinkFrogss · Today 16:41

Generally data only ever seems to be sorted and reported based on convictions. While the rape conviction rate is so low any related data is meaningless. And for me personally increasing that conviction rate is far more important than reporting on stats.

Tryagain26 · Today 16:41

Why do you need to know?
The only reason I can think of that anyone would want it published is to stir up trouble. And there are enough people who already do that.
As others have said that information has never been published by any government. And I doubt it is even collected.
It isn't easy or cheap to collect information, either and there are many other things I would prefer the Government to spend money on

LizzieSiddal · Today 16:41

As a pp said this info hasn’t been collected by ANY government. It seems a very important detail that you are missing in your OP and it makes it look like you’re just having a go at Labour.

MyNeedyLilacBird · Today 16:42

I think we all know what the data would show. The delusional left have blinkers on and just can't cope with the truth. They love pointing fingers and screaming racist

poetryandwine · Today 16:43

It may or may not be a good idea but keeping a longstanding system as it has always been is not a sudden conspiracy by a government you disagree with.

Everything you think now about Labour applied equally to the Tories.

LizzieSiddal · Today 16:43

Also I have non white people in my family. They are all born in the UK but have parents who came here decades ago. Stupid people assume they are migrants and shout nasty things at them in the street as they are going about their daily lives.

So no I don’t think publishing these facts will help anyone. it will just make life more difficult those who aren’t white in the UK.

It has been collected. You are incorrect. Not by the government but by the police, as it happens. the MoJ holds all the data. It's about publishing it - not collecting it. Keep up.

Well did the Labour government stop publishing this collected data the day they won the election or have no other government published it? We all know the answer so stop being economical with the truth.

Yes, the OP and the linked article certainly give the impression that the data is collected but labour is just stopping it from being published.

The article linked in the article that gives a 34% figure for sexual assaults committed by foreign nationals, but the data is actually “up to 34%” as it assumes that all convictions where the nationality is unknown is a foreign nationality. It also ignores the obvious fact that as the data is based on convictions it’s inherently useless when looking to find out more about sex crimes committed.

I would have thought it was fairly obvious - to avoid stupid, vigilante behaviour by racists.

This is so odd to me. You think that preventing people from hearing true facts prevents racist behaviour? Is your position that racism is well evidenced, but you do not like it, so you want to hide true facts?

This is such an odd position to me. It feels like saying "racists are of course correct, and have the facts on their side. But I dislike racism for non-fact-based reasons, so I would like the government to hide the facts."

To be clear, I am not a racist, and therefore I am fine if the government publish accurate information.

The rest of what I said is correct. In particular whatever you now say about Labour applies equally to the Tories, as the policy is old.
