Labour Blocks Release of Migrant Crime Data

'Victims of serious crimes and their families have joined forces to demand that the Labour government publish detailed data on offences committed by foreign nationals, accusing ministers of withholding information that is “clearly and legitimately in the public interest”.

Among the signatories are victims of high-profile sexual offences and families of murder victims. One signatory is a 14-year-old victim of a sexual assault in Epping allegedly committed by an illegal immigrant, in the same Essex town where asylum seekers were housed at the controversial Bell Hotel.
Fiona Goddard, a survivor of rape-gang grooming who has campaigned publicly about her experiences, has also signed the letter.

Eight relatives of Rhiannon Whyte, a hotel worker murdered by a Sudanese national, are also among those backing the demand.'

They've released a leaflet for asylum seekers/migrants telling them that sexually harassing, raping people etc, isn't what we do in the UK. I cannot believe that on one hand this pamphlet is released yet they are refusing to release sexually motivated crime figures.

Even Matthew Syed who reports for The Times and is very far from the right, criticised the government over the publishing of this leaflet. If we don't have a problem with migrant sex crime why do they need a leaflet.

You don’t think similar leaflets are produced in schools, colleges, universities etc as well as places like prisons?

Even workplaces have a sexual harassment policy which states that certain behaviours will not be tolerated.

So why is it just the ones given to immigrants you have an issue with?

We have a worldwide problem of violence against women and being told that it will not be accepted is surely a good thing?

I wish women put the same energy into this anti migrants crimes against women as they should to towards the crimes against women caused by white British males.

Yes yes yes. Why is the concern “immigrants” rather than the appalling rates of crimes against women overall

I would have thought it was fairly obvious - to avoid stupid, vigilante behaviour by racists.

This assumes the data will show that migrants are committing a larger percentage of violent/sex crimes per capita than native Brits.
Otherwise where is the impetus for "racist" vigilantism against migrants going to come from?

Minasama · Today 17:35

UnaGatita · Today 16:32

I’m not sure we even collect that data. I did listen to a podcast where it was mentioned that Germany does collect that data and figures released showed migrants from specific countries were committing such offences at 17 times the rate of the native population.

I used to live in Germany 20+ years ago (so before the recent waves of migration) and I remember that Turks made up something like 22 or 24 percent of the prison population vs around 10 percent of the general population. There would be a stink about it every time the data was published.
At the time I was younger and thought the authorities were being naive to publish it if they wanted to maintain harmony and stop people being racist.
Now I think this data really should be published because the population has a right to know. I have teenage daughters and sadly we need to be clear with them on when they especially need to have their guard up.

Nothing stopping you from doing this or from starting a separate thread on it.

THIS thread is about the crime data on migrants and why we are not allowed to know what it is.

MaturingCheeseball · Today 17:36

But for the millionth time, if the data were made available then we could judge for ourselves.

Why would the Govt seek to withhold the data in a legal challenge? If it shows that migrant men present little or no danger then surely they would be eager to publish stats.

Of course British men commit sexual crimes - but posters can’t seem to grasp proportionality. European studies have revealed that stranger and gang/group assaults are more prevalent in men from certain countries.

What data would reveal to me is whether it is acceptable to allow migrant men of whom we have no background knowledge to move freely in the community if they statistically present a threat to the public. Covering up information imo presents a severe dereliction of duty to keep citizens safe.

By not releasing it makes it look like it will be so high that they are protecting them rather than their citizens.

That will anger the very people who they claim they need to hide the stats from and will lead to an increase in votes for reform and restore and any party who claim they will release the info.

Release all the stats.

By nationality, by immigration status.
Male, female, trans identifying.
By age.
Religion.

All of it.

Edited

Yes I agree.

Although I don’t think the data is just sitting there in a hidden column in a spreadsheet. I’m sure the data would need to be merged in from all sorts of datasets from all sorts of organizations in all sorts of different formats and a considerable amount of data manipulation would have to happen before anyone could start creating tables, charts and writing a commentary.

Proportional Representation: Non-UK citizens account for a percentage of convictions and prison populations roughly comparable to their overall share of the adult population (e.g., roughly 12–13%).
Age Standardization: Non-citizens skew younger than the general UK-born population, and criminal offending across all demographics is highest among young men. When researchers adjust for age differences, non-UK nationals are generally represented at rates equal to or lower than UK-born individuals.
Offence Variations: Available figures suggest foreign nationals are somewhat more frequently processed for specific categories like drug offences, while remaining underrepresented in others compared to British nationals.

@LiuBei

You think that preventing people from hearing true facts prevents racist behaviour

Why not, then, ask for data re sex crimes committed by ALL people? Not just migrants. What is the agenda here, do you think? Why does the OP (and others) not seem bothered by the lack of that data?

We already have plenty of indiginous predatory males in the UK. Is that not enough for you

Not sure why you’ve lied about that.

Through my work, I can almost guarantee that the problem is white British males.

Yet I would welcome the data to be released.

Every single person on here knows that the high risk males are the ones around you.
90% of SA or rape victims know their attacker.

So unless you are friends with loads of immigrant men, then your chance of getting assaulted by one is 10% compared to 90% someone you know.

Don’t let your algorithm fool you.

poetryandwine · Today 18:06

My understanding is that the data is not held in anything remotely resembling a publishable form. Getting it into shape would be an almighty task.

As above, it is probably not legal and certainly not ethical to single out foreign nationals. Data for all sex offenders would be required.

And for what purpose? Many of posts here so keen to have this information are assuming guilt by (dubious) statistics.

If unknown, unvetted men should be detained, @Paganpentacle , what about the approximately 530,000 male NEETS? These are young British men age 16-25 Not in Education, Employment or Training. They are in the peak testosterone years. They skew towards the lower socioeconomic classes. Many have never had a job, a passport, a driving licence, or any real contact with the bureaucracy. They are largely unvetted and many feel unseen. They are known to be at risk of entry into the criminal justice system.

Should they also be locked up?

BTW as PP have said the type of leaflet you are referring to is typically found all over university campuses and modern workplaces. Hardly unique to asylum seekers.

It would only show it if the data included data on ALL sex crimes, not just those committed by migrants. The OP isn't asking for comparative data:

My DH was a police officer for 20 years until 10 months ago when he retired. Around 10 years ago he started saying that eventually figures would have to be released on how many crimes were committed by foreign nationals.

Every single night across the counties of Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire & Oxfordshire the jails were full of foreign nationals. He said very rarely did they arrest a British person and even then it was usually on a weekend for a really low level drunk and disorderly. It was a huge topic of conversation amongst officers. Most of the people couldn’t speak English and he said the forces were spending a fortune on translators. As the years went by things got worse and worse.

The migrant hotels were always on fire with residents constantly stabbing eachother. He said it literally was every, single night.

Facts and stats are not racist to those who think they are.

Oh it’s possible. Every crime recorded gives the ethnicity and sex of the people involved. The police systems show it

What period of time was this over? In the last couple of years or longer ago?

MandingoAteMyBaby · Today 18:35

They should also publish if crimes are committed by the poor, the age, and the level of formal education of the criminal.

It matters much more than race.

And you’ll see how the race circle of the venn diagram often overlaps with poverty / youth / lack of education.

It’s just that people prefer to pin the reasons on race, not the real issues.

HoppityBun · Today 18:36

It’s an appeal by the MoJ against a ruling of the Information Commissioner’s Office that the government must publish criminal conviction data broken down by nationality. I haven’t seen anything limiting it to sex crime data. The appeal seems to be on the basis of cost and complexity, whereas the IOC accepted it would be both costly and complex but ruled that those are not sufficient reasons.

Auspiciousminds · Today 18:36

Fabiansrule · Today 16:43

It has been collected. You are incorrect. Not by the government but by the police, as it happens. the MoJ holds all the data. It's about publishing it - not collecting it. Keep up.

If the data were to be published then I think they should also publish the same data for white British males. Why would you just want to know the data for immigrants if you truly care about women and children?

NeverDropYourMooncup · Today 18:39

Is somebody pissed off that they couldn't kick off about the data on asylum, visas, massive progress on reducing the inherited applications backlog and everything else that was released yesterday, by any chance?

I know people say you should take a day off sometimes, but it's pretty noticeable that for one day, there was absolutely nothing on here.

pinkstripeycat · Today 18:26

I never said it was impossible. I said it was an almighty task. Different police forces use incompatible systems.

And all ethnicities, nationalities, or whatever data used would probably need to be reported, not just foreign ones.

Recent Tory governments were hugely anti-immigrant. Have you considered the possibility that they knew this task wouldn’t be worth the effort, because the data will not give those most keen to see it what they hope for?

Much like the data I cited above for those convicted of terrorist offences. No one appreciated that. It couldn’t possibly have had anything to do with the fact that the typical imprisoned terrorist is White British, could it?
