AIBU to think migrant sex crime data should be published? And to wonder why Labour are blocking the release of that data?

Labour Blocks Release of Migrant Crime Data

'Victims of serious crimes and their families have joined forces to demand that the Labour government publish detailed data on offences committed by foreign nationals, accusing ministers of withholding information that is “clearly and legitimately in the public interest”.

Among the signatories are victims of high-profile sexual offences and families of murder victims. One signatory is a 14-year-old victim of a sexual assault in Epping allegedly committed by an illegal immigrant, in the same Essex town where asylum seekers were housed at the controversial Bell Hotel.
Fiona Goddard, a survivor of rape-gang grooming who has campaigned publicly about her experiences, has also signed the letter.

Eight relatives of Rhiannon Whyte, a hotel worker murdered by a Sudanese national, are also among those backing the demand.'

They've released a leaflet for asylum seekers/migrants telling them that sexually harassing, raping people etc, isn't what we do in the UK. I cannot believe that on one hand this pamphlet is released yet they are refusing to release sexually motivated crime figures.

Even Matthew Syed who reports for The Times and is very far from the right, criticised the government over the publishing of this leaflet. If we don't have a problem with migrant sex crime why do they need a leaflet.

I would have thought it was fairly obvious - to avoid stupid, vigilante behaviour by racists.

I knew someone would pipe up with the racism card.

How is it racism exactly, to want to know TRUE figures. How is it racism to want to keep the women/men and children of this country safe from these criminals being allowed in to our country.

I think OP, it’s because they dont want us to know the true extent of it.

Holeymoley28 · Today 16:54

By not releasing it makes it look like it will be so high that they are protecting them rather than their citizens.

That will anger the very people who they claim they need to hide the stats from and will lead to an increase in votes for reform and restore and any party who claim they will release the info.

Release all the stats.

By nationality, by immigration status.
Male, female, trans identifying.
By age.
Religion.

All of it.

BIWI · Today 16:54

@LiuBei

You think that preventing people from hearing true facts prevents racist behaviour

Why not, then, ask for data re sex crimes committed by ALL people? Not just migrants. What is the agenda here, do you think? Why does the OP (and others) not seem bothered by the lack of that data?

BIWI · Today 16:56

@Thelonelyshrew

How is it racism exactly, to want to know TRUE figures. How is it racism to want to keep the women/men and children of this country safe from these criminals being allowed in to our country.

But the OP isn't asking for TRUE figures. Because TRUE figures would show sex crimes being committed by ALL people.

Using the phrase "racism card" says a little about a person.

Were you demanding release of the data when the Tories were in charge?

poetryandwine · Today 16:57

PinkFrogss · Today 16:46

Yes, the OP and the linked article certainly give the impression that the data is collected but labour is just stopping it from being published.

The article linked in the article that gives a 34% figure for sexual assaults committed by foreign nationals, but the data is actually “up to 34%” as it assumes that all convictions where the nationality is unknown is a foreign nationality. It also ignores the obvious fact that as the data is based on convictions it’s inherently useless when looking to find out more about sex crimes committed.

Well OP was right that for ages and ages the data have been collected but not published. There are several reasons for this.

I think the main one is that rejigging Civil Service data systems is an incredible effort. HMG data sets are a mess.

Every time someone convinces gullible politicians modernisation is easy, HMG gets tied into a contract for billions of £££ that never results in completion. The last thing we need right now is another one.

On the grounds of efficiency and economics alone, this time of fiscal hardship is the wrong time to pursue this.

Your point about offences vs convictions is excellent. Over 85% of sex offences are committed by someone known to the victim. These are the hardest to prosecute.

Fabiansrule · Today 16:37

Really? What about the women and children at higher risk?

And men, They have been victims of attacks too; yes the majority are women and children, but all attacks are horrendous. And the number of people who have said awful things about Rhiannon Whyte's mum is terrible, as if she should just shut up because a minority of people born here have been criminals.

I wish women put the same energy into this anti migrants crimes against women as they should to towards the crimes against women caused by white British males.

OF course they do, dont be ridiculous.

Well, if it supports the evidence of our eyes then it is data that can be used to argue for secure detainment of unknown unvetted men who need a leaflet to tell them not to rape.

The risk to women is exactly the same regardless of the colour and race of the perpetrator.

I’m not sure we even collect that data. I did listen to a podcast where it was mentioned that Germany does collect that data and figures released showed migrants from specific countries were committing such offences at 17 times the rate of the native population.

The German police statistics tell a different story. The BKA (Federal Criminal Police) report that a settled immigrant is 2.5 to 3 times more likely than a native German to be accused of a sex crime by the victim. An asylum seeker or other short term immigrant is 3 to 4 times more likely.

This strongly suggests that short term immigrants do, on the whole, commit more sex offences than settled immigrants. However, people are notoriously reluctant to accuse assailants they know, particularly those they are in a relationship with - sex crimes by known assailants are severely under-reported. Sex crimes by strangers, particularly strangers with dark skin, are much less under- reported.

When one considers the reporting problem, it is difficult to draw valid conclusions about who is committing sex crimes in Germany, except for what I said above. And yes, I think we all know about the 2015-16 New Year’s Eve mass assault. In consequence Germany made deportations easier, which is fine with me.,

So this exact bit her "keep the women/men and children of this country safe from these criminals being allowed in to our country" shows up your biased view already. And you haven't even seen the data but already assume what it will show based on your biases. You believe all immigrants are criminals, and perhaps, not even that all of them are criminals but specifically those from certain countries and of certain faith. And that is the problematic bit - making an assumption and hoping the data will support it rather than looking objectively at the data and making a decision from there.

How about we keep women, men and children from ALL criminals in this country? Both foreign and domestic. So yes, let's see the data. But ALL data. Not just data related to a specific population that we collectively decided is problematic.

I don’t need data to tell me that violence against women is rife and every perpetrator is male. That’s all I need to know.

Namenamchange · Today 17:18

Either the data shows a problem or it doesn’t. Either way, thw data should be made available to the public, no one should have the right to withhold that data.
It stops debate and education.

No data should be withheld in a democracy, it’s our information.

TemperanceWest · Today 17:19

Paganpentacle · Today 17:12

Well, if it supports the evidence of our eyes then it is data that can be used to argue for secure detainment of unknown unvetted men who need a leaflet to tell them not to rape.

Well it will probably show that a very small percentage of asylum seekers commit these crimes. I am not sure that is an argument to detain them all and it wouldn't be legal I don't think?

A few posters have said this type of data is published in other countries. How have they used the data to reduce risk to their citizens?

ThatBreezyScroller · Today 17:24

Yes definitely!

There is a myth that immigrants are have a higher risk of SA someone and so many people naively believe that the reason we don’t release the data is because they don’t want people knowing this - which is obviously complete BS.

I think it would be important to have this data to show people that they are not at a higher risk of SA someone.

With children, the highest risk is someone close to home.
It’s so important that people don’t forget this.

But would people even listen or would they still use it as an excuse to be racist thugs.
Every single day there are multiple cases of women and children being raped but these men don’t bat an eyelid. The second that it’s an immigrant (or suspected immigrant) then all of a sudden they pretend to care.

OP’s request may not be legal. Publishing all the data on the ethnicities and nationalities of people jailed for sex offences would be, but that isn’t what she wants.

On the other thread @EasternStandard referred to, people were speculating about who is in jail for terrorist offences. I looked it up - these stats are public.

People were correct that the dominant religion is Muslim. However over 60% are British; the main race is White; and Arab/Middle Eastern is a small, single digit percentage. When I related these facts the silence was deafening.

I do not think most PP clamouring to know the details requested by OP necessarily want the full story. And that is before we deal with the under-reporting by known assailants, by far the majority of sexual offences.

The major issue as I understand it is that not all police forces collect/have collected the information and that tge data may be collected in different ways.

but the other issue is the violence we have seen in response to any suggestion of crime by migrants where innocent people are terrorised by vigilante groups and riots.

i think immigrants who commit crime should be considered for deportation for sure. But I am not sure release of potentially incomplete data is as useful as review of processes.
