To wonder if anyone has a normal, wholesome, monogamous relationship/marriage anymore

Was talking to some friends (unknown to each other) who seem really normal/wholesome types…no! They’ve either done, or are doing, the whole swinging/open marriage thing.

Obviously, fair play to them. But just wondering, are there people out there who have a nice, normal, wholesome (boring, I suppose) monogamous relationship/marriage? Especially those with kids.

I do get it and, if it works, why not. But I like to think that monogamy is the model most long term relationships follow? Or am I very naive?

Has anyone been with their partner for a long time and managed to not be unfaithful or sleep with other people in whatever context?

Why "fair play to them". This is not a normal loving relationship.

Boring what a dreadful way to describe a good marriage. Weirdo.

I'm happy to be "boring" if that's her definition

Tisfortired · 17/08/2026 18:43

All normal here so far! Been here with DH for 17 years.

I have come to learn that things can change quickly though so who knows what tomorrow will bring.

Bit of a sweeping generalisation..!

I would agree, but I am wholly correct. Honestly, the calibre of man you can acquire in Morocco as a Western woman is astonishing. Far better than what's on offer here, that's for sure. My friend who is in her 40's can pull handsome men half her age! And she's nothing special, hopefully she isn't on here reading right now lv ya really Susan Xx

mamaduckbone · 17/08/2026 19:50

Yep…24th wedding anniversary today, had a lovely day with my Dh (painting the front door!! We did go out for lunch though) and all very normal, monogamous and boring here!

I have no doubt that she can. For all the wrong reasons.

I’m 50 and boring. 30 yrs married this year.

however my friend is in the dating market again. Sounds like a nightmare. 50+ and she says all the guys are alll into anal from the first night, sending pics the lot.
she’s no prude and been around a lot! But even she is shocked by some of it.

LHP118 · 17/08/2026 20:05

Celebrating 25 years at the end of this month. He's a definite keeper. Not perfect. But perfect for me.

user1476613140 · 17/08/2026 20:14

Been together almost 22 years, married for almost 20 years. Happily married and neither of us have cheated on each other. Very much in love with each other❤️
4DC together with a healthy sex life. Too exciting as it is, no swinging required.

MandemChickenShop · 17/08/2026 20:16

it's 2026 babe, swinging is as natural as having a brew. apps and tech have changed the game and it's a fornicators nirvana.

Bringemout · 17/08/2026 20:19

Yup 40’s monogamous, normal family, wouldn’t have time for this and I bet it creates drama.

YouSawBrigadoon · 17/08/2026 20:19

Me! I’m very happily married and have been for 30 years. All our friends and siblings too.

Anarchy99 · 17/08/2026 20:20

Minasama · 17/08/2026 14:11

All very normal here, thank you.
I hear the 50+ dating scene is wild though, and plain normality is not a thing there.

I blame the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s. People in their mid to late teens were too scared to have wild sexual encounters so I guess they are making up for it now!

Blueuggboots · 17/08/2026 20:24

Totally monogamous, very happily married 11 years and together for 13, but known each other 20+ years.
Have no desire to sleep with other people.

HeyThereDelila · 17/08/2026 20:27

As far as I’m aware we’re very “normal”. No adultery or pornography to my knowledge, certainly no swinging 😂 shudders.

Married ten years, 2DC, together 17 years.

Cleo65 · 17/08/2026 14:17

It's not particularly cool to be 'normal' in today's crazy world - but I'm hoping it'll become fashionable again soon....

This.

pendatea · 17/08/2026 20:31

Everything is wholesome and monogamous in my relationship of 30 years although I've had more passes made at me in recent years in my 40's than I did in my 20's and 30's. I wasn't sure what that was about why I was suddenly so desired but perhaps wife swapping and so on is rife and people were testing the water to see if we'd be up for it? I am living a sheltered life perhaps in that respect and I have no plans to change it!

You could be right - my friend (she is 46) was married at 18. They got divorced when she was 42 and her now-boyfriend introduced her to swinging. She loves it!

I didn’t met DH until I was 31🤷🏼‍♀️

Beguiledbeehive · 18/08/2026 17:57

Me! I do… well I did… well I thought I did!

I was married until recently for 20 years and never was unfaithful in any capacity. I had thought my marriage was monogamous, but it turns out my husband had been anything but throughout the whole marriage and beyond. So what I thought was a ‘normal’ faithful marriage, was sadly not, I was just in the dark about it.

At least I can say I held up my end of the bargain, even if my C U Next Tuesday of a husband was a cheating arse hole.

Wiseonce · 18/08/2026 18:30

Together 10 years, adore my husband. 😊 No plans to ever swing or open the marriage or cheat. Can't see the point in marriage to be honest of you aren't going to be monogamous!

Disdo · 18/08/2026 18:34

Yes, been together for 24 years, married for 16 yrs, two kids. Both totally faithful to each other, best friends, still attracted to each other and totally in agreement that any other way of living seems like a lot of hard work. We have had our ups and downs but have always worked things out without the need to seek out excitement somewhere else.

Incredulousaboutlife · 17/08/2026 14:18

normal, wholesome (boring, I suppose) monogamous relationship/marriage
Why do you use the term boring for a type of relationship a lot of people would give their eye teeth for?
It's the same as the sneering use of the term vanilla sex.

I second this.

wellstopdoingitthen · 18/08/2026 18:54

Flying the flag for monogamy here 🥳

Still very much in love with my husband & I still get butterflies in my stomach when we’re together. No affairs or drama (a few heated rows then making up). Two adult dc.

We only dated for 6 months before we got married 33 years ago. ❤️

I don’t know anyone in my friendship group who has an open marriage or is having an affair (but they wouldn’t necessarily tell me 🤷‍♀️).

Jaxhog · 18/08/2026 18:56

We have a perfectly happy, monogamous marriage. As do many of our friends. I think the 'abnormal' ones get a lot more air-time.

IButtleSir · 18/08/2026 18:57

I'm a boring lesbian in my thirties married to another boring lesbian in her thirties- we've been together ten years and hate most other people, so are very unlikely to seek out anyone else!
