Oh yes. But by acident the sun was so bright just over my fence and I looked up to see my cat and looked strait at sun! The angle was just wrong for coming out of the back door. Trying not to panic cause feel slight funny after!

Did it affect your spelling?

I peeked at the eclipse in 1999 sat next to my lovely Nanna in her beautiful garden and she hit me with her fan and told me I'd go blind and to use my eclipse box, I peeked again now in 2026 and promptly burst into tears because she wasn't here to do it again. So now I don't know if I have eye damage or just too many emotions.

Just you wait till you're blind and the Triffids turn up, then you'll be sorry..

I was just going to mention The Triffids !🤣

Gowlett · 12/08/2026 20:19

I squinted a few times, no harm done!

PeasOff · 12/08/2026 19:53

Accidentally glimpsed it while trying to line up my piece of cardboard with a hole in it 🙃

The two blokes I was speaking to are going to be fucked though as they'd been full on staring at the sun for 20 mins waiting for the eclipse and continued to do so during the eclipse. I said they'll need a trip to the optician's soon 😂

I don’t think they will be able to find it 😳

Hohumbrumbrum · 12/08/2026 20:21

Ok, so after the 1999 eclipse that millions of us (tens of millions...) of us watched in the UK, 70 people reported vision difficulties.

Of those 60% had viewed it for longer than a minute. I can't find details on how long the other 40% watched it for, but I'm betting that given it was just 70 people in total, and the amount of people that in reality take a glimpse (see this thread alone), the likelihood of damage from a fleeing glance is low.

I'm missing DH terribly. He would have been over the moon ...

We travelled to see an eclipse in 2017 and I recently found the glasses he bought all of us. Could I find them this week? Of course not! But he would have known right where they were and would have been prepping for weeks.

And he was always hoping for global warming b/c he wanted hotter summers ...

Jellybunny98 · 12/08/2026 20:22

My husband did and now is panicking😂 luckily we already have 2 Labrador’s so perhaps tomorrow will be spent teaching them some new tricks!

Shatteredallthetimelately · 12/08/2026 20:22

I'll have to confess that I just couldn't muster up any motivation to even be bothered with it all....so no peeking in any form here.

YourLoftyCyanZebra · 12/08/2026 20:23

It's the odd but lovely moments that catch us off guard, isn't it? You will find them when you least expect it!

There’s going to be a meteor shower tonight apparently!

Oh wow I didn’t realise!! It feels like only last week we had the last meteor shower! So close together!

I was driving and turned a corner into the sun. I had my sunglasses on and the sun visors down in the car but I still got some glare, though I didn't look straight at it. I had a big panic when I got home though as when I took my sunglasses off and put my normal glasses back on I noticed the vision in my right eye was really blurry. I was sure I'd fried my retina. Fortunately once I removed my glasses and wiped the greasy thumb print off the lens I seem to be cured!

I did similar driving home with sunglasses on and also got a bit worried, but is it any different to catching sight of the sun when driving home any other night?! Because I don’t usually worry or care!
