This was all we could see there were lower dark clouds and then thick upper clouds covering the sun the whole time.

Who peeked?
JohnBullshit · 12/08/2026 20:56

I didn't peek, and without any special glasses I couldn't see much happening either. Odd, really. I go for a walk about that time most evenings, if it's not too hot, and while I avoid looking directly at the sun, I don't normally worry about it. Now I've got a psychosomatic headache and I swear my bloody eyelashes are sweating. Nothing to do with the stupidly hot day we've had here.

WoollyRosebud · 12/08/2026 20:56

I loved it. Fair number of people where I was who passed round glasses for those without them. One person had brought a colander with them and there were several pinhole cameras. There was a nice atmosphere and all very friendly

Bridesmaidorexfriend · 12/08/2026 20:56

I had some glasses, which I’m very worried weren’t strong enough. Took this photo through the glasses though

@JohnBullshit Yeah I'm sure I have a weird sensation in my left eye, never mind that I have chronic migraine and this is the norm for me!

There was a guy in the news who used one of those in ‘99 and permanently damaged his eyes

We used this same screen in 1999 and are fine thanks. My DH was a welder, and this screen more than meets the necessary standards for safe viewing.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 12/08/2026 20:39

I'm never risking my eyesight, it's far too precious. I have what is called narrow angles in my eyes, which means the pressure can build up if the angles close completely (called an angle closure attack). The angles help to drain away the optical fluid and if it isn't draining away, it can cause damage to the optic nerve from the pressure.

Since having had a taste of what optic nerve damage is before I had a laser iridotomy procedure, I value my sight especially more now.

I was so hoping to hear about your health problems.

They were making the valid point that anyone would need to be a complete moron to risk their eyesight through their own stupidity

Empress13 · 12/08/2026 21:00

disappointing tbh

Ever heard of the speed of light?

clue. It’s a bit faster than Usain Bolt

671 million mph

186.282 mps

How did you get all the way through typing that and pressing post without wishing you were a different sort of person.

Krautie · 12/08/2026 21:04

I just read an American article saying that remarkably few people get retina damage after an eclipse which is good as I peeked, too

fivepenny · 12/08/2026 21:04

Fingers crossed for everyone, check in tomorrow and let me know if you're all still ok!

Serious question - is the damage immediate or does it show up in the future?

I peaked by accident when my solar glasses fell off. I was wearing them over my prescription sunglasses but even then, I had flashing lights when I closed my eyes afterwards. They feel sore now but I'm very tired and my eyes often get sore in bright light.

BeeCucumber · 12/08/2026 21:08

I just looked at the sky - not even in the direction of the sun - as I closed the curtains and my eyes hurt!

It’s certainly not recommended!

I'm glad you said this, my neighbour lent me one and I was panicking for a while reading some of the other comments.

I only looked for a couple of seconds and I also had sunglasses on so I think I'd be very unlucky if there was any damage.

You'll be fine. Lots of negativity on here. We checked the level of protection and it was perfectly safe.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 12/08/2026 21:14

Luckily when Triffids do come my barky BT will alert me to their presence. Maybe I can chuck the colander ( which carried for 15 minutes each way to our local hill but didn’t have a bloody clue what to do with when I got there so looked a bit daft) in the general direction of their shuffle and I’ll be ok.
