Yes, ThreadGuardDog, an annular eclipse is the “ring of fire”. There was one visible from Scotland some years ago.

I found the 90% eclipse rather wonderful. I was equipped with glasses so I could see the bite sinisterly being taken out of the sun, and then the tiny sliver that remained. The light changed, the temperature dropped and the birds did go quiet.
We went up to one of the higher hills around here to view it because the info I got suggested that it would be well to be able to see the western horizon. It turned out quite festive, as there was a sprinkling of vehicles all the way down, with people in camping chairs with picnics and wine and whatnot.

Anyway, with the continuing theme of underwhelming astronomical events, I think I am going to try to watch the Persieds tonight.

It's boiling hot here and the skys are clear. Apparently the moon is not around either so seems like a great opportunity.

The media liked the fact that nobody was discussing the important things. They like a distraction eclipse and a few cereal boxes.

They hype it all up so much. It is an amazing event, but having four reporters out asking people what they think of it all is a bit much.

Think the poster meant ones that will happen over the UK. There’s usually a total eclipse somewhere in the world every 12-18 months but most of them occur over oceans/uninhabited areas.

As another poster pointed out to me, Gibraltar gets one next August - jammy Spain! After that I looked it up and the next Total Eclipse to cross anywhere in Europe will be Spain, again, in 2053. There is a partial eclipse in 2036 that we’ll see in the UK.

Me too. I had hoped a partial covering of the damn thing might cool things briefly, but we didn’t even get that!

It was a total non event here, not like the last one when everything went a special kind of dark and the birds fell silent.
