To find this a really snobby comment from neighbour?

We moved our motor home out into the street earlier so we (DH, DD and I) could clean it.

A woman walked past with a child who made a comment, something innocuous about it being quite big.

The woman said ‘your lucky you never have to go in one of them and we can go abroad’.

I thought - you cheeky cow. We have had some great trips away over the years, and go abroad at times too. I wish I said something to her now!

Ghastly they lower the tone of the neighbourhood

That's interesting. Why do you think that?

bowling47 · 12/08/2026 09:55

100% I would have called her out on it. No way I would have let that comment slide.

“sorry, what do you mean by that?”
”wow, how rude!!!”
”come here you little f$€% b@*!£ and say that to my face” 😆😆😆😆

probably the second one but if I was on my period deffo the last

Dh has been watching a couple on YouTube who have a motorhome and they look to have a brilliant time. They go all over the UK and have had some trips abroad. It wouldn't do for me as I couldn't get up into the bed but it's great watching them and seeing all the places they can just stop and look at whatever they want.

Our bed is normal (knee) height. Lots of less able people have a camper/motorhome

Campervanadventures · 12/08/2026 10:31

We picked up our (third) campervan in June, packed it up and left London for Ireland where we have been ever since. We are about half way around the Wild Atlantic Way (2000 kms so far) and it has been fabulous, something I dreamed about when I was working. Currently laid out watching the news after breakfast, and checking maps/guide books for where we go next and deciding if dinner is in or out tonight. What a life!!! When we return to London it will be a quick turnaround and head off for Spain via France for 3 months. We have been to Poland, Croatia, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Germany, Morocco, Portugal, Greece etc etc some multiple times all in the last 10 years. Ok so it doesn’t appeal to some people but they are definitely in the minority.

AnitaCam · 12/08/2026 10:34

I don’t think it’s “snobby” whatever that truly means. I think she doesn’t like campervans. Which is fine, surely.

Gossipisgood · 12/08/2026 10:58

How does she know you don't drive to a holiday destination abroad? Or go touring in different countries? We've had some of our best holidays in caravans in the UK. Some people don't realise it's not where you go on holiday it's who you go with & the memories you make that you remember for life.

Loftyquail · 12/08/2026 11:05

I'm curious about why it's on the road though, where do you keep it ?

Yes, it was a tactless thing to say to a child, there wasn't any 'going abroad' when I was growing up !.......the child is probably spoilt, you may never see her again, don't look at her if she happens to walk past in the future, don't dwell on her words, put it behind you, and just think of the lovely holidays you've had, and are going to have in your motorhome......😊

KatyJ89 · 12/08/2026 15:25

I don't know why people still haven't learnt yet that we all enjoy different things and to keep their mouths shut! You did the right thing not saying anything, commenting on her weight would have made you worse than her.

Tessasanderson · 12/08/2026 15:56

Some people like campervans. Some people dont.

This person obviously doesnt like them and commented as such. A bit like people who dont like cats or dont like dogs would comment that it must be horrible picking up the dog shit or clearing the litter tray up. Its not nasty, its just people are able to pick and chose what they do and dont like.

I had a campervan years ago but sold it (With tears in my eyes) because all the covid wankers spoiled it.

Maybe to you. Not to rest of us who have to be stuck behind you in traffic....

I agree. My idea of hell. But I do keep my opinions to myself !!

ViciousCurrentBun · 12/08/2026 16:17

@Campervanadventures we are off to Ireland ourselves next week, first trip there. Any major tips on sites or anything at all? We are there for 6 weeks.

Boomer55 · 12/08/2026 16:21

Not my thing, but I wouldn’t have said anything. It was rude of her.

Namechangingregularly · 12/08/2026 16:22

Jiuenk · 10/08/2026 21:24

God, I wish I said something now. DH suggested ‘you could do with a walking holiday in the English countryside rather than gobbling a TUI all inclusive buffet!’ - she is slightly robust in size.

Now you’re being the horrible one.

stop worrying about what other people say, do and eat.

your joy will be sucked away

no need for you to have batted an eyelid at her comment

WildGarlicSoup · 12/08/2026 16:25

Camper vans can go abroad.

But, you always think of things you could have said after the event.

Typical 'Green Eyed Monster' comment from her.

This is crazy! We have a campervan and go away lots. We also go abroad plenty. Silly lady. We have had some amazing trips in the campervan

I’m re-thinking my retirement and debating how fab it would be to tour round Europe in a campervan!

hahabahbag · 12/08/2026 16:35

To eaches own, i personally don’t think they should be parked on public roads because they are wider than cars, there’s one parked near me and it obscures vision on a corner and affects access for emergency vehicles, been there over a week. Should be a law that if you own one you need appropriate parking and an additional space not putting your car on the street (and the same for all other households with more than 2 vehicles

MalificentOne · 12/08/2026 16:56

That kind of dig says more about her than you, so I wouldn't waste too much energy on it, but I get why it's needling you now you've had time to think about it because those little digs so often land better in hindsight than in the moment. If you wanted a line for next time without being rude back, something breezy like oh we love it, best of both worlds really would probably needle her more than any comeback, since it shows it hasn't bothered you at all, but honestly you don't owe her an explanation of your holidays or your choices either way.

She's jealous... camping and caravaning are the BEST holidays according to most children... also the most expensive

Wtf... are you unwell...??

MandemChickenShop · 13/08/2026 00:16

nasty from your Husband and you lack awareness repeating it here.

sounds like a lighthearted flippant jokey comment to her child, and certainly not a dig at you.

be happy you have a motorhome and try to find a thicker skin.

AlwaysExtraHot · 15/08/2026 17:53

Rachelshair · 10/08/2026 21:03

Maybe she's just not a fan of motorhomes? I wouldn't take it personally but yes it is rude to say it in earshot.

and we can go abroad’. strongly suggests she didn't mean that.

MellowPinkBee · 15/08/2026 20:59

When trying to sell a property when there is a motor home on the road, 15-20% below market value every time!!!

Aslana · 15/08/2026 21:08

What a silly woman. Don't spend any more time thinking about her!

Nettie1964 · 15/08/2026 23:41

Dont take it to heart, people are pathetic. I wish I had one.
