To find this a really snobby comment from neighbour?

We moved our motor home out into the street earlier so we (DH, DD and I) could clean it.

A woman walked past with a child who made a comment, something innocuous about it being quite big.

The woman said ‘your lucky you never have to go in one of them and we can go abroad’.

I thought - you cheeky cow. We have had some great trips away over the years, and go abroad at times too. I wish I said something to her now!

It’s rude to say it in your ear shot but it’s what most people think.

Wetblanket78 · 10/08/2026 22:27

She's probably just jealous plus people go abroad with their motorhomes no packing everything into cases just load it all in and go. I would love a motorhome.

ThatJadeLion · 10/08/2026 21:19

It's jealousy!!

It's envy!

Baileyss · 10/08/2026 22:30

I’d hate to stay in a caravan, but I would never say anything so rude.

malware · 10/08/2026 22:30

You both sound pretty mean. I am glad I don't live down your road.

She obviously has no idea how expensive motorhomes are!

Was going to say! A week in the costa del sol is a lot cheaper 😂

Maybe she has multiple holidays a year and spends 30k on each.

This!!

sesquipedalian · 10/08/2026 21:05

OP, my DB has one, and guess what? He and his DW go abroad in it. Just ignore sad, ignorant passer-by - she’s probably jealous.

I bet she isn’t.

Also a thing being expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it is good, does it?

Possibly they might be fun as a one off holiday but the thought of having a second home on wheels is a no from me.

Tahlbias · 10/08/2026 22:36

I love our campervan! We only bought another one a month ago and have had some amazing times in ours and met some amazing people! Plus, we are going abroad for Christmas 🤣

Pssedoffathis · 10/08/2026 22:40

Do you think she might have just said the first thing that popped into her head so she doesn’t have to listen to her child bang on about wanting to get a motorhome. It sounds like something I might say to shut my child down. Like when they want an ice cream from the park cafe and I tell them it’s really bad ice cream and tastes disgusting (but really it’s because I don’t want them to have an ice cream before dinner)
I would think it’s probably something like this rather than a personal dig at you.

TheyGrewUp · 10/08/2026 22:41

DH and I have on our bucket list, tpuring the coastline of the UK in camper van. Almost retired now.

Great, so presumably you would not get outraged when a random woman responded to a child's comment about how big your motor home is by saying, "hey, you're lucky we don't stay in one of those but go on holiday abroad" offenssive because who cares what a random woman decided - for reasons unknown - to say that to a child. You love your campervan, you get joy from it, who cares what others might say to a wide-eyed child?

pinkpony88 · 10/08/2026 22:45

We go abroad several times a year but I would still say we couldn’t afford a motor home! She obviously has no idea! 🤷‍♀️

TVDinnerandwine · 10/08/2026 22:45

My friend has just spent £150k on theirs 😱 She has taken it abroad too!

Sasha07 · 10/08/2026 22:46

I get a pang when I see people with motorhomes. We get them a lot in my little seaside, tourist area. I actually live in the place they're probably paying a lot to visit .. but I've never seen the sun setting over the sea while lying in bed, like they will be doing. DH has agreed we can get one when the house is paid off 😁

Don't give her a second thought OP. I was working as a Centerparcs cleaner a few years back and some arrogant parents were telling their young child to shout 'make sure you do a good job!' like I was their personal skivvy! Wasn't even theirs that I was cleaning! Happy people don't feel the need to talk down to others, whatever makes them feel good, eh. I actually enjoyed cleaning 😁 and you enjoy your campervan so it literally doesn't matter what others think about you.

Calliopespa · 10/08/2026 22:49

It was rude but I'd rather someone insulted my motorhome than my body.

Nsky62 · 10/08/2026 22:50

Rachelshair · 10/08/2026 21:03

Maybe she's just not a fan of motorhomes? I wouldn't take it personally but yes it is rude to say it in earshot.

Not my idea of fun, I wouldn’t be that unkind

Thegirlwhowent · 10/08/2026 22:54

I'd say it more like ignorance than snobbishness.

DontTeaseMyDog · 10/08/2026 22:56

Jiuenk · 10/08/2026 21:24

God, I wish I said something now. DH suggested ‘you could do with a walking holiday in the English countryside rather than gobbling a TUI all inclusive buffet!’ - she is slightly robust in size.

Well that's also nasty.

Why are you even offended? Owning a motorhome/caravan even a tent is a luxury anyway. How lovely to always have the options opened. My neighbours have one and they have a big roof that opens up and they go away like every other weekend and I'm always jealous watching them pack it all in - love that for them.

Picking on someones looks or size makes you no better really

QueenOfHiraeth · 10/08/2026 22:57

A campervan is my idea of hell but even I agree her comment is not nice.
Your husband's comment, however, is even nastier and there is no excuse for sinking to personal insults, he does not come out of that well and nor do you if you think that funny

Tahlbias · 10/08/2026 23:05

Joliefolie · 10/08/2026 22:42

You love your campervan, you get joy from it, who cares what others might say to a wide-eyed child?

So presumably you're presuming that I wouldn't be outraged?
You are quite unique aren't you?
Your presumptuous attitude may take you far in life. Or possibly drive you insane...maybe you already are insane and believe you can read people's minds and predict how they may react in a situation without knowing them?!
On this occasion your presumption is correct, it really wouldn't bother me if I heard a comment like that. That is one persons opinion. Why should I let another persons opinion outrage me. Life is way too short to take notice.
Now, you keep being you, continue to be outraged by others opinions and I sincerely hope your presumptuous attitude serves you well. 😚

Christ0nABike · 10/08/2026 23:11

Obviously the next step is to park it right outside her house

champagneplanet · 10/08/2026 23:12

Exactly the type of person we can avoid while camping OP! She clearly hasn’t looked into the cost of tenting/caravanning/motorhoming recently! Don’t tell her how much fun it is though as she’s not welcome Smile

Delilah26 · 10/08/2026 23:13

People who actually have money are rarely so pathetically eager to announce it. And comparing yourself to a total stranger to try to feel good about your life certainly doesn't scream "great life" to me. She sounds like a right tool.
