To find this a really snobby comment from neighbour?

We moved our motor home out into the street earlier so we (DH, DD and I) could clean it.

A woman walked past with a child who made a comment, something innocuous about it being quite big.

The woman said ‘your lucky you never have to go in one of them and we can go abroad’.

I thought - you cheeky cow. We have had some great trips away over the years, and go abroad at times too. I wish I said something to her now!

I mean, I don't want a holiday in a motor home either to be fair. She was being a twat, but I don't see why you would care. What would be the point of saying anything? I make it a rule not to be offended by anyone who's opinion I don't value.

But I would also say its quite a dumb comment as I think holiday's abroad are more accessible to the average person than motor home ownership!

IStillHearTheWaves · 11/08/2026 18:10

What an ignorant arse, I'm cringing for her.

Snufkin88 · 11/08/2026 18:16

I’d love a motor home . They are actually very expensive what is she on about

Ewock · 11/08/2026 18:18

Would love a motorhome but can't afford it. We love camping as a family and my kids ask to do that several times a year. We also go on holidays where we rent a house for a week and have been abroad but they love camping. I've never understood why holidays are such a bone of contention for some people. I have friends who tell me its not a holiday unless its an all inclusive abroad. I dont get why!
Everyone goes on the holidays they enjoy and can afford.

IDrinkTeaAllTheTime · 11/08/2026 18:21

Poor thing is obviously a bit simple and doesn’t realise you can have a motorhome and go abroad.

God, I wish I said something now. DH suggested ‘you could do with a walking holiday in the English countryside rather than gobbling a TUI all inclusive buffet!’ - she is slightly robust in size.

😂😅😂

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 11/08/2026 18:27

What a twat. My dad used to take us camping in a tent once a year to give my mum a break and he would intentionally make us slum it, so as he pulled in the driveway he could say (every time without fail) “are yous not glad you don’t have to live in a tent?” Maybe her camping experiences are more akin to mine and that’s why she thinks that, though back in those days I’d have given my right arm for a caravan.

Nannylovesshopping · 11/08/2026 18:39

Sometimes I think a straightforward fairly quietly, fuck off, covers most arsehole comments…

AuntieBiotics · 11/08/2026 18:44

I'd rather stay at home than do any sort of camping or holiday in a motorhome/caravan but wouldn't be as crass to say that out loud in public, in earshot of a motorhome owner.

Oldmamabear · 11/08/2026 18:46

Ha!! You cant educate the world so why worry about correcting an ignorant neighbors comment? Its just a momentary irritation.

One of my neighbour's once stopped me to say hello to my lurcher dog and asked questions about his breed. As I walked off I heard his wife/partner/whoever she was saying she wished he wouldnt get talking to 'dog walking types' lol!!! The queen was a dog walking type....ignorance is everywhere. X

Haha that’s so funny 😆 you’re a bad influence distracting him with your dog walking ways.

@Jiuenk

As a former US RVer, whenever someone would pull a face and make a remark like "Oh, I would never RV" or such I usually just said "Horses for courses" and thought silently "Good, more campsites for us and you'd probably suck as 'next door neighbours' in a campground/RV park anyway".

A lot of people simply don't get how fun RVing is and the benefits of 'taking your house with you'. It's pretty great to 'sleep in your own bed' no matter where you are.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 11/08/2026 18:50

Good job she doesnt live in my block of flats.

Next ro our communal garden. Over the fence. We have a group of Irish Travellers in 12 motorhomes who have set up a site on the car park of a public park car park six weeks ago.

Plus they have a 24:hour non stop running generator. The local council has given them 8 weeka to stay there on Hunan Rights and Welfare Grounds

Speedygonzales78 · 11/08/2026 18:53

My parents had a touring caravan and after I left home they bought a motor home, we went to Germany 7 times in the caravan ( I was learning German at school) and my parents went all over Europe in their motor home! She obviously has no idea what a,motor home is for!

Mamascoven · 11/08/2026 18:57

Me and my dh have a caravan at a very popular seaside resort on the east coast that alot of people suspect only poor people go but I don't think people understand how much it actually costs!

Susan7654 · 11/08/2026 18:58

Comeback " its because you cant afford one ".

Ladymuffins · 11/08/2026 18:59

When I was younger, my family moved to a bigger house in a fairly nice neighbourhood.

A lady walking by (we could hear her through the fence) was saying to her friend "I'd reject a house like this even if given to me for free. So much to clean!!". We laughed about it for years!

Same energy as the lady OP posted about.

halfpastten · 11/08/2026 19:03

As a campervan owner I would just laugh. It's not snobby, its just a totally different worldview. Of course a motor home costs more than a holiday abroad, but for a lot of people it's like camping and unthinkable. I have friends and family who think like that, I am never offended as it's horses for courses and I feel the same about a package holiday to Malaga or a trip to Vegas. Vive la difference and smile at your luck to have what you want.

Well that's completely unnecessary and says more about you and your dh. She was rude but that's low

Blades2 · 11/08/2026 19:23

Not everyone enjoys motor homes. But yeah, she was rude for saying it out loud.

MrsMillyFluff · 11/08/2026 19:26

Her loss! I'd love a motorhome as opposed to holidays abroad but dh won't entertain the idea ( my fault really as I can't drive)

Screamingabdabz · 11/08/2026 19:27

So she was a dick, but your husband is an even bigger dick by making some derogatory misogynist comment so… 🤷🏻‍♀️

lazyarse123 · 10/08/2026 21:39

Dh has been watching a couple on YouTube who have a motorhome and they look to have a brilliant time. They go all over the UK and have had some trips abroad. It wouldn't do for me as I couldn't get up into the bed but it's great watching them and seeing all the places they can just stop and look at whatever they want.

My parents have one. They can't climb into the bed up top, but the sofas can turn into beds 😁 when I was little I slept on a shelf, good times 🤣

Pedallleur · 11/08/2026 19:29

You haven't given any indication as to the size, age or approximate value of your motorhome nor the generation the 'woman' belonged to but going on personal experience and knowledge of these things, I would hazard a guess that those remarks were not just 'snobby' but were also downright ignorant and presumptive! 🙄
They were possibly based on childhood memories of campsite holidays as a child when motorhomes and caravans etc were not nearly as luxurious or expensive as they are now and were indeed seen as the 'lower end' of the holiday experience for many! 🙁
