To find this a really snobby comment from neighbour?

We moved our motor home out into the street earlier so we (DH, DD and I) could clean it.

A woman walked past with a child who made a comment, something innocuous about it being quite big.

The woman said ‘your lucky you never have to go in one of them and we can go abroad’.

I thought - you cheeky cow. We have had some great trips away over the years, and go abroad at times too. I wish I said something to her now!

I have relatives like this! They practically keel over at the thought of anything like tenting and motorhoming (my family do those things as well as the abroad holidays, if that matters).
I know this will sound odd, because motorhomes aren’t exactly scary, but perhaps she’s scared of the idea? My relatives are like that, anything that stretches their comfort zone even the slightest is scary to them.

busymomtoone · 11/08/2026 20:07

Speaking as someone fortunate enough to have had lots of lovely foreign holidays/ travel , big would absolutely LOVE a motor home, I absolutely guarantee that she said this out of jealousy or spite!!

LyssaMoon · 11/08/2026 20:11

I don't hold my tongue and would of called her a sad Muppet.

I don't have a large motorhome but we got a Marco polo this year and love it!! And we have driven across Europe with it and presently in Albania. It also didn't stop us staying in a lovely Italian Villa for a week or stopping at a nice Croatian hotel either.

But having the van means we no longer have to plan ahead.... We can just drop everything and get away when ever we're free. My daughter loves it.

WatchingTheStarsFromMyHammock · 11/08/2026 20:12

I would have burst out laughing if someone said that about my motorhome. Life is too short to be offended by a silly comment like that. It would have been tempting to point out that people do tend to do both! People who can afford motorhomes tend to be able to afford foreign travel as well

Mystery2345 · 11/08/2026 20:13

total snob and a miserable person clearly.

that said, I am glad I don't live next door to anyone with a motorhome or caravan in their driveway. As I find them eyesores. But that's nothing to do with the quality of a holiday people enjoy in one and I'd never say anything.

Tiggermad · 11/08/2026 20:18

Sounds like the green eyed monster.
Most people would love a motor home. And also duesnt mean you don’t go abroad just means you have a wonderful option for travel.
ignore her ignorance.

Zippedydoobaah · 11/08/2026 20:24

Very snobby and she must be very insecure to be saying such things to her DC. You would have been equally insecure to say something back, especially regarding her weight. Own hour campervan love!

myheadsjustmush · 11/08/2026 20:26

Well, I dread to think what sort of comments the poor child will be coming out with in a few years time, if they are being dragged up raised by that pompous woman!

Ignore the snooty so and so - and enjoy your motorhome!

TicTac80 · 11/08/2026 20:28

She sounded snobby and ignorant - we all know that motorhomes are NOT cheap and plenty go abroad!! I would have just ignored her. Enjoy your motorhome and all your travels. :)

OneNewLeader · 11/08/2026 20:44

A relative has a second/holiday home, I remember someone looking at him pityingly and saying ‘I’d hate to just holiday in one place’. He fulsomely agreed with her, and then said ‘I’d also hate to just have one home’. He’s like that.

blueshoes · 11/08/2026 20:50

Most people would love a motor home.

Er, no. But appreciate there are people who do.

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/08/2026 20:51

Simonjt · 10/08/2026 21:00

She obviously has no idea how expensive motorhomes are!

Hard disagree.

I think she knows exactly how much they cost and can't afford one so is making herself feel better about that by trying to make her kid think that only "poor" people have to have them.

PyongyangKipperbang · 11/08/2026 20:54

I wouldnt be confident driving a motor home, but I really want the new Citroen camper van. No bigger than a people carrier and has rave reviews. Sadly it is £50k+ , maybe one day!

FudgeFudy · 11/08/2026 21:13

I mean, I'd gladly personally burn every single motorhome in existence to the ground but it was still a weird thing to say.

StormGazing · 11/08/2026 21:14

Bloody hell they cost a fortune! My brother is a consultant doctor and on a high wage, no kids, much prefers to throw the bikes/surf boards and dog in the camper and flee for some much needed rest! It even made a good place to sleep during Covid when he had to stay on hospital campus … had his space and cooking facilities etc! I much prefer a hotel but I know that campers are really expensive as they’re so popular!

GingeAndTonic · 11/08/2026 21:16

Do you think she realises there are roads, you know, abroad? 😉

Yokodoko · 11/08/2026 21:50

Says more about her than you. In one ear and out the other, get scrubbing girl 🤗🤗

Neuronimo · 11/08/2026 21:53

It wouldn't be my cup of tea but I can see the appeal. It is very rude to make such a snobby comment and not good to teach her child to look down on other peoples' choices in life.

OpenGoose · 11/08/2026 21:59

I agree with her even if she was a bit rude, when I lived in a worse area despite everyone saying "They're so expensive she's just jealous!" the communal parking area had 5+ of the things in sub 60k houses and they look so janky parked up everywhere that the sight of them annoys me

Gribouille · 11/08/2026 22:00

It's funny how people who say things like that to try and prove how 'superior' they are only end up revealing themselves as rude and ignorant...

KLD89 · 11/08/2026 23:42

Owning a motorhome is on my bucket list. It’s genuinely the 1st thing I have always said I’d buy, if I won the lottery. To be able to go touring whenever we felt like it, up & down the UK & then on ferry’s overseas, is so so appealing. It’s home on the road. What’s not to love?
I have no idea what your neighbours problem is! 😂

MellowPinkBee · 12/08/2026 08:18

Ghastly they lower the tone of the neighbourhood

Leapfrog84 · 12/08/2026 08:35

Roseonthebalcony · 10/08/2026 21:12

It’s also kind of a shitty attitude to have and even worse to say it to the child who will end up the same. I would never say that to our child because I’m not raising a future arsehole.

This is so true.
In work with children and instead of them talking freely about their holidays, I’ve had to be really strict with what they can talk about as some of the comments they were making to each other were awful.
Things like, “Wow, your parents must have really rubbish jobs if you can only go to Disney in France. We go to Orlando every year.”
and
“Don’t lie. There’s no way you’ve not been abroad. Everyone does.”

Roopdedoop · 12/08/2026 08:46

We go on holiday abroad most years but I can’t afford a motorhome / caravan / campervan! What an idiot! Enjoy your travels 😍

Sallywag134 · 12/08/2026 08:46

I would have replied and said “we are lucky enough to afford both”!! Even if I couldn’t I would have said I could just to embarrass her after such a shitty comment 🤷🏻‍♀️
