To think the El Salvador prison idea is a brilliant one?

I usually steer clear of the news but caught this story earlier. What a brilliant idea - the prisons are overflowing and this would free up space and also save money.

Yes these uncosted and undetailed proposals always sound so simple.

Always with the easy solutions.

If I remember, Brexit was all going to be marvellous and solve all our problems.

This proposal will presumably be just as good.

Firetreev · 10/08/2026 20:58

Please do some research on El Salvadorian prisons. They are barbaric!

JustAnotherWhinger · 10/08/2026 20:58

It’s about as workable long term as the Rwanda plan

ThatWasGreek · 10/08/2026 21:01

He’s already saying he’s going to spend five billion immediately on new prison places. Seems a bit rubbish if we can’t even house our own prisoners and have to outsource it to Estonia.

Lararoft · 10/08/2026 21:11

Well the multiple flights needed to transport prisoners abroad would not be helpful to the environment (forgetting the human rights issue for a moment) but we know that Reform don’t believe in climate change anyway..

JHound · 10/08/2026 21:13

Does El Salvador have a say in this?

Also I don’t see what’s so brilliant? And how will it save money?

I doubt if El Salvador does agree that they will agree for free…

More pish spouting from the pish fountain.

And acts as an excellent deterrent.

LaLaBland · 10/08/2026 21:18

Can British prisoners be sent there also?

JesseDavisGonnaHangOnInThereNSoul · 10/08/2026 21:19

It not going to happen
Easy to say we will do this that and the other whilst not in power
More deflection for the financial capers.

parietal · 10/08/2026 21:19

It will cost a ludicrous amount of money and won’t really fix the issue. It will introduce delays in the justice system- mr A appeals 3 times against his transfer 3 more court hearings and an expensive charter flight. Now we’ve sent him but the police want to question him about a different crime. Do we fly him back? And repeat.

Ilikewinter · 10/08/2026 21:21

Are they going to charter a Con Air type plane to transport the prisoners??

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/08/2026 21:22

Watch the Richard Madely documentary on it and come back to us. Once in they are never getting out. Who do you think should be sent there?

RedToothBrush · 10/08/2026 21:27

Farage would have to win an election with a working majority, change the law on human rights end our membership of the ECHR (which trade deals with Europe take into consideration) and then change the law to do this because otherwise the courts would immediately block such a move.

El Salvador have 'lost' deportees from the US who have been sent to jail there - and subsequently it was found by American courts that said prisoners had illegally deported. They then had a job to locate them and eventually repatriate them back to the US.

Of course there would be compensation due for such miscarriages of justice.

There's so many hoops here to jump through on a practical level. But hell the headlines sound great and will win votes in certain quarters for those who don't understand the process.

lifeinthemidlands · 10/08/2026 21:29

I think El Salvador may have its own prison overcrowding problems.

Pebbles16 · 10/08/2026 21:32

@Jess788 Please educate yourself

Stompythedinosaur · 10/08/2026 21:32

It's almost as if Reform voters are more interested in performative cruelty than in having an economically efficient or functional society.

Does it? El Salvador prisons are even more overcrowded than our own. They don't have room for their own prisoners, never mind exported ones.

ProudCat · 10/08/2026 21:36

It's absolute bollocks. We should go back to the 1/3 parole eligibility thing rather than the 1/2 we have now. Serious criminals should still serve their full sentence. People who don't meet the eligibility criteria would serve 2/3 or whole sentence. The 1/3 system meant that the average con who could show remorse and reform was returned to society. There wasn't any of this 'automatic release' rubbish.

And FYI, the new terms that are seeing prisons packed just happened to come into force at exactly the same time that the prisons were privatised. Don't think it's too wild to suggest that the changes were made to encourage corporates to take over the prisons by assuring them that they'd always have a decent population incarcerated that they'd be getting paid for. Total travesty.

JustSawJohnny · 10/08/2026 21:39

'Brilliant' though 😂😂😂

More piffle for the divs who buy the 'invasion' rhetoric.

El Salvador in 2017 had the highest per capita homicide rank in the world. So um... deterrent against what, exactly? It's almost like, "prison doesn't work"

To think the El Salvador prison idea is a brilliant one?
Lipglossed · 10/08/2026 21:46

I just really believe prison should only be for violent or sexual offenders. I know that’s a hard sell for the public though, and reform on that scale would take years so doesn’t solve the immediate problem.

One thing’s for sure, El Salvador is not the solution.

Well rapists and murderers definitely if they will never get out out.
