To think the El Salvador prison idea is a brilliant one?

I usually steer clear of the news but caught this story earlier. What a brilliant idea - the prisons are overflowing and this would free up space and also save money.

Please do some research on El Salvadorian prisons. They are barbaric!

From the link:Reform says an agreement would require El Salvador to adhere to "British standards on size, lighting, heating, ventilation and fittings, and require daily open air time".

So standards would improve there. Yay human rights of el Salvador criminals.

Are they all single cells in the UK?

if prisons in general worked as deterrents we wouldnt be needing to listen to some toad cunt lie about offshoring them though tbf

It's releasing offenders that leads to reoffending.

And acts as an excellent deterrent.

So excellent that El Salvador is a crime-free utopia.

Oh, wait ...

Digerydont · 10/08/2026 23:18

There must be some way of removing repeat offenders from society, whilst at the same time allowing them basic human right.

So, life sentences for all? How does that work?

I think in theory it's great, but I think culturally Norway is quite different, and I'm not sure it would carry over. I've thought for a long time that I'd link early release to education inside. If getting the next level of qualifications could get you out early, we'd be releasing a lot of people who come out more educated than they went in, which must improve life chances and positively impact reoffending rates.

All for education in prison, which we do have already?

Culturally? In what way? I believe people are people though and all capable of crime when pushed or out of need (as well as greed, anger, drugs jealousy, whatever human traits).
Norway does, however, have a lot less poverty than the UK, strong social welfare systems throughout, good education and healthcare. It does have a drug problem (I can remember it when lived outside Oslo as a kid) but it was altogether a better country. I guess the difference is that the country looks after it's residents, taking away many causes of crime in the first place. Supporting prisoners is also a part of the way the country is run but it's working.

CECOT high security prison is for gang members. Non gang members are not sent to CECOT. Rehabilitation programs in their standard prisons vary but they typically have what's known as a "no idle" policy which means prisoners are engaged in education, rehabilitation or work programs for most of their waking time.

The mass incarceration of gang members has decreased the murder rate from it's peak of 105 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants annually to 1.3 per 100,000. School attendance has also increased significantly because parents are no longer afraid to let their children leave the house. To put it in perspective there are roughly 500-600 murders each year in the UK, that would be more like 65,000 per year if our murder rate was similar to El Salvador at it's peak.

I think sending UK prisoners abroad is a bad idea.

So why did the US sent 280 men there without trial? All for trivial allegations concerning their immigration status. Nothing connecting them with any gangs (wrong country for a start).

Digerydont · 10/08/2026 23:29

Norway has a much lower homicide rate than the UK, despite a much higher gun ownership rate.

Corianda · 10/08/2026 23:38

Norway has a huge sovereign wealth fund so is very comfortably off - the opposite of us

Digerydont · 10/08/2026 23:38

The UK homicide rate was 6 per million in 1960, rose to around 15 by 2002–2003 and has fallen back to around 9. What changed?
Did the abolition of the death penalty led to a higher homicide rate? Has the introduction of severe minimum tariffs lead to a reduction in the homicide rate?

As a deterrent- you only need to do this once -sad for the unlucky ones but there won’t be many more

We have immigration from countries with a homicide rate of 10+ times the UK homicide rate.

The people that go in there would deserve it though.

Unlikely that the punishment has anything to do with it. Family and social changes, including the role of men, drugs and alcohol more readily available, changes to laws on child and domestic abuse, including marital rape, changes to divorce laws, pornography, increasing population and therefore stretched resources and widening inequality are all more likely to have had an impact on the murder rate.

It's to give the dim blood thirsty something to chew on as a distraction, while he sneaks past carrying the bag of swag - like chucking the guard dog a piece of meat.

Article says foreign prisoners are eligible for deportation anyway (if sentenced to more than 12 months). So I don’t get the problem. Just deport them.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/08/2026 00:28

Another pie in the sky idea.
Border patrol restrictions would be more beneficial. Stopping further mass immigration otherwise they’re emptying a swimming pool with an egg cup.

This has to be rage bait
