To think the El Salvador prison idea is a brilliant one?

I usually steer clear of the news but caught this story earlier. What a brilliant idea - the prisons are overflowing and this would free up space and also save money.

Interesting reaction OP, because my only reaction was to reflect on how desperate Reform are getting.

Their plan is unworkable and absolute bullshit. “Tough” talk with no consideration of the practicalities or whether it would actually work in practice.

Stagnating in the polls with a leader who was once a massive asset but is now the opposite, they need headline grabbing ideas to stave off the decline and distract from Nigel’s “issues”.

Like I say, it reeks of desperation. They are just not serious people.

Notellinganyone · 10/08/2026 22:23

It’s an absolutely ridiculous idea.

Folk should look up Norways model. Lots of rehab and one of the lowest reoffending rates in the world.

It wouldn't work with the kind of people that end up in UK prisons.

I am a rape victim, but I don't think that is a requirement to take part in this discussion.

Keep on showing your arse, it's a great look for Reform voters and how their brains work.

You're ok with violent criminals roaming free then? Its not just reform voters that want them banged up. Most people with half a brain want them taken off the streets

There are randomised trial going on with Scandinavian wings in the uk. It is apparently going really well but when this news came out the right wing hit the roof.

Despite the fact that it seems to be safer for prison staff as well as the prisoners and has reduced staff sickness and retention.

There were rather more serious suggestions of renting places in European prisons a few years ago. The Netherlands, I think.

Why El Salvador, why not North Korea that’s what we’re usually told to compare to. Strangely random choice, from a strangely random upper class twit.

Me: "I do not agree with the simplistic and unrealistic idea of shipping prisoners from the UK to places like El Salvador."

Reform: "You want violent rapists and murderers set free!"

What a leap. You look foolish.

It’s blatantly because of the publicity El Salvador gets regarding its ultra-hardline prisons. Because Nige and Zia are dead tuff innit.

I think they do something different with violent prisoners though- the rehab etc is for lesser prisoners. Plus Norway is a different country anyway. Damned if I see why I should pay for any criminals to have computers, facilities and degree level retraining and education when I have to pay through the nose for my own.

I'm disappointed that Vanessa Frake has involved herself with this.

We need to clamp down on the small crimes.

Farage would have to win an election with a working majority, change the law on human rights end our membership of the ECHR (which trade deals with Europe take into consideration) and then change the law to do this because otherwise the courts would immediately block such a move.

El Salvador have 'lost' deportees from the US who have been sent to jail there - and subsequently it was found by American courts that said prisoners had illegally deported. They then had a job to locate them and eventually repatriate them back to the US.

Of course there would be compensation due for such miscarriages of justice.

There's so many hoops here to jump through on a practical level. But hell the headlines sound great and will win votes in certain quarters for those who don't understand the process.

😂100%

I’m also not an MP, have no influence in government whatsoever, but I’m currently in talks with the Maldivian government to give every woman over 40 a free holiday to the Maldives.
No funding. No authority. No actual plan.

Gosh. Coming up with bullshit policies that people will vote for is really quite easy, isn’t it?

LadyRoughDiamond · 10/08/2026 22:40

As Dostoevsky said, “a society should be judged not by how it treats its outstanding citizens, but by how it treats its criminals”.
Which, basically, means that treating people who have power, wealth, or high standing well is easy for any community. A true test of humanity is how a system handles its lowest, most marginalized, or most condemned members.

They ARE releasing violent prisoners though, isnt that the whole point of the thread?

SomeoneIsWrongOnTheInternet · 10/08/2026 22:40

And again: can those of us who work productively and obey the law have those facilities please @SocksAndTheCity ? What’s the point of doing things right now when you can get a better and easier life through ‘making one mistake’ ( as their excuses have it)? And being male, of course, let’s not forget that.

Has anyone that you love been murdered or raped?

If not then you cannot comment.

Once the murderers and rapists have been released perhaps they could go and live with you if you care about them so much.

how about you try and live up to your username?

everyone has the right to comment. That’s kind of the point of freedom of speech.

Gengha · 10/08/2026 22:42

As for the idea, it’s completely stupid, hence why I can see it appealing to Reform voters. Farage knows it stupid and unworkable too, but he doesn’t care.

bumblingbovine49 · 10/08/2026 22:45

lazyarse123 · 10/08/2026 22:09

If it could work and be cheaper I'd like it. Shame we can't send our home grown child rapists there. Absolutely don't care if it's barbaric. The crimes being committed by some foreign born men are barbaric too but nothing stops them.

Yes because the barbaric prison system in El Salvador is a real deterrent. El Salvador is such a wonderful safe place to live with such a low crime rate. I'm sure it is because all the criminals are put off committing crimes due to their fear of the terrible prison conditions. We should definitely copy this system or at least use piggyback off it.

Much better than copying the Scandinavian prison model where the soft prison conditions lead to such a high crime level

Oh wait.....

The critical thinking abilities of a large number of posters on here is truly depressing

Snackccident · 10/08/2026 22:46

Nige can fuck off and live in his El Salvador prison. Rishi can piss off to Rwanda. Donald can build his own fucking wall.

Honestly, they are all too stupid to fix any actual problems, so they come up with some ridiculous plan to distract from their shitness. Fix the fucking economy, sort the NHS out and give schools enough money to actually be able to function. Binface is looking better by the day.

Thanks for mentioning this - £10k per wing (for 143 prisoners) set up costs and the same staff ratios,p plus some extra staff training (which will be the most expensive bit) seems a low investment if it's as effective as the article suggests. You'd get an ROI fairly rapidly I think.

I think you've mistaken me for somebody else @SomeoneIsWrongOnTheInternet; I didn't introduce the Vanguard scheme, I just posted the link as I remembered reading about it earlier today.

You maybe think it's preferable to just incarcerate people with no attempt at rehabilitation, thus making those who work in the prison service's lives ever more difficult and dangerous. Others feel differently.
