To think the El Salvador prison idea is a brilliant one?

I usually steer clear of the news but caught this story earlier. What a brilliant idea - the prisons are overflowing and this would free up space and also save money.

Sell Wandsworth for housing (it's vile) and look at Macquarie Correctional Centre in Australia, from concept to build in just over a year. Dorms, not cells; masses of CCTV but also a structured programme. Build half a dozen of them and you change things quickly. Build them a bit out of London and the differential in land cost would help subsidise build costs.

There are randomised trial going on with Scandinavian wings in the uk. It is apparently going really well but when this news came out the right wing hit the roof.

Despite the fact that it seems to be safer for prison staff as well as the prisoners and has reduced staff sickness and retention.

The point of prison is to provide a deterrent and prevent reoffending. The current system has failed to do this as society’s need for punishment and retribution has put a stop to any useful investment that could make for an effective environment of rehabilitation.

Whilst the Scandinavian model won’t be appropriate for the most dangerous criminals, it could make a real difference and, long-term, cut the prison population and cost to the taxpayer.

Typically fucking stupid, unworkable idea which non-MP Farage puts forward in the knowledge that he's never going to implement it, even in the highly unlikely event that he's ever in a position to do so.

TicklishReader · 10/08/2026 22:50

Dollymylove · 10/08/2026 22:40

They ARE releasing violent prisoners though, isnt that the whole point of the thread?

No, this thread is about Farage's latest attempt to keep Reform voters interested.

He knows he could never pull this off, but it sure does get people excited.

Folk should look up Norways model. Lots of rehab and one of the lowest reoffending rates in the world.

I think in theory it's great, but I think culturally Norway is quite different, and I'm not sure it would carry over. I've thought for a long time that I'd link early release to education inside. If getting the next level of qualifications could get you out early, we'd be releasing a lot of people who come out more educated than they went in, which must improve life chances and positively impact reoffending rates.

Given that governments of all colours have found it difficult to remove every foreign national to their own country, this seems like an enormous white elephant.

Why El Salvador and not a country that is a functioning democracy? Or in Europe? And who will you send? People doing life sentences - who are mostly in well behaved - or people on a 28 day recall, who are mostly not. Women going there too? Children? El Salvadorean prisons are even more crowded than ours and have even worse gang problem. Pretty sure Gary from Manchester isn’t going to come back a reformed characte.

How will you manage healthcare, addiction and resettlement. The biggest reason for the prison crisis is increasingly long sentences, not actually an increase in crime, so this seems like an expensive way of solving a problem that could easily be fixed by reducing sentences where they’ve got out of hand and serve no purpose.

Eye catching bullshit from a party that’s losing it’s shine.

Aren't prisoners getting hamsters. I heard somewhere in the UK is giving prisoners hamsters?

Happyjoe · 10/08/2026 22:56

SomeoneIsWrongOnTheInternet · 10/08/2026 22:36

I think they do something different with violent prisoners though- the rehab etc is for lesser prisoners. Plus Norway is a different country anyway. Damned if I see why I should pay for any criminals to have computers, facilities and degree level retraining and education when I have to pay through the nose for my own.

Bottom line though is rehab works for many (even violent criminals), reoffending being low costs the taxpayers less in the long run than going back through courts and sending them back to prison. The American system of locked up for life or death doesn't put people off committing crimes.

Why won’t the Scandinavian model be appropriate for dangerous prisoners? It seems to be applied to Breivik in Norway just fine.

Homicide rate has gone down, true enough. But it is still much higher than in the UK.

Farge can spout this sort of pish for his supporters to swallow, he is never going to be in a position to implement it.

Goats, I thought. Free goats.

I watched this. It would certainly be a deterrent to committing crime if that was what faced them!!!

What would be, watching a Richard Madeley documentary?

Petrie999 · 10/08/2026 23:00

Can anyone explain the plan for what happens at the end of the sentence? Presumably the idea is that the removal to el Salvador acts as deportation and thus they would be released there? If so, thats a lot more of an ask than just renting prison places

SomeoneIsWrongOnTheInternet · 10/08/2026 23:00

SocksAndTheCity · 10/08/2026 22:48

I think you've mistaken me for somebody else @SomeoneIsWrongOnTheInternet; I didn't introduce the Vanguard scheme, I just posted the link as I remembered reading about it earlier today.

You maybe think it's preferable to just incarcerate people with no attempt at rehabilitation, thus making those who work in the prison service's lives ever more difficult and dangerous. Others feel differently.

i didn’t suggest you were in charge, but you introduced the link as a - presumably - positive thing.

Ill ask you again, where’s the motivation now for those of us from poor backgrounds without the facilities you’re dishing out to criminals to actually follow the law and engage?

I used to work in schools for SEMH. I’m not doing that now for precisely that reason. Fed up of watching so much be dished out to those who do not deserve it while the law abiding poor just get kicked some more. I can’t provide the facilities and opportunities wasted there for my own kids. And again, SEMH schools are also heavily male.

Anger is growing among us working poor. Leave aside the well off superiority and answer the question. Where’s the value to engage and be law abiding if you’re poor? All you will do is encourage lawlessness.

Ed to add / The sexed nature of crime is very relevant when even official stats show violence by men against women is increasing. The boys in those schools actively prefer to attack women and use the presence of women as an excuse to be more violent. Giving them more is not improving their behaviour. Frankly I’m not sure anything will. Tbe adult version is no different.

Proven so far to be a good idea, animal care. Keeps prisoners calm, sense of purpose and to care for another. I don't think animals in prisons is a new idea.

Corianda · 10/08/2026 23:01

Yes, I thought it was a good idea too -great deterrent -it’s £40,000 a year to keep someone in prison - let’s send them somewhere cheaper

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 10/08/2026 23:05

This sounds like Rwanda scheme mark 2.

Then realised you meant Wandsworth Prison.

As you were.

There was an interesting programme on BBC, Inside Barlinnie which had an episode about a rehabilitation strategy they implemented for some of the worst violent murderers, Jimmy Boyle being the best known one. Worth a watch. Given most criminals don’t get locked up forever is rehabilitation and giving them prospects of a life on the outside a more sensible idea than endless reoffending?

Meadowlands · 10/08/2026 23:07

Prisons should only be for those who are a danger to society.
Other law breakers should have punishment outside of prison - community service etc rather than costing the tax payer a fortune keeping them in prison.

ColdAsAWitches · 10/08/2026 23:08

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 10/08/2026 22:13

Has anyone that you love been murdered or raped?

If not then you cannot comment.

Once the murderers and rapists have been released perhaps they could go and live with you if you care about them so much.

What a load of nonsense. By your logic nobody could be a judge or prison officer unless a family member had been killed. Or a juror! People can have opinions on shit ideas.

I saw a program where female lifers in the USA were allowed to keep a dog in their cell. They had to properly care for it and take it for walks. These women were all serving life without the possibility of parole.

Yes because the barbaric prison system in El Salvador is a real deterrent. El Salvador is such a wonderful safe place to live with such a low crime rate. I'm sure it is because all the criminals are put off committing crimes due to their fear of the terrible prison conditions. We should definitely copy this system or at least use piggyback off it.

Much better than copying the Scandinavian prison model where the soft prison conditions lead to such a high crime level

Oh wait.....

The critical thinking abilities of a large number of posters on here is truly depressing

I'm not interested in rehabilitation for child rapists. Punishment is what they should get. Nothing any bleeding heart liberal could say would change that.
