To think the El Salvador prison idea is a brilliant one?

I usually steer clear of the news but caught this story earlier. What a brilliant idea - the prisons are overflowing and this would free up space and also save money.

Please do some research on El Salvadorian prisons. They are barbaric!

Well, that is perfect for rapists and murderers then.

MirrorMirror1247 · 10/08/2026 21:56

We need more prisons in this country. I know that's easier said than done, but sending people off to El Salvador isn't the answer.

JustAnotherWhinger · 10/08/2026 20:58

It’s about as workable long term as the Rwanda plan

Considering we paid for masses of dormitory buildings and (supposedly) staffing infrastructure provisions in Rwanda, why doesn't Nigel think about sending them there?

Though I gather the potential for massive, dodgy backhanders is even greater in El Salvador. Reform chairman Lee Anderson will doubtless have a great time on his information-gathering visit.

Squeeky112 · 10/08/2026 22:00

Maybe start by deporting those MPs who received huge bundles of cash (£5m) for 'security' and forgot to declare it. And then stop deporting other criminals because the country would already be a better place.

Why don't we just put them in a big cannon and shoot them into space while we are at it?!

Honestly, my 13 year old has a better understanding of the justice system and human rights than some adults on this site.

Watch the Richard Madely documentary on it and come back to us. Once in they are never getting out. Who do you think should be sent there?

I watched this. It would certainly be a deterrent to committing crime if that was what faced them!!!

It's almost as if Reform voters are more interested in performative cruelty than in having an economically efficient or functional society.

This...so much this

How is that going for the US? Crime must be at an all-time low.

checks

Nope!

Then you dont understand what causes crime. And how less rehabilitation and stability (of which there is fuck all anyway) would not reduce reoffending.

lazyarse123 · 10/08/2026 22:09

If it could work and be cheaper I'd like it. Shame we can't send our home grown child rapists there. Absolutely don't care if it's barbaric. The crimes being committed by some foreign born men are barbaric too but nothing stops them.

Yes these uncosted and undetailed proposals always sound so simple.

Always with the easy solutions.

If I remember, Brexit was all going to be marvellous and solve all our problems.

This proposal will presumably be just as good.

It’s going to be the prison equivalent of the Rwanda plan in which we pay a country a huge amount of money to send no prisoners there.

It does, like the Rwanda plan have the advantage of allowing them to say ‘this would be sorted if you just followed the plan’ ignoring the fact there are probably a million reasons why it won’t but facts won’t matter.

If they are in jail they are not robbing/assaulting/raping/murdering innocent citizens. Thats what people want. To be safe
Not too much to ask really is it !

Happyjoe · 10/08/2026 22:12

Lol, is it going to cost billions like Rwanda?!!

Has anyone that you love been murdered or raped?

If not then you cannot comment.

Once the murderers and rapists have been released perhaps they could go and live with you if you care about them so much.

Those who made it back out would emerge as fully-fledged and hardened members of Central American crime gangs. They could then help the gangs expand into Europe and North Africa, putting them in direct conflict with the Albanians and forging new routes for the Chinese/Mexican heroin channels.

It's a great idea, we'd really benefit from an escalation in violent, major international crime.

CECOT high security prison is for gang members. Non gang members are not sent to CECOT. Rehabilitation programs in their standard prisons vary but they typically have what's known as a "no idle" policy which means prisoners are engaged in education, rehabilitation or work programs for most of their waking time.

The mass incarceration of gang members has decreased the murder rate from it's peak of 105 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants annually to 1.3 per 100,000. School attendance has also increased significantly because parents are no longer afraid to let their children leave the house. To put it in perspective there are roughly 500-600 murders each year in the UK, that would be more like 65,000 per year if our murder rate was similar to El Salvador at it's peak.

I think sending UK prisoners abroad is a bad idea.

Concentration camps by any other name.

Folk should look up Norways model. Lots of rehab and one of the lowest reoffending rates in the world.

I am a rape victim, but I don't think that is a requirement to take part in this discussion.

Keep on showing your arse, it's a great look for Reform voters and how their brains work.

Because what actually happened was the Rwandan government used our money to build those buildings for Rwandans so they are probably occupied by now.

No idea what happened to the few people we did manage to send there. Neither do Rwanda from what I can remember. Probably re entered the uk on a small boat.
