AIBU to think refusing treatment from non-white medical professionals should have consequences?

There has apparently been a significant rise in racism towards NHS staff, with a growing number of people refusing to allow non-white NHS staff to treat them. This is sad but not surprising given the shift in society as a whole towards people expressing their racism much more openly.

https://news.sky.com/story/nhs-staff-experiencing-unconscionable-levels-of-racist-abuse-survey-finds-13569575

I have always admired the commitment of NHS staff who treat all patients with care and compassion, even when those patients are rude and abusive. But if people are actually refusing to let certain staff provide treatment, surely there should be consequences for this?

AIBU to think that everyone has the right to refuse treatment if they so wish, but if a patient refuses treatment from a medical professional simply because they don't like the colour of that medical practitioner's skin, then they should then forfeit the right to receive that treatment on the NHS. So they can either go without or find the money to be treated privately by a medical professional of their choice?

There would need to be signs warning people of the consequences of their choices, of course, but if someone doesn't want a Black or Asian radiographer carry out their x-ray, then fine... they just don't get an x-ray.

A rape victim will most certainly take priority with accessing a same sex clinician. Even outside of those extreme circumstances, there are issues around safeguarding. You can't force a woman to be internally examined by a male clinician. There will always be a female clinician available, in such cases shoukd a woman request. You seem to have thrown in a few curve balls from your OP, which I agreed with.

It depends on the clinic. i said earlier when I was at uni the closest sexual health clinic made it clear they could not accommodate requests foe appointments with female gynos as there were not enough available. And that was signposted at the clinic.

I also don’t think they would cancel and reschedule other people’s appointments to accommodate some people’s requests. I imagine though a rape kit would be done in a specialist venue with female clinicians available.

But they are not being left to die. They are choosing to refuse treatment.

Do people who refuse treatment have zero accountability in your eyes?

Or maybe we are saying the same. If a racist patient’s preferred HCP is available they should have their preference respected. If not and they refuse treatment well…that’s on them.

Edited

I think that if people in a serious condition refuse treatment because of race, sex, or because their HCP has a squint, and a person they will accept treatment from is available, then the humane thing to do would be to get the preferred HCP to treat them. People who are in pain or ill aren't always rational, and shouldn't be left to suffer or die.

(I do think if it's non-urgent and race-related, they should just get popped at the bottom of the list of whatever HCP they wish to see).

Rape, sexual assault, assault. Domestic violence, bullying etc.
As I posted, we don't know about the personal history of someone that said that they were "scared of black people".

So if I am assaulted by a white person, I can ask for a non-white doctor?

i have been assaulted by a white man, actually. Therefore I will now hate all white men.

FrippEnos · 04/08/2026 12:51

JHound · 04/08/2026 12:47

Because it is racism. I cannot think of a non-racist reason to be scared a billion people globally due to their perceived melanin level.

Would you say the same of a woman that wanted a same sex doctor?
Its not all men but its mainly men.

OtterlyAstounding · 04/08/2026 12:53

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 04/08/2026 12:47

Absolutely, and a rape victim should take priority in that scenario, as should any other woman who has a specific need to see a female clinician.

Personally, I have a preference to see female clinicians for specific procedures but not an actual need. So if the only female clinicians available are already busy seeing patients with higher level needs than me, I think it's perfectly reasonable that I should be told that I can only see a male clinician on that day.

I'm still curious to know how exactly assessing a clinical need would happen?

Truama affects people in different ways.

People are allowed to be scared for whatever reason and it doesn't mean that they are racist.

Which of those are genuine reasons to be scared of black people? Why would being a DV mean my fear of the black nurse is not racist?

This.

English is the first language of Irish and Scots too, but I still cannot understand a solitary word they say to me.

It's not skin colour; it's the accent being so heavy it changes the shape their mouth forms when they're speaking.

I'm partially deaf in one ear, and I lipread without knowing I'm doing it. It was picked up on by a consultant when I was a child. My brain fills in the missing words, so to me, I am hearing you speak. It's not a skill I have deliberately learned, and it's not something I can do with accents I am not familiar with and because I didn't actively learn how to do it, I can't teach myself how to lipread unfamiliar accents.

I'm fine with accents I know and would regularly translate drunken Geordie for colleagues when I worked in bars in Manchester. Ditto Chinese accents, but if it is not an accent I grew up around, I can't hear what you're saying; my brain cannot fill in the words my ears miss.

I hate having to ask to speak to someone else, and it makes me feel like shit when people roll their eyes at me and walk off sighing and muttering, but what else can I do? I literally cannot hear what they're saying if they have a heavy accent.

You can’t understand a single Irish or Scottish person? How on earth do you contact your bank!

Discrimination on the basis of race is racist actually.

You can defend their reaction but to try to say it is not racist is silly.

friedaklein · 04/08/2026 12:54

Sex is not the same as race. I don't want a man to perform a smear test on me. Not.because I think he will rape me. The same reason I don't want to share a loo with a man. Modesty, dignity, comfort.
That's why the SC has spoken in favour of same sex spaces.
The deflection on this thread!

If the assault has traumatised you to such an extent that being treated by a white HCP would be hugely detrimental to your mental health, then sure.

i suspect the number of people who would genuinely need to make such requests in respect of any race is extremely low, but I’d hope HCPs would be able to recognise genuine trauma when they see it.

The logical consequence of this is that people would die in agony because they are racist.

I bet they'd change their mind about only being treated by white people if they were in agony.

friedaklein · 04/08/2026 12:57

Oddly, I have never seen anyone say " I am scared of white people or white men".
Why is that?

We’re not talking about wanting a same race doctor. But being scared of a billion people globally and saying it’s not racism.

And yes I think that being scared of an entire gender is misandry / misogyny.

(But to be clear is, unless going private my experience is I can request but won’t necessarily get and may have to wait longer to get what I want.)

PurpleHeadedDonkey · 04/08/2026 12:57

YABU. People have the right to withdraw consent to their treatment at anytime and for any reason.

friedaklein · 04/08/2026 12:58

Some of you need to read the SC judgement on same sex spaces and gender critical beliefs. They are legal.
Racism is not legal.
There is no such thing as racism againat men. Men are not a race. They are a sex.🙄

YouAreTheCauseOfMyHeadache · 04/08/2026 12:59

The NHS is a universal healthcare system - that includes treating wankers.

Okay? Good for you. My point was simply that women shouldn't be forced to see male HCPs if female ones are available. And a common reason that many women don't want to see male HCPs is because of trauma, so your example seemed to work against your point.
