Day one of a weeks holiday in Spain with DP and DC (age 4, 3 and 0)

Me and DP had an argument this morning which was in my opinion trivial but I know people are different. Basically I was stressed because the 2 older kids had been crying most of the morning as we had a late arrival and they haven’t slept enough (got to hotel at 1.30am and was up at 7.30). Wasn’t working in the hotel room trying to get them to sleep so I wanted to get them out in the pushchair. Partner suggested going to the shops and (I believe he said) then go swimming straight after. Baby was asleep so didn’t get her ready for swimming. DP was taking ages getting ready so I said I’d just walk them up and down to stop the crying. Tbf it was only a few minutes when I came back as he still wasn’t out the room as he was doing his hair. I was unreasonably annoyed, basically in a huff saying I might as well get baby ready as I was waiting for him anyway (but didn’t say that). It was just the stress of waiting around for 2 hours in the room already with them not settling. Then it was an argument over what we were doing basically. Escalated as he said that he was gonna stay in the hotel room so I was fuming because that meant me being left with all 3 kids and I genuinely can’t take them all out by myself very easily. So I got pissed off and threw a hat at him which knocked his water over (that was out of order I know). So he said he was going out before he got angry. This was 7 hours ago. He’s not responding to messages etc so no clue where he is. He’s probably just in the hotel bar. But I’ve had this before where he takes days to calm down regardless of whether I apologise etc. Yes it was my fault but it this a normal reaction?! I can’t stay on holiday like this. There is literally no point me being here because I haven’t been able to take the kids swimming or anywhere really today. Had a walk to the shops (2 in a pushchair whilst wearing a baby carrier. 4 year old is autistic which is why he needs a pushchair for safety) so only a small walk. Got some food etc to cook as I don’t see how I can go to the restaurant with all of them as I can’t leave them at the table. We’re all inclusive and haven’t brought enough money to keep buying food as didn’t think that was going to be needed.
A friend has said she’ll lend me the money for flights home if I want to go tomorrow. AIBU if I do that and just leave him here? I will let him know but he’s not replying to anything even me asking if he was coming back so I could get the kids some food which I think is out of order. Hence the walk to the shops. So I have no clue when he’ll be back. What would you do?

That’s exactly what I thought - he’s just looking for an excuse to bail. Why the hell keep having kids if not interested in looking after them?!

How else would a man like this lock down a woman?

What time is it where you are?

@gamerchick no, I have 4 children and two with SN, one very profoundly disabled. I have given advice. It’s incredibly worrying to me that I’d need to give advice as to how to feed the kids. I really hope they have actually eaten…

So you've coped with them alone and on little sleep in a foreign country then?

I had 3 with SN, there would have been no taking all 3 to a self serve and balancing trays on the buggy. That's assuming it's a double buggy.

It's all very well criticising because you can cope but obviously the OP is struggling. I don't see how sticking the boot in will help.

IronEverything · 03/08/2026 20:46

I've got to be honest I don't know how you're going to manage to get home on your own with the 4 children OP. You need to tell him he's flying home too.

SpaceRaccoon · 03/08/2026 20:46

DemBonesDemBones · 03/08/2026 18:55

If my partner had thrown something at me I would stay away for 7 hours. I’d stay away forever, actually.

Bad enough to stay away forever, but not so bad that you can't leave your three tiny children with her?

Hmmm, he’s been gone a long time - do you think he’s passed out somewhere (from drink or exhaustion!) - I would ask the staff to look for him - if your AI involves signing for things they’ll probably be able ti see where he’s been even if they can’t tell you

2O26 · 03/08/2026 20:49

Thinking of you right now. Hope things turn around.

"A friend has said she’ll lend me the money for flights home if I want to go tomorrow. AIBU if I do that and just leave him here?" How much will it cost to fly home, and can you afford it? Managing three young kids at the airport by yourself is a lot. Can you manage? This is such a tough predicament to be in.

bafta16 · 03/08/2026 20:49

Is he safe? Just a thought.

Partialretiredpensioner · 03/08/2026 20:50

He has headed off and drank his head off on the all inclusive! Absolute shit.

chocoluv · 03/08/2026 20:50

DemBonesDemBones · 03/08/2026 20:31

@gamerchickit’s completely alien to me that neither of these parents can manage their children alone. There’s no way my children would be unable to eat or leave captivity if left with either parent. Especially if all 3 could be contained in sling/pushchair. Throwing anything is an act of aggression. Both of these people are too immature to parent.

What OP did was awful and if DH had retaliated he would have been the worst person in the world.

He did the right thing by removing himself and not speaking to OP for a while.

However, I think you’re minimising how difficult it would be to take a baby and 2 toddlers into a buffet alone.

How can OP carry a plate and hold on to her toddlers at the same time, especially when one has SEN?

What about drinks?

How is she going to sit and get them to eat if one of them urgently needs the toilet or the baby has a dirty nappy.

At home I’m sure that both parents can manage easily as you can leave them for short periods whilst you get a drink etc
But you obviously can’t do that in a restaurant.

A671090 · 03/08/2026 20:50

OP I’m so sorry this is happening - I really feel for you!
Personally I think the idea of flying on your own will be a nightmare - could you speak to the hotel (tonight) find out if they have any registered minders (even kids club employees who may want to earn a bit of cash) and get a few hours support?
Your husband has behaved appallingly- if you were my daughter I would strongly advise you to start looking at ways to leave him. Calmly and measured.
I hope you get a good nights sleep!

SourdoughSally · 03/08/2026 20:51

Some men are such children. He really needs to grow up and take responsibility for his children and their well-being.

OP you sound like you have so much in your plate and you're doing really well. Sorry your holiday has been spoilt

JellyWizard · 03/08/2026 20:51

I'm not sure if other posters have mentioned but is there anyone who can fly out to come and help you instead of you having to go home with all of the kids? I appreciate it's short notice though. I'm sorry you're going through this OP

Partialretiredpensioner · 03/08/2026 20:51

Sorry i can’t advice you on what to do. You’ll need to decide yourself. Never ever let him put you in this situation again though.

DaysIllRememberAllMyLife · 03/08/2026 20:51

Do you have 3 children or 4 op?

carly2803 · 03/08/2026 20:52

thats awful hes fucked off all day and left you with 3 kids on holiday
yes, you should have not thrown something at him at all and you admitted that - but he could have had a huff for an hour then gone back

he is well out of order. I would try to salvage this holiday and save the money for a split when i got home

DemBonesDemBones · 03/08/2026 20:52

@chocoluvthe same way she would in a cafe at home?

Probably

FourCatMama · 03/08/2026 20:53

Why can’t you and baby go home and leave the oldest two with him?

BlackRowan · 03/08/2026 20:54

BusyMommaOf4 · 03/08/2026 19:00

Well I already have admitted I was in the wrong coz I was stressed etc. But I know him: he takes days until he’s ok with me again. So this isn’t salvageable anytime soon. I can’t spend another day like today, which is why I’m asking if you think I should just go home in the morning or have a horrific 2-3 days and hope that he speaks to me again after that. I think the kids would rather be at home where I can actually do stuff with them.

Rather than go home try to pay for creche or nanny maybe? Ask staff for help with food at AI buffet, they will - you don’t need to cook. Just get one plate of stuff and ask them to bring Empty plates for kids

can’t advise on DP. Maybe couples therapy?

I have flown myself with 3 small children. Yes it’s hard of course it would be easier with another person but it’s perfectly doable. Actually easier the being on an all inclusive with the children alone

RedSnail1 · 03/08/2026 20:56

I might be missing something, but he having dinner is not possible. How do you expect to manage flying home?

To be honest, I would want some space as well, but I think you need to find him and see if you can get past it; otherwise, I would be going home.

travelallthetime · 03/08/2026 20:57

Be kind to yourself, you were tired and threw a baby hat at him, sound like a brick would have been beeter, what a complete knob.

I never say LTB but I would be out of there in the morning with the kids and I would LTB totally. He isnt 12 anymore in a grump, he is a father of three who has fucked off all day becuase you threw a baby hat at him. Fucking ridiculous behavious
