Unnecessary comment about my outfit from male member of staff at the school - your thoughts?

TwatAtSchool91 · 02/08/2026 21:49

I live a stones throw from a secondary school which I have to pass daily on our school run.

A male member of staff stands outside in the morning greeting the kids.

A few months ago he made a comment to me as I walked past him. It was a stupid remark, nothing vulgar or massively offensive, but it has bothered me to the extent I'm now self conscious about what I'm wearing whenever I have to go past him.

The comment he made was "morning Blade" in a mocking tone, both infront of the secondary school kids and my own.

(for reference I was wearing a belted leather trench coat and some black riding style boots)

It wasn't a friendly jibe, he was being a twat. I wouldn't give it much thought if he were a random in the street but he's stood there representing the school 😐

Would you have raised it with the school or not? Do you think it was inappropriate?

He sounds a bit pathetic, like he was hoping the secondary school kids would think he was cool and funny. Next time I’d just look him in the eye and say ‘Busy day at work?’

SevenYellowHammers · 03/08/2026 01:55

He’s probably a snidey 13 year old SLT type in a blue suit, hi-viz and brown brogues. He wasn’t cool at school and now he’s trying out banter in front of the kids to try and be down with them. What a dick! I don’t think I could be arsed to report him unless he does it again. But he is a dick. Not Wanker of the Week by MN standards though.

Cora0 · 03/08/2026 01:58

I looked it up because I’ve never heard of it and apparently it’s from 1998. So not only did he insult a woman’s outfit, he did it with a 28 year old reference. You’d better believe I’d be mocking his age the next time I saw him.

They go low, I’m going straight to hell. Grin

Tbf this sounds funny as. He’s quite quick.

Hands up - I laughed

A leather trench and tall boots will always carry attention. Not sure what you expect?

Especially in summer.

SquirrelGG · 03/08/2026 02:25

Honestly, I am amazed how some MNers get through life! Forget about it OP, it was a throwaway comment - I would have laughed - and not worth thinking about 2 seconds later, let alone a few months. You really are going to have a tough life if you continue to focus on nonsense like this.

As for raising it with the school - I'm pretty sure their response would have been the same as mine 🙄

agri · 03/08/2026 02:26

I’m sorry, I shouldn’t laugh, but it is quite funny. You are right though, he shouldn’t be saying this at the school gates and in front of school kids.

Is there any chance he was ‘flirting’ rather than being a twat?

agri · 03/08/2026 02:27

I also wouldn’t raise it with school unless it becomes a regular thing. I can totally imagine feeling self conscious though.

TheHatTrick · 03/08/2026 02:33

Is he hot?

MustardGlass · 03/08/2026 02:47

If it really upset you that much it is unreasonable that you didn’t reply with fuck off you wanker. straight away. Tbh I don’t think it’s offensive but I would have probably replied with morning Dobby no matter what he looked like.

QuirkyHorse · 03/08/2026 03:32

Very witty!
I would have found it funny and it's a shame it is still on your mind months later.

echt · 03/08/2026 03:45

Having trouble believing this thread, but here goes, bearing in mind it's the holidays, always prime time for having a pop at teachers.

He was employed by the school, on the premises, so on duty. What he said was not OK at all. Not sure what his being male had to do with it.

However, as @TwatAtSchool91 has let it ride for months, then I wouldn't follow up now.

LBFseBrom · 03/08/2026 04:04

Exactly.`

Blade is male anyway, as far as I know.

It was just a joke, no offence meant. Why are you even still thinking about it?

Palomiino · 03/08/2026 04:09

He’s unprofessional, that’s for sure. Somehow I doubt he’d have said this to a man.

I suppose the comment itself could have been worse but he’s still a dick.

TheBrunswick · 03/08/2026 04:22

I think it's hilarious, however I'm one of 6 siblings and comments like this are an everyday occurrence.
I was once compared to a wasp when I wore a navy and yellow striped top. I still wore it.

Are you Irish, OP? They’re savages when it comes to critiquing fashion. This is a BoredPanda summary of responses to a Twitter account where the writer was called Super Mario by a stranger for wearing a red beret.

https://www.boredpanda.com/funny-irish-fashion-tweets/

As an aside, I cycled into town with my DD during COVID for a takeaway coffee. I was wearing that viral yellow Joules fisherman jacket at the time and a homeless guy walked past and said sarcastically, ‘Nice coat’, and laughed. I was gutted!

This link has me crying with laughter. Thank you!

I’m sure he would because it’s nothing more than a casual remark

ironic that your trying to make this about him being a man and OP’s a woman
you’ve done exactly the same in reverse and a doubt you’d be so up in arms if a woman would of said it

Iwantanothergo · 03/08/2026 05:11

Don’t be silly.

In wearing a get-up like that you were making a deliberate choice about the impression it would make on others. If the impression wasn’t what you had hoped for you can’t complain!

Tamtim · 03/08/2026 05:17

What a prick. It’s just another example of men thinking they have a right to comment on what a woman is wearing. You should have written to the head at the time. It might be a bit late now. I can understand why you now feel uncomfortable walking past him.

The secondary school kids wouldn't know who Blade was as the film was over 25 years ago so the comment would not be for the kids benefit.

@TwatAtSchool91 the comment was quite funny. I would have laughed. If youre still hung up on this months later then I think thats the bigger problem here. Really?

BessieSurtees · 03/08/2026 05:47

I'm another one who thinks it's funny, he probably said what was in everyone else's head.

I once persuaded myself to buy an expensive trench coat that I had coveted. When I tried it on I could not unsee the Character Michelle from "Allo Allo", the shop assistant saw it too and we both burst out laughing and I did not buy the coat.

@TwatAtSchool91 if you are going to dress like Blade, at least laugh about it.

Dollymylove · 02/08/2026 22:43

Not being funny but......oh what the hell I'm actually laughing my head off 😂

So am I 😂😂I never think of things like that quick enough, and prob wouldn't say it if I did unless I was pretty sure how it would land.

Sorry to the OP though, it obvs still rankles.

CedarFlag · 03/08/2026 06:31

It is inappropriate and unprofessional. And we know he would not have said it to a man. But I wouldn’t report it. Just ignore the idiot.

Gosh, I wish I was this easily amused!

DenizenOfAisleOfShame · 03/08/2026 06:35

This is the funniest thread in a long time.

Partly because of the image of OP going about dressed like Herr Flick (props to a pp for that one) and on the school run. 😂 But also for the amazingly weird comments from the offended-in-solidarity posters.

Leave the guy alone. He’s funny. And complimentary. Wesley Snipes/Blade is cool and kick arse.
