AIBU to think SAHMs are lazy?

As a stay at home mum how often do you get this judgement online vs real life?
It seems no one really says it in real life but there seems to be so much vitriol on here that there must be a fair amount of people who think it.
Has anyone made a rude comment to you in person?
Or are you a person who think sahm’s are lazy?

AIBU to think sometimes a sahm is in a family’s best interest?

Did AI suggest this title? It's such clickbait! And also "AIBU to think...." is supposed to be followed by what you think. Which it doesn't here, and so then your your YABU/YANBU don't make any sense.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 29/07/2026 07:21

Title doesn’t match the post and voting

A sahp is the childcare provider and cleaner that working parents often need to pay for. Plus usually doing all the mental load on top.

Betadelta · 29/07/2026 07:24

It's impossible to vote because the title and the question in the last line of your post are opposite to each other.

If you’re a SAHM and you know you’re not lazy then who the fuck cares what someone online that you don’t know thinks.

Ibi · 29/07/2026 07:25

Some people are lazy, don’t think it really matters what your job is. I work, but I’m also a bit lazy, but it makes me efficient - I always look for the fastest way to do something.

Sometimes one parent staying at home is best for the family, sometimes both parents going to work is best for the family, sometimes both parents staying at home is best. Just stop caring what other people think, it has no bearing on your life.

Noshadowsinthedarkness · 29/07/2026 07:25

I don’t think it’s lazy.

I think in an ideal world it sounds lovely, but realistically it’s a massive risk being financially reliant on someone who could up and go etc.

🍿 come on now everyone, you know you shouldn't....

Betadelta · 29/07/2026 07:26

When I was a SAHM with three DC under 4 I would definitely not have described myself as lazy.

Sartre · 29/07/2026 07:27

Not lazy but I do feel sorry for them a bit. They don’t seem to have an identity outside of their home and children so all conversations revolve around that. They’re also very on top at school because that becomes a central focus on their lives I guess.

DonaldWheresMaTweezers · 29/07/2026 07:28

No, presumably they are doing the childcare that they would otherwise have to pay for if they didn't stay at home.

I'd always caution that they need to create the possibility of financial independence if it's needed, especially if they're not married and relying on a partner's income, but that's an entirely different question.

ALovelyPinkUnicorn · 29/07/2026 07:29

Gosh what an undocumented and unusual topic op!! brava for the ingenuity! 👏

RedRock41 · 29/07/2026 07:29

SAHPs are in general not lazy. Working parents have double duty though often doing many of the SAHP tasks and having to fit in 40 hours (or however many) paid hours of work, plus commute plus nursery or childcare drop offs and pick ups. That’s a lot of extra pressure imho. Working parents only experience SAHP lifestyle usually when on ‘annual leave/holiday’. I’ve done both. Working parenting imho is overall much harder but both are valuable.

JugBouquet · 29/07/2026 07:29

I don’t think they’re lazy, no. I think they’re making a deeply unwise decision, though.

Out here in the real world.....
No one cares if someone is a SAHM and most likely doesn't spend their time thinking about whether that person is lazy or not.

ViaRia01 · 29/07/2026 07:32

@JugBouquet all of them?!

IronEverything · 29/07/2026 07:38

I'm a SAHM. If a working parent had the cheek to call me lazy, I'd give them my opinion on their choices and I'm sure they wouldn't like it.

Zanatdy · 29/07/2026 07:40

I don’t think they are lazy but find it odd when still saying they are a SAHM when kids are teens. Personally it wasn’t for me, I would never want to be financially reliant on a man.

Respectfully, the only difference between their choices and yours is that they’ve chosen not to make themselves economically dependent.

I find mos people have no idea about the reality of others lives, especially strangers.
