AIBU To Point Out Opinions You Don’t See Outside Of Mumsnet …?

So I have noticed that according to (a lot of posters on) Mumsnet:

-Transphobia is perfectly acceptable.
-Ageism is the worst/most prevalent type of discrimination going on in the uk today.
-Cheating in a relationship is tantamount to murder.
-Enrolling your children in boarding school means you don’t love them.
-Teaching is always a miserable profession, with no exceptions.

What else have you noticed is a very common MN opinion but not one you hear in real life?

I’m not trying to start an argument on the truth of any of these statements, just curious what others have noticed.

Maybe the disconnect is that you can afford very posh hotels which offer baby monitors? Even then it seems an outdated thing to do.

We tend to book air b and b's so dc can have a bedroom to themselves and we can have the living room after they've gone to bed, instead of having to put them down and then just sit there in a Premier Inn or something. I would not leave them.

Why is it an outdated thing to do?

We have better technology to allow us to monitor them, so it seems odd that people would be so much more fearful than in the days of ‘occasionally the receptionist would walk past to see if they could hear crying’, when it seemed more widespread.

We occasionally stay in Airbnbs too if that’s the best option, but it’s nice staying in a hotel and not having to cook or clean, and all the facilities etc.

If you’re literally downstairs and less than a minute away if needed, and can hear/see them on a monitor, and talk to them if necessary, I don’t see the issue.

The risk actually feels a lot less than if they are sleeping in a separate room whilst you’re asleep, and potentially completely unaware of a stealthy intruder.

I feels like some people have taken the MM incident, and extrapolated and catastrophised to extremes!

You don’t see the issue and I do. It’s called a “difference of opinion”.

Who said it was late at night? Oh yes. No one

Well you said you didn’t stay in your room all evening, so presumably you were out at night?

Not LATE at night. You re obviously finding this hard to understand. All parents aren’t you. We all do things differently. I, for example, never left my children alone in a strange place. You did. You think that’s ok. I don’t. And another 20 posts justifying it won’t change my mind.

If you were that confident about it you wouldn’t feel the need to justify it.

The irony of this! 😆

If you were that confident about it you wouldn’t feel the need to justify it.

Are people trying to justify it or explain that it’s not the same as some are implying?

I agree we all do things differently.

I am confident in my decisions, the origin of the entire post was things which people are vehemently against on Mumsnet which they don’t actually seem to be in real life - hence the explaining why it’s ok to those who disagree.

It is you criticising me for doing this, not the other way round. You say you never did it - ok, we have established this is because you ended your evenings very early to accommodate your children. Not everyone likes to do that on holiday, and for my babies ‘LATE AT NIGHT’ and a possible meltdown could be after about 6pm.

That’s my thinking. I have stayed in hotel suites with bedrooms opposite each other with a lounge in between. I assume that was awful parenting too!

I don’t know why you need to tell a lie in your last sentence to justify yourself. Just own it. It’s tedious.

To an adult club? Bet you were popular.

Some people do want adult time on holiday you know

if you want adult time, pay a babysitter, take an au-pair with you, leave the children with family

or just don't have children. Dumping a baby in a hotel room because you want "me-time" is ridiculous.

You can read my edits by clicking on the button - I haven’t lied, I extrapolated on my point to make it clearer to you.

Differentforgirls · 29/07/2026 15:11

Anyway, you’ve proven you know it wasn’t the best thing to do because all these hours later you’re still justifying it.

If you thought it was great parenting you still wouldn’t be here trying to justify it by criticising other parents .

Don’t have children because sometimes you eat dinner downstairs after the baby has gone to bed and is asleep upstairs 😂

I have no issue with what other parents do, when my child has been of an age that they’ll sleep in a pram I’ve done that, when they’ve been a young baby and in a suitable environment I’ve done that.

My point was merely that why such judgement for one, and not the other from those criticising me…

I am replying because people keep commenting suggesting this is criminal behaviour and should be reported to social services which is… quite extreme and therefore interesting to discuss.

Differentforgirls · 29/07/2026 14:28

Why go on a family holiday to get “adult time”? You can do that at home.

Exactly how ?? What with work kids etc? Or are parents not allowed to do anything for themselves on holiday?

I’m not sure why this has now descended into you telling people I’m lying, I’m still not even clear what I’m supposed to be lying about.

My post edit was to say my babies would
find anything post 6pm ‘late at night’, I’m not sure how you can conclude that’s a lie, it’s not an uncommon problem.

That leaving a baby asleep in a hotel room with a baby monitor while you eat downstairs is neglectful and extremely dangerous.

Literally everyone I know does it. Hotels provide baby monitors to allow you to do it.

On here it is considered criminal.

I wouldn’t do this. I don’t know anyone who would.
